In Friday's Midwest rivalry game, host St Louis held off a late charge by Dayton for the win. Dayton, 1- 4, is tied with Fordham for 13th in conference play and hosts GW next Wednesday. St Louis, 2 - 3, is 10th and next travels to George Mason and then GW on January 20.
The St Louis solo announcer was very good. He identified players and reported significant statistics, and stayed in the flow of the game, and never got hysterical. I wonder if St Bonaventure's home announcers are still those same two guys, who misidentified a GW player the entire game.
St Louis 74, Dayton 70. All five starters scored in double figures for the Billikens, led by Kyla McMakin with 17 points (7-15 FG, no three point attempts), 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Ivy Wolf led Dayton with 16 points and Destiny Bohannon scored 14 including 4 three pointers. Arianna Smith had 12 points and 13 rebounds, her 8th double double . Riley Rismiller (FR) came off the bench for a 3 pointer to pull Dayton within 2 in the last minutes.

All 3 home teams won on Saturday. The third 1 win team, St Bonaventure, is at 2-8 Dayton tomorrow, on CBSSN.
Fordham (H, 2-7) 60, GW (1-7) 55. I thought the offensive foul/moving screen call against GW in the last minute was bogus.
St Joseph's (H,8-1) 68, Davidson (4-5) 42
URI. (H, 6-3), 63, UMass (1-8) 48. Maye Toure was 15/8 for the. Rams. Sophie Phillips broke out of a 3 game scoring slump (5.7 ppg) with 13 points. Dee Dee Davis had 9 points and 5 turnovers. Anaelle Dutat had 7 rebounds. Toure and Tenin Megassa each had 2 blocks. Stefanie Kulesza scored 15 for UMass. Alexsia Rose had 11.
UMass played better than expected and hung close after falling behind 8-0. Rams won rebound margin 36 - 26. UMass was 3 - 4 FT while URI was 6-10. Reese always uses a lot of players and 5 reserves played between 7 - 18 minutes.
Rhode Island won the 3rd period 15 -7, still rough but better than usual for UMass which has difficulty after the half time brad. But the game was won in the stretch of a few minutes when UMass was unable to handle Rhode Island's press and had numerous turnovers. In the first half, UMass did well against the Rams's press. In the 3rd period, they fell apart as the Rams moved their press nearer to the end line, and double teamed the player with the ball.. Four Minutewomen had 4 turnovers, including Tori Hyduke (2 pts - 1-2 FG, 2 assists, 2 steals.). Team finished with 23 TOs. Although Rose had 11 points, it was on 5 - 14 FG. I cringe when she shoots because she throws up a lot of air balls, or just grazes the rim. Leading scorer Kristen Williams left the game in the first period with an ankle injury. She did return to action but only played 10 minutes - just 3 points. She was limping after the game. They have a winnable game hosting LaSalle on Wednesday.
My sour grapes is that Toure and Migassa were all over UMass FR bigs, pushing and leaning on them a lot with no calls. Maybe it will be different for GW with experienced front court players. I am a believer that rookies often do not get calls in both the college and pro games. Time to watch the UConn game.

More on the Rhode Island press that caused 9 UMass turnovers in the 3rd quarter. on Saturday. Rams upped the pressure from the first half by putting 4 defenders in the back court and double teaming the Minutewoman who received the throw in. UMass was unable to throw over the top to the front court to beat the press.

The two 1 loss teams in action on Wednesday won. The other, Richmond 8-1, was the DNP. VCU jumped back in to the top four by half a game. The three 1 loss teams all lost.
URI (7-3) 61, GW (H, 1-8) 52
VCU (H, 7-2) 64, Duquiense (7-3) 51. Sarah Te-Bisau scored 26 for the Rams while Mikel Parham had 8 rebounds. Amaya Hamilton had 14 for the Dukes and Megan McConnell had 10 rebounds.
Davidson (5-5) 65, St Bonaventure (H, 1-9) 57. Charlese Dunn scored 22 for the Wildcats. Dani Haskell had 21 for the Bonnies.
St Joseph's (h, 8-1), Loyola Chicago (5-5) 50. Mackenzie Smith led the Hawks with 15, followed by Talya Brugler with 14, Aleah Snead (FR) with 13 in a starting role and Chloe Welch with 11. Alyssa Fisher scored 19 for the Ramblers.
St Louis (4-5) 87, Dayton (H, 3-7) 61. Kyla McMakin scored 26 for the victors. Reserve Eve Fiala had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Flyers.
George Mason (H, 8-1). 54, Fordham (2-8) 47. Sonia Smith led the Patriots with 15 points. Taylor Donaldson scored 24 for the Rams. Emy Hayford was next with just 6.
LaSalle (4-5) 63, UMass (H, 1-9) 52. Another fourth quarter meltdown for the Minutewomen. Attendance was over 3,000 on Field Trip day. Jolene Armendaiz had a season high 16 for the Explorers with two three-pointers and the first 8 points for the visitors. Makayla Miller had 16 including the 2 FTs with 3 seconds left. Alexsia Rose had 18 points. for UMass in probably her best game. Kristen Williams, showing no effect from her ankle injury, scored 15, with 5-14 FGs.
UMass lead by 6, 12 and 9 (47 - 38) after the first 3 periods breaks. LaSalle scored the first 12 points of the 4th quarter before 2 UMass FTs. Tori Hyduke hit a jumper to give UMass its last lead at 52 - 51. Hyduke had 7 points, 5 turnovers and fouled out, as did Stefanie Kulesza. Williams had the last ten UMass points, all in the final 1:49 - a jumper and a lay-up, followed b a long three at the 15 second mark. After LaSalle made a breakaway lay-up, Williams hit another long three with 4 seconds left, for a 61- 61 tie. After a time out, LaSalle was bailed out on a lousy throw along the sideline by a tacky tac foul on Kulesza. Unfortunately Miller caught the pass and fell out of bounds, so the ref was going to have to call a foul or a turnover. It was hard to see any contact in the replay.
Credit to LaSalle for continuing to play hard and keep their poise, at least often enough to score 25 fourth quarter points. And they out rebounded the Minutewomen.

URI's Tammi Reiss was named as Assistant Coach for the 2024 USA National Team USA 3x/3 team. Jennifer Rizzotti is the Head Coach. Rizzotti was the Head Coach for 3 different gold medal winning 3x3 teams last year. Reiss was head coach of 2 other 3x3 teams. Reiss worked at the training camp last summer and one of the 20 players in the try-out group was UMass' Sam Breen. Breen is apparently tearing up the Finnish professional league this season.
