I'll revert back to a CC interview when he first arrived at GW. CC mentioned that he would love to play a very deep bench, I'll take this to mean 10-11 players regularly, as long as he had the necessary depth to do so. So, each year, I've wondered whether this would be the year we see this, but it hasn't happened quite this way yet. To be fair, you almost must remain healthy in order to have a chance at doing this.
I think the key here is that there cannot be a major talent dropoff between players 1-5 and players 6-8. And similarly, players 9-11 must be pretty close to players 6-8 in order for a coach to have the courage to try this. The benefits of course amount to maintaining fresh legs which in turn enables teams to play defensive aggressively (lots of forced turnovers, foul trouble becomes less of an issue) and at a fast pace on offense. To be fair, we've seen traces of this but not quite the full throttle version. When you see that those top 3 or 4 players are so good that they must average a minimum of 28-30 minutes per game, then this flies in the face of playing 10 or 11 guys for anything other than token stretches.
Needless to say, it is way too early to speculate on whether this is the roster that convinces CC to trust and utilize his extended bench more than ever before. Nevertheless, this is something that I've consistently paid attention to, and worth keeping an eye on over the upcoming months.
