Roster Updated

Link

Not as interesting as normal since they don't have updated measurements or a group picture to speculate on, but Lincoln Ball is listed at 6'6", an inch taller than promised and Moyer at 6'9", and inch taller than his Vanderbilt listed height.

Re: Roster Updated

Thanks for sharing BM!

Sorry guys, I don’t pay as much as attention to player news as some of y’all do. My understanding is that Ricky Lindo will be the only guy sitting out the season. Is that correct? Bishop and Dean are both cleared right?

I know Leftwitch and Moyer are cleared as Grad transfers.

Re: Roster Updated

Dean will have to sit out until Spring Semester.

Re: Roster Updated

Lindo should be sitting unless he's applied for a waiver which few are aware of.  Harris is on the roster but his health makes him a primary concern.

From a newcomer perspective, it does appear to be the year of the killer B's:  Freshmen Brown, Ball and Brelsford all arrive, along with transfer Bishop.  Looks like Jamison was a year ahead of his time.

It does seem like we've been neglecting the freshmen a bit with much of the off-season discussion focused on the transfer market.  Am curious as to whether anyone has any insight regarding these three freshmen?  While it's often difficult to project guys before they've played their first college games, and we lack the benefit of having seen guys play at Kenner, do you think that one or more of the three will be regular rotation players (i.e. say 10+ minutes/game)?  Guys like Mike Brown, Shawnta Rogers, Mo Rice, Jordan Roland, and Yuta Watanabe were each either prolific enough and/or famous enough as they entered college that their reputations preceded them.   Does anyone foresee one or more of our freshmen becoming an immediate contributor?  (Of the group I mentioned, I realize that Roland had a modest freshman season.  However, he was such a prolific player in high school that it would be hard to not have visualized him as a highly productive college player once given the opportunity.)

BM, thank you for sharing this link.  I think JC has set the table for at least the next couple of years.  Also, I read the thread previewing the A10 this season. I feel that, after we play about half of our games, we should be playing well enough to be considered one of the top 6 teams in the conference.

These may be silly questions, but, do you know (or does anyone else know) how uniform numbers are assigned to players? And, do you think GW would ever consider retiring certain numbers as tributes to past great GW players (e.g. maybe some players in the GW hall of fame)?

Re: Roster Updated

As I recall from my days as a scoreboard operator for GW games, jerseys cannot contain numbers 6 through 9.  So that means there are 31 approved numbers.  Not saying it would be a problem for GW, but that's why college numbers are much more rarely retired than in the pros.

Re: Roster Updated

is there a reason for 6-9 being forbidden?

Re: Roster Updated

I went and looked- stolen from somewhere:
"The uniform policy — adhered to by the N.C.A.A. and the National Federation of State High School Associations (the national governing body for high school athletics) — is said to be intended to simplify the hand signaling made by officials."When a player is whistled for a foul, the referee signals to the scorer’s table the uniform number of the offender by using his hands. John Adams, the N.C.A.A.’s men’s basketball officiating coordinator, said the system is set up so that referees flash only two hands to make their signals, making things easier for the scorer to interpret."

I don't know - football seems to manage.

Re: Roster Updated

Of course, you could honor players by having their jerseys hang from the rafters without retiring the number.  Lots of schools do this.
