A10 teams went 5 - 3 on opening Monday, although 2 preseason contenders lost to tough foes. On Tuesday the A-10 swept 4 games. Tonight St Bonaventure played host Niagara (preseason MAAC favorite) tough for a half, but lost 75 - 51. Bonnies only have a roster of 10. Dayton is getting doubled up by UConn.
On Monday, Richmond got thumped by Duke 83 - 53. Addie Budnick led the Spiders with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Host Princeton rallied from 3 down after the 3rd period to beat Duquense 65 - 57. Megan McConnell only had 5 points to go with 12 rebounds. Amaya Hamilton (18 pmts, 5 - 5 3s) and Ayanna Thompson combined for 31 points on 12 - 18 shooting. Loyola fell to UIC 67 - 51, trailing 21 - 3 after the first period.
Besides GW over Howard, George Mason bet Bowie State 96 - 45 and Fordham beat Adelphi 70 - 43 led by 18 points from Emy Hayford (Pittsburgh.). Adelphi is a D2 team from the Northeast 10. Fordham is counting the game as a win; Adelphi as an exhibition. This happened last season when Dayton, desperate for a non conference win, scheduled a lower tier team which counted their loss as an exhibition.
UMass beat St Peter's 55 - 44. Minutewomen have a roster of 13 (3 returnees, 6 transfers, 4 first years) but only 8 dressed, just like their exhibition win over Assumption (also Northeast 10.). Don't know the status of the injured but UMass really needs a bit more depth and height. Stefanie Kulesza had her career high in points and first career double double, 15/14. Kristin Williams had a career high of 17. The other holdover, Lilly Ferguson, scored her first college points, with 6. Tori Huduke (GW/Drexel) started at point guard, and is a co-captain. She was only 1 - 5 from the field, making her first 3 pointer. It was a brutal game with 43 turnovers, 23 by the Peacocks. Hyduke was the only player without a turnover, except for Peacocks who played the last minute. Bre Bellamy (6') it the other co-captain,as the other graduate student, and started at center. A late recruit, Lilly Taulelei 6'3", (New Zealand) looked promising with a 6/3 night in only 9 minutes as she had 4 fouls. St Peters was 0 - 30 last year.
LaSalle beat host Coppin State 73 - 68, despite 32 turnovers. Explorers had to rally to win but shot 28 - 55 while Coppin State shot 26 - 79, which I guess it how you lose to a team with 32 turnovers.
On Tuesday, URI beat Sacred Heart 91 - 40, behind 20 points from Maye Toure and 17 from Tanin Megasaa, 6 rebounds each. VCU beat Hofsstra 72 - 44. Davidson defeated USC Upstate 86 - 51, with 5 Wildcats in double figures, 17 by Charlese Dunn, a sophomore and one of several Australians on the team.. St Joe's beat Rider led by 22 from Tayla Brugler (10 - 11 from the field) and 19/16 from Laura Ziegler, picking up where they left off last season.
So a 9 - 5 start, with no unexpected losses, and no statement wins. St Louis opens their season tomorrow.

Thursday games: George Mason beat Marshall (0-1) 84 - 77. Patriots were L\led by 20 points from Ta'Viyann Habib, a transfer from Indian River State College. In the other A10 win, Loyola of Chicago beat woeful Chicago State 84 - 77 for the Ramblers first win. Chicago State was 6 - 22 last year with 4 of the wins over more woeful, and leaving D1, Hartford.
Defending tournament champion St Louis had an unimpressive performance inter opener, a home loss to Drake (2-0)) although Drake is usually a good team. Drake 78, St Louis 66. Kyla McMakin had 20 points for the Billikens but only 6 - 18 from the field. LaSalle also dropped their home opener 58 - 48 to Maine (1-1.). The only Explorer in double figures was Freshman Anya Mackton (5"10", Catonsville.). She had 13 points. LaSalle did reduce their turnovers to 17, from 32 at Coppin State. Maine has an A10-centric non conference schedule, hosting UMass and URI in their next 2 games, followed by Richmond to start a 3 game Des Moines tournament. And finally Fordham on December 2.
In a game between 2 first time head coaches, host Northeastern (2-0) held off UMass 78-74 . UMass again only dressed 8 players, and 2 fouled out late. Northeastern returned several players who have experience playing with each other. Lacking much inside presence, UMass gave up several lay-ups. MInutewoman hurt themselves by missing 10 free throws, including 8 in the fourth quarter when they were trying to come back by 13 points down.
Bre Bellamy (William and Mary) had 15 points and 8 rebounds. And fouled out. Kristen Williams scored 13. Jermany Mapp (Hampton) had 11 points on 5 - 9 shooting after going 0 - 9 in their opener. Stefanie Kulesza had 8 points to go with 11 rebounds. Tori Hyduke had 12 points on 2 - 9 from the field and 7 - 8 from the line. She started and played 34 minutes after only about 23 in the opener. She has 4 assists to only one turnover. In the age of transfers, UMass started 3 former CAA players (Bellamy, Mapp, Hyduke) against a CAA team.

3 conference teams won tonight, while there was a surprise in the north woods.
Duquense (2-1) 65, Howard (H, 1-3) 51 Naelie Bernard had 18 points for the Dukes. Megan McConnell scored 10 points with 7 rebounds and 6 assists.
VCU (H,3-0) 55, East Carolina 50
St Joseph's (3-0), 77, Penn (1-1) 49. Game was at the Palestra but I believe it was considered a home game for Penn. Luara Ziegler had 18 points and 14 rebounds. Chloe Welch scored 13. Welch is a graduate student from Davidson. Freshman Gabby Casey had 16 off the bench. Talya Brugler and Mackenzie Smith each had 10.
Maine (H, 3-1), 59, URI (2-1) 49. Black Bears' 3rd straight win over an A10 team. They were picked 2nd in preseason America East poll. Maye Toure had 15 points and 9 rebounds for URI. Rams shot 20-70 from the field, including 1 -22 from beyond the arc. Announcers said it can be difficult to shot in The Pit, with its tight conditions. End zone walls are about 10 feet from the end line and there's a wall behind the team benches. Commentator said URI looked tied in the 4th period, which they did.
Maine was led by 5th year Anne Simon (Luxembourg) with 25 pints after dropping 27 on UMass and 20 at LaSalle. Junior Adrianna Smith (Reston/Bishop O'Connell) was 14/10.)
And to close the book on St Peters, 0 - 30 last year and an opening loss in at UMass. Peacocks beat Central Connecticut 61 - 57 on Monday at home.

A10 teams went 4 - 1 on Wednesday with another Power conference win.
GW (H, 3-0) 67, American (1-2) 59. GW is one of 4 undefeated A 10 teams.
Richmond (2-1) 80, Gardner-Webb (H,0-3) 53. Maggie Doogan had a 25/10 afternoon. Grace Townsend scored 18, Laren VanArsdale (a third Hampton transfer in the A10) had 12. GW and UMass also have players from Hampton.
George Mason (H,4-0) 60, Pittsburgh (1-2) 52. Sonia Smith led the Patriots with 15 points. Mason drew 1,181, which I believe is a pretty good crowd for them. Tory Verdi left UMass for the ACC but didn't bring any players with him. However freshman Aaryn Battle requested a release from her letter of commitment to UMass. She didn't play much for Pitt the first 2 games but scored 10 points on 5 - 9 shooting tonight, off the bench.
Drexel (H,2-1) 71, LaSalle (2-2) 46. High scorer for the losing Explorers was freshman Nicole Melious with 10.
St Louis (H,2-1) 79, Missouri State (1-1) 67. Billikens won the 4th quarter by 33 - 16. Peyton Kennedy scored 24, while Julie Martinez had 21 points to go with 7 rebounds and 6 assists. St Louis had been 3 - 14 against Missouri State.

Davidson women knocked off Duke in Durham last night.
Posted by WMC 11/17/2023 8:24 pm | #10 |
A10 teams were 2 - 4 Thursday night, not surprising since 5 of the bottom 6 teams played. The 6th being LaSalle. And as Minsk noted above, Davidson beat Duke at Cameron. Blue Devils were ranked 22 in one poll and receiving votes in the other.
Davidson (3-1) 69, Duke (3-1) 62. Elle Sutphin scored 19 while Suzi-Rose Deegan had 18, And Charlese Dunn, off the bench, had 15. Wildcats have 2 wins over ACC opponents and its only loss is to ranked UNC. Can they get some love from the pollsters? They probably weren't on anybody's radar. First win ever over a ranked opponent.
Loyola (2-2) 67 , Bradley (H,1-2). 62 , OT. Sam Galanopoulous had 27 points including 8 -8 free throws in the OT. Sitori Tanin had 21 and the only Loyola field goal in overtime, The other 3 Rambler starters were 0 - 14 from the field but 8 - 10 from the line.
Manhatten (2-0) 58, Fordham (H, 2-2) 44.
Ohio (H, 1-1) 67, Dayton (-1-2) 61
Albany, NY (3-1) 67, St Bonaventure (1-2) 56
Harvard (3-1) 78, UMass (H, 1 - 3) 56. Minutewomen struggled early to score, down 12 - 2, and 28 - 8 after 1st period. UMass pulled to within 8 in the 3rd period and was down 10 at the start of the 4th. Kristen Williams scored 16, and Stefanie Kulesza had another double double, 13/10. Lola Mullaney had 23 for Harvard, including several late 3 pointers. Harmoni Turner scored 22. Tori Hyduke was 0 - 9 from the field, and is 3 - 25 on the season. She was 4 - 4 from the line and is 11 - 12 for the year.

Rhode Island (3-1) 67, Brown (H, 2-3) 56. In the only Firday game, Rams rebounded from loss at Maine by shooting 49% from the field to beat a competitive Brown team that has beaten 2 Big East foes, Georgetown and Providence. Brown's next game is at Loyola Chicago.
Maye Toure had 22 points for the Rams, shooting 10 - 13 from the field. Sophie Phillips added 14. Tenin Magassa added 8 points o her 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. Freshman Sophie Vital had 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals, displaying more backcourt depth for the Rams.

A10 teams went 5 - 3 on Saturday with another win over an ACC foe
Duquense (H, 3-1) 56, Pittsburgh (1-3) 55. Dukes were down 4 after 3 quarters and then up by as many as 8. They needed 3 - 4 free throws in last 10 seconds to survive a last second 3 pointer by Pitt. Home opener drew 2,555 for City Game. Duquense is 18 - 23 against Pitt. Megan McConnell had 20 points, including 5 - 8 from the field (4 - 6 from beyond the arc) as well as 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Naelle Bernard was next with 11 points. Oddly starters and regular double figure scorers Amaya Hamilton and Ayanna Townsend had zero field goals with 5 combined free throws. Pitt and Tory Verdi was 0 -2 against his old A10 friends.
Davidson (4-1) 62, Morgan State (H, 2-2) 48. Issy Morgan led with 17 points while Mollie Prior was 14/8. Elle Sutphin and Charlese Dunn were next with 8 apiece. Laila Fair transferred to Morgan State after making All Rookie team at St Joe's and then having injury issues and lack of playing time at UMass. She is apparently deep on the bench at Morgan State, or injured, or both. She has played less than a minute, although she had a block,.
George Mason (H, 5-0) 83, Robert Morris (1-3) 63. Sonia Smith, 12 points, and Kennedy Harris, 13 points (off the bench, for reigning Rookie of the Week) led a balanced scoring attack.

Who needs to score 22 points in back-back games when you can dish out 7 assists with 0 turnovers? Yeah right! Who needs that?
