Not to get in the middle of this but there is a third explanation - execution. I think our ATO plays have had mixed results this year but I have noticed some really good design. Sometimes, it's not the coaching fellas. Players still have to make plays. Sometimes the best design is laid waste by poor execution. So as CC would probably tell you, there are times when they could have gone to something else, there are times when they nailed it (design) and it was executed, there are times when they nailed it (design) but it was poorly executed, and there are times when the defense just made a good play.

DC Native, your points are well taken. There have clearly been some late game malfunctions which may have been the result of poor play designs, poor execution, or both. Many of these in fact have taken place not out of timeouts but in situations where CC has let his team play (and not let the opponent talk about what they'd like to do on D). Several of these have sparked debates on whether CC should have called a timeout to set up a play.

I guess I took exception to your referring to CC as the worst in the country at this (I get it, it was posted in real time) which made me SMH as we are so much better today at running plays out of timeouts than we were under MoJo or JC. I remember on one of Jamion's coach's shows when they went inside the locker room and JC discussed that he had something like 50 plays in his playbook which in turn had something like 500 variations, and I recall thinking "great. Now if you'd only just call one of them..."

I agree the ATO and End of Game/Half problems can make a person crazy. Same with lost leads. Is there a league rule that GW has to run a 1-4 at the end of halfs? Drives me nuts. If they don’t have a guard that is comfortable in those situations, than MOVE! Move the ball! Move your feet.
