Temple Scrimmage

Is anyone going tomorrow?  Look forward to a good readout on our new additions and what we can expect this year!

I’ll leave the X’s and O’s to other posters but my one word description of this year’s team is: SIZE

As for the result, let’s just say GW fans left today’s game happy 😉

Nice. Anything or anyone stand out to you besides size?

Re: Temple Scrimmage

The game had the feel of a Kenner Leafue game.  Looks like we can rebound and score inside.  And this was without 6’11” Vukovic who was out with an ankle injury.  We did not shoot well from the 3 and turned the ball over too much.  I was impressed with Witherspoon, Arceneaux and Dylan James.  Looks like Frost will slide in easily to the Garrett Johnson role.  If you liked Aranguren last season, you should like c him again this season .   For you old timers, it was nice seeing and chatting with Brian Magid.

The worry about Jean being PG is overblown.

The freshman N’Landu looked confident. I’m sure he’ll make some freshman mistakes but he’ll be able to hold his own.

We were short on a bunch of 3s but we were able to get good shots. Nothing was really forced.

I think Dylan James is going to be very good. Not sure I would say he’ll be Castro 2.0 but I feel comfortable with him manning the paint.

Old friend Christian Jones was randomly in attendance. Wonder if Murray State is in town for a scrimmage of their own?

Thanks for this. Was score kept?  Did we win?

Re: Temple Scrimmage

Until I actually saw a “secret” scrimmage, I didn’t fully appreciate how meaningless the score was. The game was 2 20 minute periods plus one 10 minute period   score reset after each period. We won all 3 by a few points

Ahhh….I see. No idea if Temple is any good, but sounds like we were more than comply.

Re: Temple Scrimmage

I also thought N'Landu looked good and should be able to contribute this season. I was impressed by the team's length at every position.  It was also really nice to see coach larranaga in attendance.

Re: Temple Scrimmage

We appeared to be better than Temple.     I don't recall Deng Manyang (Australia) being in the game, and I doubt very much that in a scrimmage, it would be a DNP-coaches decision.   The other 2 who didn't play were Vukovic (ankle injury) and Aldan Shaw (who I believe was away at the court hearing in which he is one of the named plaintiffs seeking a 5th year of eligibility.    He is definitely on GW's current roster and presumably practicing with the team, but will probably need a court decision to actually play in a game.

Re: Temple Scrimmage

Thanks for the reports.

Temple is projected 184 by Torvik, so glad we seemed clearly better than them.  Report pretty much sounds like what I’d except, especially in a first game - trouble with turnovers, not great outside shooting, but high major talent standing out.

Both Manyang and Shaw were in attendance but didn’t play. Shaw was wearing a uniform; Manyang wasn’t dressed and sat behind the bench. Manyang is also dealing with an ankle so it wasn’t a DNP-CD.

Agree that Shaw definitely is on the roster. He had a  locker in the locker room.

Re: Temple Scrimmage

No question that we have the positional size that CC has commented on the importance of in the past.  However, I'm afraid I need to turn this around and speak to the lack of a super speedy backcourt defender.  During the scrimmage, the problem was Jordan Marsh, a USC transfer who is listed at 5'11" but who looked more like 5' 8" or 5' 9".  The guy hit 3's and drove the lane practically at will.  The A10 has historically been filled with undersized guards who we've seemingly always had trouble keeping up with (post-Shawnta). Promis may have the quickness but I would need to see more.  Terrence actually picked him up a few times and did a credible job for someone his size.  (You're simply not playing for Kelvin Sampson unless you can truly defend.)  Hoping that this doesn't prove to be a problem area for the defense which clearly looks more energetic than last year.

Re: Temple Scrimmage

Two additional observations from the scrimmage:

1) An area that I think we're really going to be improved is our ability to get to the basket, get fouled, and find open shooters.  Last year, it was truly only Jean who was consistently able to drive hard to the hole and either finish, get fouled, or find a shooter.  Trey did it on occasion but was more content to position himself behind the arc and hope to shoot a 3.  Christian would take the ball in but lacked the strength go hard.  He would often stop short of a layup and would instead circle back and take a short jump shot.  And Tre seemingly only wanted to shoot the ball from 3.

This year, it looks like Terrance, Omari, Promis, and perhaps Felix, along with Jean, possess this ability. That's a lot of options for easy buckets, getting to the line, and finding open shooters among the guards and wings.

2) This is a very subtle nuance which may not mean much but I did note that when Ryder missed his first few three point shot attempts, his defender was right on him.  Then, when Andrew entered the game as another legitimate three point threat, the defense backed off slightly so as to not open up the court completely.  That's when Ryder nailed his next few three-point shots.  Am interested in seeing if there are discernible differences in Ryder's shooting based on the teammates who are on the court with him.

Re: Temple Scrimmage

Kind of cool for the school to open this up to season ticket holders and donors. Unfortunately I missed it because I was living it up in Mexico City. Did Lipitz and CC take questions before the scrimmage?

Lipitz didn't say much other than the Georgetown scrimmage was nearly sold out.

From what I remember:

1. Someone asked who has surprised him in practice so far.  CC said Lovro and Promis.

2. We will be playing a closed scrimmage at Towson on the 21st.

3. CC was initially against taking any of the guys involved in eligibility lawsuits, like Aidan Shaw.  However, Lovro's clearance was in limbo all summer (only got approved last week) so they started looking at contingencies.  Aidan himself is not cleared so he won't be playing in any games until he is.

Re: Temple Scrimmage

I'll piggyback on GW0509's answer:

1) Lipitz spoke briefly and also promoted the Greenbrier, Boston College, and Texas road trips.
2) CC really praised Promis, indicating that he (and I'm paraphrasing) wasn't expecting that much from a freshman but that he's played his way into the rotation.
3) After CC was initially reluctant to pursue "pending lawsuit guys" (for lack of a better phrase), he sought out many opinions, and each one basically said that "of course" you should be pursuing anyone of interest in this boat.

Just goes to show that in this era, keeping a scholarship open is smart. Likely to be a regular thing moving forward.
