GW 🏛️ Georgetown

The Monumental Matchup is back at Smith Center October 16.

Great to see this looks like it will be an annual matchup

Surprising Gtown didn't insist on it being a home game for them every other year?
Odds this evolves into a regular season game?

Really good crowd last year this year should be even better.

I would think that, like last year, GW is paying Georgetown for the privilege of hosting.

This game would automatically draw fewer fans if it were played at McDonough and would in all likelihood draw fewer fans if it were played at Capital One.  On a scale of 1-10, GW fans score about a 9 when it comes to caring about this while Georgetown fans score somewhere between a 2 and a 3.

Not the slightest bit surprised that this exhibition game returns to Smitty.

That's quite common sentence though right?

Essentially a partial split of the revenue generated, granted in this case with almost no travel cost

Very glad to see this game happening what appears annually ....also quite surprised that it seems to be in our building each year. Pleasantly surprised

I think it's pretty lame this is once again an exhibition game. It was fine for the first meeting in 40 years and one that we hosted, but having it, once again, be an exhibition game just smacks of little brother BS.

What would it actually take to have this be a game that really mattered?

Rental costs of Capital One make Smith Center a better destination for both teams.
Seems to have been a "big" ticket cost increase over last season

We can play at ESA. I know that means 90% of Gtown's fanbase would be afraid to travel to that part of town, but it would be a true neutral site at 1/4 the cost.

Wish we can kidnap their drum and hold it for ransom. But I guess those small school traditions are long gone. Use to be two small local private schools (undergrad) playing pickup games. College sports are now insane. Vanderbilt players are now allowed to have sponsor patches on their uniforms. This one is for a concrete company. Nascar uniforms anyone?

I just don't understand why we give Georgetown the currency (demanding a regular season game) it no longer deserves.

A plausible question to ask is whether GW's largest home crowd of the season will take place during an October exhibition for the second season in a row?  And, whether any other D1 program could make this statement?

Given the GW home schedule and the fact that Georgetown will sell as many tickets as GW, I don't think this is even a question. Probably not another D1 program that can make that statement.

No one loses by playing this game, though a midseason showdown last year would have been more fun to watch than seeing one team well-oiled by summer play going against a team getting its first workout.
Just beat those f#&%ers from That School Down the Street and I will have nothing to complain about.

Here's a better question:  Odds on how many more times you will ask this question?

Teams were notably similar in 2026

Out of 365 KenPom Teams:

GW 86
Georgetown 74
