Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

JC should think about trying to play man. Why is he so set on playing zone all the time!?

Yeah the bigs seem especially lost on the zone. Don’t seem to know where to go when the ball moves and aren’t moving well defensively. Seem like a tram that doesn’t play zone.

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

this is definitely more zone than we saw all of last year. word was that you'll never see a JC team play zone. Curious why he's breaking it out now.

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

No rebounding, porous zone, dozens of turnovers, not forcing enough turnovers, jacking 3s, pretty horrible. Zone may be intended to blunt our lack of height, but it's not really doing that while also giving up easy looks.

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

Feels like defense is terrible, turnovers are terrible and they shouldn't be in the game at all... And then you look at the box and if they were just 75% from the line rather than 60% this would be a 1 possession ballgame with 2 minutes left

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

Was wondering the same thing about Maceo.

Yikes, bishop...

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

Down 7 with about a minute left and we get a step-back 3 from JNJ and a one-on-one James Harden-esque move from Bishop to force a shot. Awful

hope bishop gets an earful after this

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

Forced 2 TOs late we converted to 2 forced 1-on-5 shots on offense (Nelson, Bishop). Terrible shot selection down the stretch.

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

Mentz...we don't lack height.  Brelsford at 6'4", Nelson at 6'1" and Bishop at 6'2" are our only players under 6'5".  We play a zone because our players cannot defend.

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

Lot of talent, going to take awhile for the talent to gel.  The reason we were picked near the bottom of the A10 is just that, new components.

May surprise some folks and the talent glues together soon than expected.  Hardly a surprise that with a limited off-season during a global pandemic, the product in game 1 was choppy, and kudos to Navy for shooting so well

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

Beyond happy to see them back out on the court, but man was this a disappointing effort all around. Bishop is a ball hog. Went iso way too much. Navy picked the zone to pieces. I get JC likes to have the team work things out on the court but use a TO every now and then. Sometimes you need to tide the other team's momentum. One last parting thought... make a free throw.

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

JCs insistence of sticking with zone was killer.

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

Well, put that one in the "bad performance all around" file. Aside from wearing clean uniforms and showing up on the Chesapeake on time, what did GW do well? Coaching decisions in the last 90 seconds may have been what put me over the edge (how can you cut it to a five-point deficit and eat all three time outs? Why was JNJr on the court to commit a foul when he was the one player in foul trouble?).
What you see is what you get.
Now I need to go restock my liquor cabinet before getting locked down all weekend, something I was hoping this game would not necessitate.

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

Besides allowing the dunk and the open 3, we left the high post unguarded nearly every position.  Hitting a 14 footer when unguarded is not that difficult for a college player.

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

Final score was way closer than the actual game was. 2 awful possessions down the stretch to cut the lead to 1 possession and we throw them away. Some of those TOs were unacceptable and the missed FTs were atrocious (missed 9 lost by 7).

Some other notes:
- Why did we play in a zone for the entire game when it was clear that it wasn't working and our bigs couldn't find defend the mid-range or rotate fast enough to cover the dunks?
- Where was Maceo Jack during that game? Seems like he barely got on the floor during the 2nd half which was very surprising for me
- There's a clear lack of defensive talent inside the paint. I know Paar has some offensive capabilities in the paint, but they were non-existent for this entire game. He was invisible for a large majority of the game
- Outside of Battle (and Bishop to some extent) our 3 point shooting this afternoon was very disappointing.
- Can't rely on JNJ, Bishop, and Battle to put up nearly 60 ppg. Need to find scoring somewhere else
- On a positive note, Battle and JNJ looked very good offensively. Nice to see them making things happen. Battle looked a little quicker which was a concern last year
- 10 rebounds for Moyer was nice, but doesn't seem to bring much to the table offensively

Overall, the talent is there. Just need to gel defensively and find an interior scoring option.

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

From a tiny sample of size of two--this game and the scrimmage-Bishop does not look like a point guard who can make teammates on offense better.  Don't think he sees the floor well and when he does see something other than his own drive/shot, it's a click late.  The defense was a mystery after seeing no zone last year and the zone being viewed as far inferior to man-to-man.  Navy coach now on TV saying how they didn't expect to see the zone and they do well against the zone, were unselfish, and they made shots!  So let's add that we were outcoached today; Mojo would not have received much grace from any of us today.

Re: GW vs Navy Game Thread

Navy led this game from start to finish!! The play of Jamison Battle was one of the few bright spots today, everything else like shooting, defense, offensive sets was bad. There is a chance that Navy could be very good this year, so this loss may not look that bad down the line, the announcers seemed to indicate that there were high expectations for Navy
