Don't yet want to be a cord cutter, though who knew we would have 300 channels--and often nothing
to watch?
ESPN+ is worth the cost only in sports seasons we want to watch. At whatever hiked up rate it is, it's still
worth it for now. They've gotten us used to watching most GW games, no matter where they are.
That access was unthinkable at times when you were lucky to find a sports bar where you can see us (consigned to a far corner from the main TV and after 20 calls, often giving the wrong information by the bar/restaurants receptionist and staff who often knew little about sports and nothing about GW.
So if you're willing to part with $150 a year or whatever it is (and take a chance on a sloppy or disappearing feed at times, along with some announcers who are bigtime homers and may still be in college), we've been sucked into this system. And happily, in a way.
But as GWmayhem points out that if you do have cable, there's no way you want to pay $30 or $40 a
a month.
Of course, they could raise their cable rates a little bit and go the HBO Max model where it is free to HBO cable subscribers. But that would be too much sense and decent for the non-cord cutters.

Excellent finds, posters.
Hope Pato has a chance to advise/mentor Jean.
And the same for Tyler, Arnaldo and Ricky with Bubu.
Even as potential opponents, they all share a GW bond.
Someone should see that they connect.

This is obviously, as advertised, a hypothetical placeholder to keep us awake preseason.
Nonetheless, anything is plausible. We've learned that with geographically bizarre league hopping, the the transfer revolution and NIL, all within recent years.
I think we tend to support the name on the jersey, at the least the GW part, though the old team name
was fine. But now the players are in effect, professional. So far, because of the level we're at, and CC'S
values, we still have players who appear to be legitimate students, as opposed to some other teams.
Personally, would be thrilled in a world with no scholarships and whoever happened to be in school
played for GW. But the Patriot League is most likely far from pure. Even top high school teams aren't based
on who's coming to the school normally.
It's human nature to find a workaround. But to be honest, the players are now pros, with what seems like
less of a guaranteed roster than the NBA.
As pointed out by several posters above, we have undergone close to a decade of abysmal or at least
underperforming play and even the big turnaround last year was still .500 in team play. Now things look
good, but we'll see when the ball is thrown up in league play or against equivalent or higher-rated opponents.
CC may be leading us there--and kudos to him for his efforts, along with AD Lipitz, etc.
But in the end, it is us, the fans who have suffered a variety of GW Basketball indignities-- and still stayed with the team. And especially those running these boards, past and present, during the long time in the
college basketball wilderness.
While we appreciate the coaching staff, administration and players, many are generally pretty well paid. We're not--and we're still here.
So, while I wouldn't encourage any more avoidable craziness that GW can control, it would likely take
a real lot for the hardcore here to lose our loyalty to the Buff and Blue.

Utilizing Garrett's shooting, assuming it returns to form, while allowing him to gradually
get back into things, is the right approach.
Looks like we have the depth to do so this year.
The problem with the JB years, while certainly appreciating his loyalty and efforts at the end to be more of a of a team player, is that we were too centered around him. We were somewhat that way with Jun, with some good results. But when he was injured, Castro emerged.
Now it at least looks like we have plenty of options, including ones with successful D1 experience.
We'll see how it works on the court, but if that remains the case, this kind of depth would be a luxury that has been missing for a long time.

Mike K's idea is always a good one, especially given the experience level of assistants.
An experienced major level hand, unless forgetting someone, might have helped the two previous head
coaches.
CC is a good person with the right experience for the job and has us seemingly on the cusp of
really turning things around. Really like him.
Prob a good goal to evaluate him is a good OOC this season, which it should be outside of Florida, plus a good winning conference record.
Or beating Georget*wn, which should earn an immediate lifetime contract extension.
The bigger question is how well the vast majority of non P-5 NCAA and A-10 coaches can do with the new professional player environment overlaid on college basketball?

Amazing, even if only an exhibition.
And at the Smith Center.
We waited so long for this.
FQ is right: And shout out to the late Mr. Plotkin.
The question is: if we win this and lose every other game, would we still be happy?
A harder question than you think for some of us.

Well, OOC schedule is improved. Kudos to staff for that.
And while it might be raising a bit too high,
the moxie to play the NCAA champ.
Don't know about playing one of those conference teams twice. But that's presumably not our choice
and could be a real boost if we win.

As I read it, not everyone (even on the same football team) will/has to get paid. Will be interesting to see if this dilutes the “reserve” talent but also increases the number of portal transfers and creates a type of “farm club” system where players move up to higher paying schools after 1-2 years. Lower tier schools can become “feeder” schools for select high majors.

Would not be great for the academic side but this has never been about actual academics.

Seems to be happening already.
Isn't this the way it is now?
And the idea of developing High School students as a priority roster filling item is already a thing of the past. As is the idea of staying at a school because you like being there and fit in on and off the court.
In big and increasingly medium programs, academics are an afterthought at best compared to NIL/Salaries (outside of our admissions office).
Not that they have academics have ever loomed large in major athletic programs at what are technically universities.

GW commit Gapare (even if it was over admittance) and former player Freeman are emblematic of the transfer/NIL situation in college basketball.

Very good point by Poog above.
We are hoping/dreaming about one of the majors that AU is playing.
Really challenging type of schedule we haven't sniffed for what seems anyway like
a long time.

As bizarre and crazy as all of this is for "college" athletic--including nonsensical conference geography, pretending many players from the big programs are students--perhaps DC Native is right.
Would actually say those teams are professional (players making $1 million plus).
Notwithstanding our own perennial impulse to shoot ourselves in the foot with scheduling, it seems like it can't get any worse for us and our A-10 brethren in terms of the way this new era is shaking out.

Stats are horrifying. But remember he was occasionally helpful in a couple of games, including after looking
it up, a key 3-pointer in the Franklin National Bank Classic (former BB&T, etc).
Obviously we had high hopes for him. Became an NBA Assistant, so coaching may have been
more his strong suit.
And Hazzard and Darrin Greene would have transferred years earlier, as Martiniboy pointed out.
He and Greene, who was perpetually deep in Jarvis' doghouse, criticized Jarvis in the Hatchet.
A decade ago, that could have been the anonymous basis of destroying a GW coaching career.

The biggest problem with Murray St and McNeeae St being opponents in the MTE, is that we really need quad 1 opportunities on neutral courts (or home, but that’s unlikely).

Last year, McNeese would have been Quad 2 and Murray St Quad 3. With McNeese expected to take a step back, there’s a good chance these are both Quad 3 games - so lots of risk, little upside.

Obviously we need to play the best teams we can, so if this was the best MTE we could get, so be it. But it’s not exciting and FloHoops doesn’t help.

If we say we can't schedule power conference opponents as a given (not easy, but haven't other
A-10 teams done so), then the tournament is our best shot, as pointed out by FQ above.
So why are we forfeiting that opportunity? Go over the tournaments other A-10 teams are in, and most other A-10 teams are playing power conference teams/good mid-majors. At some point, we can post the list here.
The super-patsy strategy may have been Ok for the Crown, so Boise State could have its own patsy (FYI,it's not their football team) and kick our butts, but doesn't help for the NIT.
If we are going to forfeit our slim but possible (A-10 can return to multi-bid in spite of selection committee)
chance of getting to the NCAA tournament as an at-large, we should at least aim for the NIT.
And stop putting lipstick on what at least so far is our annual OOC pig.

Perhaps Noel Brown if he hasn't been mentioned.
Not so much about expectations of disappointment. More like blossoming after GW. Guess could
be another thread.
Noel was the opposite of Max Edwards at Duquesne last year, playing for the Bonnies.
Classic slower to develop big man--who showed signs of growth.
But we rode what seemed to be the hot hand of Hunter Dean. Then Dean left for a small role at home state LSU.

Well said above.
Playing in any tournament televised by FloSports is often (perhaps not always) an indicator that we have been unable to schedule better. Sometimes than a middle school cafeteria/all purpose room/
gymnasium.
(Inevitable aggressive defensive response coming).
