The Best GW Team Right This Second

I will admit to stealing this concept from The Athletic.  Who would you pick for your All-Star GW team if they had to play right now?  Sure, you may feel sentimental towards the Jarvis teams but understand that these guys are in their 40's and even 50's by now.  Maybe Shawnta can still work some magic but I have to defer to youth here.  12 players, a head coach, and 3 assistant coaches.  Here is my team.

Centers:  The no-brainer here is Kevin Larsen.  We'll need a backup and it gets a tad trickier here.  Pops and Kevin Marfo are both undersized.  Pops has the edge here even as he heads toward his late 30's.  A generation earlier came Sasha Koul, a more conventional center, but his advanced age disqualifies him.  Finally, there is Colin Smith, tall, athletic and youthful.  My heart says that Pops ought to be my backup but my head says Smith.  My head gets the nod.

Forwards:  We'l combine the 3's and 4's here since there is some interchangeability.  The no-brainers are Zeke and Tyler.  I want Jamison Battle's three point shooting on this team.  This leaves one spot for Rob Diggs, Mike Hall or Damian Hollis.  No matter what, we're getting a veteran's presence.  Hall is the oldest of the three but the guy's been lighting it up overseas for years.  Plus, someone has to will this team to victory by getting in their faces and nobody can do that better than Mike.  Welcome Mike Hall.

Shooting guards/wings:  Patricio Garino is a yes.  Any concerns about Mo Creek were cleared up at TBT.  He or Tyler are getting the ball with the game on the line.  I want one more player and my finalists are Jameer Nelson Jr.,  JR Pinnock, Maureece Rice, Jordan Roland, and Kethan Savage.  JNJ's game just isn't there yet.  JR's game was so effective when he aggressively took the ball to the hole but am not sure he can play that game in his mid-30's.  Rice did not have a great physique while he played at GW and I'm guessing it hasn't improved with age.   This leaves Jordan and Kethan and I'm giving the nod not to the person who did more for GW but the person who showcased what he could do when he left.  That would be Mr. Roland.

Point Guards:  I'm drawing the line for eligibility on this team to be anyone who has played for GW, plays for GW, or is eligible to play this upcoming season.  Good timing James Bishop.  I hope I know enough to realize that I'd like you on this team.  Tony Taylor also makes this team as our veteran point guard.  One spot remains among Carl Elliott, Joe McDonald and Armel Potter.  Since we already have one veteran point guard in Tony, I'm not willing to use a second spot on Carl.  Joe was as steady as they come and Armel's game transfers well to today's pick and roll/drive and dish or drive and score style.  Am going with Armel in a very close call.

Roster: Starting 5:  Larsen, Cavanaugh, Armwood, Garino, Taylor
Bench:  C. Smith,  Hall, Battle, Creek (or Battle Creek), Roland, Bishop, Potter

Finally the coaching staff:  With any current or former GW coach in the running, I'm going to go with an unconventional choice.  Steve Pikiell was an assistant coach on GW's first-ever A10 Championship team and helped build the following season's 27-3 squad (though he had departed prior to this season).  Since then, he took a Stony Brook program to their first-ever NCAA tournament and is helping Rutgers become more than competitive in the Big 10.  Pikiell is my head coach.  I have room for three assistants and with all due respect to Bob Tallent, John Kuester, Tom Penders and Maurice Joseph, they are not being considered).  This leaves Mike Jarvis, Karl Hobbs, Mike Lonergan and Jamion Christian for three spots.  Ouch.  I'm going to want JC for his love of analytics, Lonergan for his x's and o's, and Hobbs because he and Pikiell function best when together.  Apologies to Mike Jarvis who did his best work with a dominant center (Ewing, Dare, and Koul) of which this team lacks.

This was a fun exercise.  What changes would you make?.

Re: The Best GW Team Right This Second

Great idea, but you forgot Yuta.

For me:

PG:  Tony Taylor, Joe McDonald (cause his starters are here)
SG:  Mo Creek, JNJ, Pauli Jorgs
Wing:  Yuta, Pato, Battle, Seymour (Sight unseen)
PF:  Cavanaugh, Mike Hall (also GM & head of social media)
C:  Larsen, Marfo
Walkon:  Matt Hart (for the fire)

Agree with Pikiell as coach with ML/JC as assistants

Great catch BM; I sure did forget Yuta.  Am torn between cutting Mike Hall and Armel Potter.  I'll have Yuta replace Armel figuring that Tony and James Bishop provide enough at the point.  I'll slide Jordan in there on an as needed basis.

Now here's your dilemma...you included 13 players, not counting Matt Hart, and you only get to keep 12.  So you have one more cut to go.  And, did you mean to exclude Armwood or was this an oversight?  If an oversight, then you'll need to cut two more players.

This is a three point heavy roster so no Armwood.  Marfo went 0.333 from 3-pt range... 1-3   ;)

Last cut will be JNJ.  Potential doesn't mean much for an all-star game.

Re: The Best GW Team Right This Second

Gwmayhem, I had to think about this one for quite a while to come up with my list. Then I read the responses and changed my mind on a few because great points were made about certain players!

The only player nobody seemed to mention that was in my top 10 was JR Pinnock.  I know JR is retired, but he was a true great and I imagine he could still ball today, at least better than any other SG I considered.  With no disrespect to JNJ, perhaps I could change my mind and put him ahead of JR after this season.  Also, I have Zeke coming off the bench at either PF or C (and at C, only because I couldn't think of any other alternative).  And finally, I felt bad about leaving the great Mike Hall off the list, because he really was one of the best ever to grace the floor at the Smith Center.  But time moves on and I feel, right at this moment, TC and Zeke are the right picks in my opinion..

PG -  Joe McDonald * and Tony Taylor
SG -  Mo Creek * and Pinnock
Wing -  Garino * and Yuta
PF -  Cavanaugh * and Zeke
C -  Larsen * and Zeke

* Starter

Re: The Best GW Team Right This Second

22ndandF, you only used 9 players since Zeke is listed twice so you do get to add 3 more.  I did mention JR in my write-up.  In short, my concern is that his style of play, a physical player who excelled at taking the ball to the hole, may not translate so well at his advanced age (advanced relative to younger players on the team).  Also, what would your coaching staff be?  1 head coach and up to 3 assistants.

Gwmayhem, I would add Jameer, Battle and Jordan Roland. I always felt badly that Roland transferred.  I feel he's an excellent young man, and would have been a great leader for GW both on and off the court.

My head coach would be Mike Jarvis, with Karl Hobbs and JC as assistants.  Coach Hobbs recruited some great players and developed them into wonderful people and great representatives for GW. JC, would have been my head coach, but he just doesn't have the track record that Mike Jarvis has.  Lastly, I'd give MoJo the final assistant job because I feel he was in a no win situation and deserved to be brought along. He's obviously a very smart person and even Tom Izzo, gave him an incredible endorsement.  I feel certain that under Coach Jarvis, and with Coach Hobbs and JC by his side, MoJo would learn a lot and develop into very good coach, more than capable of coaching any D1 basketball program.
