Final Result: GW survives Hampton pressure defense to take 72-69 victory in Florida.
GW starting 5 – Andrews, Lewis, Matthews, Mott, and Planes Fortuny. The Revs again opened the game without a true point guard and as expected, the first few trips on offense were not smooth. GW managed to settle down, and by working the ball inside, took an 8-2 lead at the 5:00 mark of the 1st quarter. After the media timeout, the Hampton press started to bother the backcourt, but The Revs settled in and a buzzer beating 3-pointer by Parnell gave GW a 18-11 1st quarter lead. Both teams struggled on offense to start the second quarter and GW, stymied by missed layups, could only net 6 points going into the official timeout. Hampton was able to cut into the lead as GW could only muster a 24-17 margin at the 4:09 mark. Hampton made a run, but GW managed to close out the quarter with a 30-15 lead. Planes Fortuny had 8 points for GW, followed by Mott’s 6 points. Clinton led all scorers with 10 points for Hampton. Hampton was able to score 11 points off GW’s turnovers to prevent a larger deficit going into the half, while GW held a 20-12 edge in points-in-the-paint. A Hampton flurry to open the 3rd quarter allowed the Pirates to creep back into the game and at the media timeout, GW held just a 35-34 lead with 5:00 to go. Aided by an 8-0 run (all free throws), GW was able to extend to a 50-40 lead going into the final period. After trading scores early in the 4th quarter, GW succumbed to the Pirates’ pressure, allowing them to score easy baskets and tie the score. The final minutes saw multiple trips to the foul line for both teams, but GW was able to prevail and take a 72-69 win. Planes Fortuny led GW with 18 points, while Mott’s huge 16/14 double-double led the way. Clinton led all scorers with 24 points, while Amyah Reaves poured in 15 points for the Pirates.

Opponent Summary: On Saturday, GW faces the Hampton University Pirates of the CAA in the second matchup of the Florida International University (FIU) Christmas Classic at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center. The Pirates come into Saturday afternoon’s contest with a 3-6 OOC record, following a win earlier this week against to Gardner-Webb and Friday’s loss to tournament host FIU. Although picked to finish last in the MEAC, they are somewhat of an enigma, as they have had some bad losses mixed in with victories that include an overtime win against P5 opponent Georgia in Athens, GA. Hampton is led by Jasha Clinton, a graduate student transfer from Temple, who is the only double-digit scorer for Hampton at 14.1 ppg. Forward Jenae Dublin, adds 9.3 ppg and leads the team in rebounding at 6.0 rpg., while CeCe Thomas pitches in 8.3 ppg. As a team, Hampton scores 59.1 ppg, while allowing 70.6 ppg. The Pirates shoot 38.3% from the field (30.2% from 3-point range) and have an assist-to-turnover ratio of .6.
About the Game: GW, coming off yesterday’s big loss to Miami, has to be leery of Hampton. Although the Pirates have some offensive deficiencies, their pressure defense has force

Final Result: GW loses big, 74-49, as offense struggles.
Latest starting 5 for GW: Andrews, Engel, Lewis, Matthews, and Planes Fortuny. The opening minutes see-sawed between teams, but a pair of 3’s and some costly turnovers helped Miami take 14-9 lead into the media timeout at 4:28. GW stayed close until the final two minutes, but more careless turnovers and a senseless technical foul by GW’s bench led to an 8-0 RedHawks run and 26-15 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. 14 of 26 Miami’s points came off GW turnovers. In the 2nd quarter, Miami continuously forced GW into difficult shots late in the shot clock, and extended their lead to 33-20 with 4:11 to go in the half. The offensive futility continued, and poor clock management allowed Miami to take a 40-23 lead into the halftime break. GW ‘s lineup (seemingly without Sims, Mott, Sierra-Vargas, Calisto, and Diala) was not cohesive, but gave Kyraha Parnell her most meaningful playing time of the season. Lewis led GW with 8 points at the half. Maya Chandler, the transfer from Chicago Loyola of the A10, led Miami with 15 points. Although GW forced Miami into 5 early 3rd quarter turnovers, they couldn’t take advantage as empty offensive possessions allowed the RedHawks to maintain a 47-30 lead going into the official timeout at 4:54. Miami’s 3-point barrage (10-16 for through 3 periods) continued and the lead swelled to 54-34 at the end of the 3rd. Mott finally entered the game with 50 seconds left in the 3rd, after Loving picked up her 4th foul. In the 4th quarter, GW scores came primarily from the free throw line, and Miami continued their hot shooting to run away with a 74-49 victory. Lewis and Mott had 10 points each for GW. Rodriguez lit it up in the second half to lead Miami with 19 points and Chandler added 17 points. They combined for 7-12 shooting from beyond the arc.
A short-handed GW was no match for Miami of Ohio, but credit the RedHawks defense who turned 18 turnovers i

Opponent Summary: This weekend, GW travels to Miami, FL for the Florida International University (FIU) Christmas Classic in a two-game tournament at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center. On Friday afternoon, the Revs open with the Miami of Ohio RedHawks in the first ever meeting between the two teams. Miami was picked to finish in 8th place in the MAC this season, but has overachieved in the OOC, coming into this tournament at 5-3, with a big 17-point win over Dayton on the road and close losses to Xavier and Purdue. The RedHawks are led by a pair of sophomores— guard Enjulina Gonzales who brings in a 14.4 ppg scoring average, and forward Amber Tretter, who comes in at 11.1 ppg and 7.3 rpg. Tretter sports a 53.4% shooting percentage and Tamar Singer, although she has only taken 21 attempts, has cashed in on 43% of her 3-pointers. is equally proficient from distance, coming into this contest at 40%. As a team, Miami scores at a 71.6 clip, while allowing just 55.3 ppg. They are shooting 43.5% from the field (33% from distance), and have an assist-to-turnover ratio of .8.

Final Result: GW takes down AU on the road 62-47.
A new GW starting 5: Sierra-Vargas, Lewis, Sims, Planes Fortuny and Engel. As you might expect with this starting 5, there was a rocky start. Both teams struggled out of the gate, but some inside baskets staked GW to a 6-3 lead going in to the media timeout. After the timeout, the offensive struggles continued for both teams but a pair of treys in the final minute by GW gave them a 16-8 lead going into the 2nd quarter. Good offensive board work helped GW increase the lead to 22-10 and force an early Eagles’ timeout at 6:03. GW’s offensive flow improved to close out the quarter, while AU continued to struggle. GW took 34-19 lead into the half. GW had great scoring balance, led by Matthews with 7 points, Loving and Andrews with 6 points each, and then Engel with 5 points. AU was led by Ellie Pingree with 6 points. Notably, the Revs 4 turnovers in the half. The 3rd quarter started much like the 1st, with either team getting a lot going. GW managed to keep a 39-26 lead going into the official timeout at 4:43. A 10-5 GW run to close out the 3rd quarter gave the Revs a 49-31 lead going into the final period. Aided by a pair of 3-pointers, AU cut into the margin, but GW answered to keep the lead at 56-39 with 4:24 to go. GW slowed the pace and a couple of late 3-pointers by AU helped reduce the margin to the final 62-47 score. Andrews led the Revs with 16 points, followed by Matthew’s 10 points. Sierra-Vargas had a good all-around game and finished with 8 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 0 turnovers. AU was led by Rescifina and Nogues who each had 10 points.
It was hard to draw any conclusions from this game because of the level of competition, but some things stood out. The good: GW had only 8 turnovers for the game. The bench provided 34 points, and GW won the battle inside with a 38-16 edge in points-in-the-paint. The Revs shot a respectable 40.3% for the game.

Conference: Patriot League
Time: December 16, 2024; 7 PM ET
Venue: Bender Arena - Washington, DC
2023-24 Record: 10-20 (8-10 in Patriot League – 9th Place)
2025 Projection: 10th
Current Record: 0-8

Last Time Out: 69-59 loss to GW in 2023-24 (at Smith Center)
Broadcast: ESPN+
Opponent Summary: Local rival American University (AU) hosts the GW Revs at Bender Arena on Monday evening. The Eagles, who were picked to finish last in the Patriot league this season, have yet to win a game this year. In their most recent outing, they were soundly beaten by Towson 89-62. The only returning starter from last year’s squad is graduate student Ivy Bales, who averages just 4.8 ppg and 4.6 rpg, but was a Patriot League All Defensive Team selection last year. AU’s best players this season have been freshmen. Forward Celia Kay, who comes in with 11.3 ppg and 7.6 rpg credentials leads the way, followed by guard Molly Driscoll, who scores at an 8.9 ppg clip. As a team, the Eagles put up 57.6 points per game on 35.1% shooting from the field (25.4% from beyond the arc), while allowing 72.6 ppg to their opponents. AU’s assist-to-turnover ratio is .7.
About the game: Like GW, AU is working to integrate their talented young newcomers with an assembly of more experienced players that have not played a lot of minutes together in the past. Also, like GW, they are work in progress and have yet to hit their stride. But despite AU’s 0-8 record, this is a dangerous game for the Revs because the Eagles have

DMV is right in asserting the continuity of last year’s team, but they weren’t McCombs recruits (which is irrelevant), and more importantly that group (as freshmen and sophomores) had a low ceiling as far as potential goes compared to the current squad. And despite the lack of continuity, this current team’s offense seems better than last year.
There are bigger problems. Ignoring the X’s and O’s for now, there have been two weaknesses on the recruiting side that really hurt this team: (1) GW has failed to recruit a post player that can be a consistent inside scoring threat. The last one I can remember was Caira Washington. The crop of portal recruits (Durant, Mott, Planes Fortuny) has only been adequate (both offensively and defensively), and the high school recruits (Loving and Parnell) have not shown a lot of promise. This has made the offense one dimensional and much easier for the opposition to defend. (2) GW has not had a great ball handler and playmaker under McCombs. Mei-Lyn Bautista was the last, and although not a big scorer, she could break down a defense without turning the ball over and make a timely pass or basket. Under McCombs, ball handling has been only average and susceptible to turnovers. With the exception of Lakstigala, the portal has not really panned out for GW. It’s not clear what the Revs recruiting strategy is, but the emphasis should be placed on acquiring complements and not clones.
There’s no question that this coaching regime is on the hot seat. Is there too much to fix in too little time? I guess we’ll see. But I’m pulling for them, because I dread another mass exodus to the portal and total restart.

Final Result: GW falls in overtime to Coppin State 64-61.
New look starting 5 for GW: Andrews, Lewis, Mott, Planes Fortuny and Reynolds. The Revs started out under control, made good passes, and took advantage of their inside game to take a 10-5 lead into them media timeout. The GW offense stalled after the timeout, missing a few opportunities due to some errant open shots and turnovers. For Coppin, Jones had a hot streak to stake the Eagles to a 16-13 lead going into the 2nd period. The teams traded scores to open the 2nd quarter, but CSU managed to increase the lead to 23-19 at the 4:38 mark. A surprise entry for GW, Sierra-Vargas, sparked the Revs to overcome the Eagles 3-point shooting and knot the game at 29-all going into the half. At this point, Lewis led GW with 9 points, followed by 8 points from Mott. Jones led the Eagles with 8 points. GW shot 46.2%, but was held scoreless from beyond the arc (0-4). 10 GW turnovers gave CSU a 9-4 advantage on points off turnovers. GW struggled to make shots early in the 3rd quarter and fell behind, but again, sparked by Sierra Vargas, found their stride to make a 10-2 run and take a 41-39 lead with 2:42 left in the period. CSU came out of the timeout in a zone defense, and without an outside offense, GW could only manage a single bucket in the final moments of the period. A desperation 3-point bank shot at the buzzer gave the Eagles a 44-43 lead heading into the final quarter. Scoring was scarce for both teams to start the final period, but GW’s defense held the Eagles at bay, allowing the Revs to take a 51-50 lead into the final 4 minutes of the game. GW was again stymied by the zone defense, but Engel’s 3-pointer with 14 seconds left in the game tied it at 54-all, making way for GW’s first OT of the season. The Eagles poise showed up in the OT, and while GW raced out to the first 5 points of the period, they could not sustain their offense in the 64-61 loss to Coppin state. Reynolds led GW with 13 p

Like Howard, Coppin State is in the upper tier of the MEAC, projected for a 3rd place finish in the conference. The Eagles have the toughest OOC schedule in all of the MEAC, with losses to the likes of Maryland, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina, but also a significant win against Arizona State. Leading the way for Coppin State is Laila Lawrence, a MEAC preseason All-MEAC 1st Team selection, and Angel Jones, who was named to the preseason 2nd Team. Lawrence, who is also the MEAC’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year, comes into the game averaging 17.6 ppg and 9.3 rpg, with Jones adding 16.0 ppg. Tiffany Hammond, another veteran returning from last year’s squad, chips in with 8.5 ppg. As a team, the Eagles score 62 ppg, while allowing 67.8 ppg. Final Result: Patriots win in a route 87-55.
GW started Andrews, Calisto, Diala, Planes Fortuny and Sims. Sims turned over the ball 4 times in the opening minutes and GW had no answer for the GMU offense, allowing the Patriots to run out to a 14-5 lead in the first 5 minutes. The defense improved for the latter part of the quarter, but the offense was stymied by GMU’s aggressive defense, staking GMU to a 20-10 lead going into the 2nd quarter. GMU continued to show off their talent and depth, surging to a 36-16 lead at the media timeout after more unforced turnovers by GW gave the Patriots multiple easy scores. In the final minutes of the 2nd quarter, the GW defense stiffened and GW played error free ball. A 6-point surge by Andrews, who led the Revs with 9 points at the half, and a couple of clutch 3-pointers by Morgan Matthews, helped GW trim the lead to 41-29 going into the half. GMU was led by Habib’s 13 points and Walton’s 12 points. To start the second half, GW’s offensive execution had no rhythm, leading to several ill-conceived shots and passes and allowed GMU to increase the lead back up to 51-31. The Patriots’ turned GW over multiple times and remained hot in the long game, canning their open 3-pointers to extend the lead to 65-42 at the end of the quarter. No change in the 4th, as GMU continued their 3-point assault and mushroomed the lead 81-50 with 3:34 left in the game. Both benches finished up the game, and GMU came away with a 87-55 victory. Andrews led GW with 23 points on 8-12 shooting, followed by Mathews’ 10 points. For GMU, Habib had 20 points, and Walton chipped in 17 points.
To begin with, make no mistake. The talent gap between GMU and GW is huge. They have a squad full of players who are proficient at scoring. When they got clean shots, they didn’t miss. They shot 48.5% for the game and 37.5% (12-32) from beyond the arc. But, the difference in the game was turnovers, and the Patriots scored [b]33 points on 21

Opponent Summary: GW takes a detour from their OOC schedule on Tuesday to take on local A10 rival George Mason in the first of two conference matchups this season. The Patriots have been on the rise recently, finishing 4th in the A10 last season, and projected for a 3rd place finish this year. They have started strong again this year, with their only loss coming at the hands of Maryland this past weekend in a closely contested game. Although their overall OOC schedule has been somewhat soft, their victories include a solid 50-41 win against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem. GMU returns a talented nucleus from last year’s team, led by preseason All-A10 2nd Team selection Zahirah Walton (11.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg), and 3 preseason All-A10 3rd Team selections, Kennedy Harris (18.3 ppg), Nalani Kaysia (10.0 ppg, 9.8 rpg), and Ta’Viyanna Habib (7.9 ppg). As a team they are scoring at a 77.3 ppg clip, while allowing only 56.1 points per game. Final Result: GW survives late Morgan State run to win 52-47.
To start, Planes Fortuny was in for Mott, who was not available for this game. GW started quickly and jumped out to a 6-0 lead, forcing an early Morgan timeout. GW’s defense remained stout after the timeout, but the offense was stymied by poor shooting and 8 turnovers. The Revs could only produce a single field goal to close out the quarter with a 10-8 lead. The Lady Bears’ press bothered GW to start the 2nd quarter, but GW went to their inside game to build the lead to 17-12 at the media timeout. GW continued the inside assault after the timeout and increased the lead to 23-13 with 2:03 to go. Morgan pressed and shutout the Revs in the final moments, reducing the GW margin to 23-20 going to the half. Andrews had 6 points, followed by Sims’ 5 points. Gabrielle Johnson and Michaela Bogans each had five points for Morgan. Key 1st half stats for GW-- 14 turnovers and no 3-pointers on 6 attempts. To start the 3rd quarter, Morgan moved their press to the half court, taking GW out of their rhythm and tying the score 32-32 at the 4:00 mark. After the timeout, GW regained their composure, and a 12-2 run to end the quarter staked GW to a 44-34 lead. The 4th quarter started out sloppily for both teams, but after 6 minutes of run, GW still led 50-42. GW could only add 2 free throws for the rest of the game, but held on to win 52-47. Andrews finished with 16 points and Lewis finished with 10 points despite fouling out with 3:12 left in the game. Butler finished with a 12/10 double-double for Morgan and Bannerman added 10 points.
This game looked much like the Towson and Georgia Southern games, with GW turning in a shaky performance against defensive pressure that resulted in 24 turnovers. Calisto and Andrews were the main culprits, with 6 and 5 turnovers, respectively. Although GW shot a respectable 42.2% for the game, they were 0-9 from distance. The difference for GW today was their improved free thr

To me there is another thing to look out for, and DMV, you’ve alluded to this in the past—can this coaching staff develop our players. One of the biggest enjoyments of GW basketball for me, is to watch recruits stay four years and develop into really good players. I can’t remember anyone doing that since Briana Cummings. With this coaching staff (I know there have been changes), a big disappointment for me was/has been the development of Faith Blethen and Maxine Engel. Both showed great potential in their freshmen year, but for them, that turned out to be their best year, although the jury is still out on Engel. To be fair, they were not McCombs recruits, and neither were Sophie Haydon, Michelle Ojo, and Leila Patel, who did not pan out. Roberston was a great recruit, but in her two years, we did not see great signs that she was becoming the best version of herself, and Caia Loving has yet to show great improvement from her first two years. That leaves Sara Lewis, Filipa Calisto, Gabby Reynolds, Kamari Sims. All have shown potential to be really good A10 players and Lewis and Sims improved considerably from last year. The big test for the coaching staff is whether they can turn Reynold into top A10 talent and sustain the growth of the others-- who are keys to this program’s future. Just something to take notice on as the season goes on.

Opponent Summary: The Morgan State Lady Bears visit the Smith Center on Wednesday for a noon tipoff. Oddly, this is GW’s first ever meeting with our neighbors from Baltimore. After Sunday’s loss at Nevada, Morgan comes into the game at 4-5. The Lady Bears are another MEAC team that has challenged themselves in their OOC. Included in their other losses are road contests against Richmond, Stanford, and Old Dominion. Morgan did manage a 64-63 home victory over Towson, a recent GW opponent. Final Result: GW defense stifles GSU, stays unbeaten at home with 56-46 win
.
GW again started with the lineup of Andrews, Calisto, Diala, Planes Fortuny, and Sims. GW started out solidly on defense, limiting GSU to just 2-11 from the field. Johnson dominated inside play for the Eagles getting 6 offensive boards in the first 4 minutes of play and causing GW to get into early foul trouble. At the media timeout, GW held a slim 10-7 lead on the strength of a pair of Sims 3’s. GW’s stingy defense held GSU at bay, but 1st quarter turnovers (8 in all), mostly on careless passes, stymied the Revs offense. GW could only muster a 13-10 lead by the end of the period. After scoring the first 5 points of the 2nd quarter, GW forced a quick Eagles timeout at 7:39. A combination of careless GW ball handling, missed shots, and questionable officiating gave GSU life, resulting in a slim GW 24-20 lead at the 3:31 mark of the 2nd period. After a slow final few moments, GW led 31-25 going into the half. Although GW was beating GSU in almost every aspect of the game, 14 1st half turnovers kept GSU in the game. Lewis and Reynolds had 8 points each to lead the Revs, while Gwynn led GSU with 9 points. An early offensive flurry by Sims to start the 3rd quarter staked GW to a 44-35 advantage at the 4:14 timeout. GW managed to extend the lead to 50-37 heading into the 4th quarter, despite more questionable calls from the officials. GW started the quarter out strong, but a 5-minute drought halfway into the final period allowed GSU to peck away at the lead, which stood at 55-45 at the 4:51 mark. The final 4:51 was an exercise in futility, as both teams could only generate a single point each, resulting in a 56-46 GW win. For GW, Lewis had another strong showing with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Sims and Planes Fortuny chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. GSU’s Gwynn led all scorers with 19 points.
GW held GSU to 32.7% shooting (19% from beyond the arc) and forced 22 turn

Final Result: GW’s get back on winning track with 69-57 win over Towson.
GW started with a new lineup of Andrews, Calisto, Diala, Planes Fortuny, and Sims. With the new faces, the offense started out well, with good ball movement leading to 5 inside buckets. The defense failed to stop the Towson 3-point game and the Tigers took a 12-10 lead with 3:13 to go. After the timeout, Reynolds and Lewis hit 3-pointers to help stake GW to a 16-all tie into the 2nd quarter. Semaya Turner had 6 points for Towson in the quarter, while Andrews led GW with 6 points. GW started the 2nd quarter hot, and a 13-4 run forced a Towson timeout. Towson recovered a bit after a few moments of sloppy play by GW, but the Revs managed to take a 36-28 lead into the locker room at the half. GW hit 48.4% from the field in the half, but was just 3-9 from distance. Andrews led GW with 10 points and Reynolds followed with 8 points. Bristol had 9 points for the Tigers and Turner followed with 8 points. Towson’s press rattled the Revs to open the 2nd half and let them cut the lead down to 42-39. GW regained their composure, and a 5-point burst by Calisto put GW ahead at 48-39 with 3:51 left in the 3rd. In the waning minutes of the quarter, GW’s offense and defense struggled, reducing the lead to 50-48 going lead into the final period. Two Andrews baskets to start the 4th quarter forced a quick Towson timeout with 7:51 to go. After some back and forth, GW’s lead stood at 59-53 with 4:31 to go. The Revs’ defense shut down the Tigers in the final moments of the game and came away with a 69-57 win over Towson. Lewis finished with a 14/10 double-double. Andrews had a team high 16 points and Calisto finished with 14 points as well. For Towson, Bristol had 15 points and Leye had a 10/10 double-double.
After the disappointment in Ohio, the Revs competed in a well-deserved win over Towson. With the Bobcats in their rearview mirror, Lewis and Reynolds bounced back with solid performance
