Re: 2025 Portal Info

Even though I've been a little on edge that we haven't signed anyone yet, Castro & Hansen didn't commit until 4/16 and 4/17 respectively. I hope we can see some roster moves soon just to give some clarity on what situation we're walking into next season.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Good luck to Darren, a fine person and player.
He averaged nearly 11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists in 28.5 minutes this year,
even injury plagued.
Whether we can get anyone of that size, with those stats at our level or better is
an open question.
We'll see if the grass is greener for us as well.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Good luck to him. I hope he succeeds. That said, he’d have been better off going to the CAA or the NEC where the ISO dribble back-up in the lane move resulting in a bad or blocked shot would have been more likely to be modestly successful.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Rutgers was definitely one of the better fits on Jun's interest list (and I'm interested to see how he fares with Pike and TJ), but I agree that he will need to improve his finishing above bigger defenders in his transition to the Big 10. One thing that would help him is better shooting to open up driving lanes to get downhill, however Pike's teams have always been pretty lousy at shooting the three ball so that's a slight concern. Rutgers was only slightly better than GW in that department this year.

The list for Jacoi seems to make sense - I think a lower level probably makes sense so he can work on his finishing. As for Zam, his injury seemed to come at a bad time as there was a chance at a slightly larger role this year, but it's not worth hyping up any international guys as freshmen unless we see two full seasons out of them at GW (and given the agents of some of these guys, that won't happen very much). You're better signing those guys as fliers to just fill out a roster at this point. Curious to see where Zam goes though. There is ability, but he was always billed as more of a raw prospect.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

As the Rubik's cube slowly starts to get solved, Jun going to Piscataway makes geographic sense. Just a couple of quick hours up the turnpike from home.  As for the fit, I think that Pikiell is the right coach to impart the sorely needed discipline and humility that Jun lacks.  The step up in competition will be a big challenge.  The Rutgers program has had NBA prospects and 4-5 star recruits in recent years, so Jun's skill set will be average at best.  I hope he puts his head down and works to make the most of his abilities.  I'll be rooting for him but somehow I don't think this is his last stop.

As an aside, to this day, I've been confused by the injury reporting for this team.  I haven't dug too deeply but I know nothing about Zam's injury, and was perplexed by Moss, Jun, Dayan and Jacoi.  Ankle injuries only come in a few flavors.  If they aren't in need of surgical repair, they range from a few days to a few weeks for the inflammation to subside and range of motion to return.  Some return remarkably fast and some drag out for exaggerated periods of time.  As for Garrett who has the most complex set of medical challenges, I hope his hip is pain free and his knee is fully rehabbed to the point where he is working back into game shape.  Can't wait to see him in action!

Not off but some problems have arisen with paperwork/admissions. I am told they are surmountable but not done yet.

I had really hoped that with Granberg and Lipitz rowing in the same direction that some of these typical GW admissions complications wouldn’t continue to block otherwise qualified students. When a team can’t enroll a 3 year graduate of Duke without turning itself into a pretzel to satisfy the admissions process, then something is dysfunctional at the university that holds itself in much higher academic regard than the rest of the world. Don’t know what the particulars are in this instance but I’ve heard enough horror stories over the years to lean toward thinking this is just another self-inflicted impediment beyond our tuition cost to competing with our conference peers.

For as much as whatever is happening can be chalked up to institutional incompetence, it could just as easily be that whoever we are going after took an "I didn't come here to play school" approach to college basketball. For all we know, GW's admin has already dotted their i's and crossed their t's and the hold up is entirely on the prospective transfer not having the grades/credits to transfer.

Doubt it. The kid played and was eligible at another institution that is not some terrible school.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Always been in favor of upholding academic standards.
But since the Maureece Rice thing, it seems like they've been used against us basketballwise. Once just
to settle an internal score, but also in general. That #Only At GW above says it very well.
Enormously proud of many of our basketball players who are or were serious students, from Dr. John
and others from even way further back who became doctors and other non-basketball accomplishments, to the current team.
But since players are pros now, it may be different. Perhaps sadly, so, but that's reality.
Still want players who are real students, too. That focus often pays off on the court as well.
But in any case, if someone is eligible and has met the requirements to be academically in good status at a bonafide institution, especially one that is comparable to or better than GW, don't know why they would be held up unnecessarily.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Speaking of upholding academic standards, when was the last time you heard someone say that a player was on academic probation? Think way back and add to that the fact that many players are attending a new college every year. They must all be geniuses! Grades seem almost irrelevant.
