Nice comeback win for Bona over Duquesne. Down double digits in the second half. They fought back at the very end to tie with 2 minutes. I'm hoping we stick to our game plan and what has worked during conference play and continue to get Castro the ball inside. College teams tend to shoot worse from deep in NBA arenas, which theoretically should help us since we get a lot of our points inside. Key will be to maintain the effort which we've done all season on the defensive end.

Wow, Fordham up 20 with 5 minutes left in the first half.

GW Men's Hoops » GW BEATS St. Bonaventure Game Thread » 2/09/2025 11:12 pm

Any win in Olean is a always a bonus, especially considering the fact that we didn't shoot the ball particularly well and turned the ball over 20 times. Really liked Jun's passing and hope this game helps get him back in rhythm. Also loved Ty Bevin's minutes. His energy on defense was a real boost and his 3-pointer early in the 2nd half helped slow the Bonnie's momentum after they had started the half with a 9-4 run to take their first lead of the game. Also happy to see Jacoi have a good, efficient game on both sides of the ball. After shooting close to 44% in conference games last season, he's shooting just 21% in conference games this year. He looked more assertive driving to the basket today, so hopefully he's got his mojo back.  I think I may have predicted, along with many of you, that we'd be 5-6 at this point in the season, but I don't think anyone had 4 of those wins being against Dayton, St. Louis, and on the road at Bona and URI. I'm really looking forward to the upcoming conference tournament as the league is wide open this year. There are 10 teams in 4th to 13th place within 2 games of one another, with records of 6-5 to 4-7, and against 2 of the top 3 teams (GMU, VCU & St. Louis), we've gone 1-2, but should have gone 2-1 or 3-0.

Obviously the short term earning potential of a 3 or 4 star player is going to be better at a power 5 school than in conferences like the A-10, however I'm curious if there have been any studies on the long term earning potential of similar athletes that are bench players at power 5 schools versus having staring roles in lower conferences. Does starting and playing significant minutes at a lower level conference provide more exposure and better prepare players for pro careers than being a role player at a higher level, or does that player have a better chance of improving their game by practicing against high major talent at a BCS school?

Great win after Rhode Island fought back to erase a 15-point lead. Excellent game for our front court with Castro's scoring and Hansen's passing. Also good minutes from Nessah, who gave us an extra possession with his tip out on an offensive rebound. Am loving the depth that's materializing with Bevins and Nessah able to give productive minutes defensively and on the glass. With Castro's 16 points tonight we've now had 8 different leading scorers through 15 games. That's got to be pretty unique. Go Revs!

No A-10 action tonight, but I just checked the top 25 scoreboard and saw that no.1 ranked Tennessee lost by 30 to Florida (73-43). I can't remember the last time a top ranked team was beaten by a margin that large. Apologies in advance to Tennessee Colonial.

The 60-foot shot by Nembhard was also launched with over 3 seconds left, so there was plenty of time to get a better shot. Gonzaga did draw up a great play down 63-60 with 13 seconds left, where Nembhard passed the ball to the front court, then immediately received the ball back and made a layup and got fouled with 8 seconds left. Unfortunately, he missed the and one to tie the game, which led to the desperation heave at the end of regulation. The announcers were also dumfounded by the shot from that distance with several seconds remaining and speculated that he must have been frazled by the missed game-tying free throw from moments earlier. Final plays are at the 2:30 mark of the highlights linked here: https://youtu.be/cAVcXIA5Tlk

I also enjoyed the podcast and will try to tune in to future episodes. I didn't get a chance to watch the FGCU-Richmond game but checked the box score this morning and was surprised by the final score. I think Richmond was favored by 2.5 points and led by 4 with 6 minutes left in the 1st half. Richmond also went 18-19 from the line, so the scoring margin could have been even greater had they shot their season average. I agree that it feels like we're catching Richmond at a good time and should come away with a win on the road. Richmond is currently last among A-10 teams in FG% (2nd to last in 3-pt FG%), last in rebounding, steals, assists, but is 1st in defensive rating. They're 2nd to last in offensive rating, where we're 3rd best, so it'll be interesting to see how our offense performs against their defense.

I really enjoyed watching the bench players get some extended minutes today. I've been a Nessah fan since watching some of his games with the U-18 Swiss team over the summer and like that he's looked comfortable out on the court considering his limited minutes so far this season. On the defensive end his athleticism and length allow him to be a good help defender and he appears to have good instincts and regularly seems to get himself in good rebounding position. On the offensive end, aside from his 3-point shooting, he's kept several possesions alive crashing the boards and tipping balls awat from defenders, and his ability to put the ball on the floor and get by his defender will be needed needed while Jun is getting some rest. He also looks to have good hands and had been able to control some passes that have been slightly off target while cutting to the hoop. I'd love for us to have a 10-man rotation with Bevins and Nessah, with occasional full court pressure. They both also have decent rebounding rates, albeit in limited minutes, which is an area this team needs to improve on, especially on the defensive end.

Does anyone know if there's a block of tickets for the AU game available through the GW ticket office?  If I remember correctly, in the past there have been tickets behind the visitor's bench that could be purchased through the GW box office.

GW Men's Hoops » Secret Scrimmages or Exhibition? » 9/22/2024 12:20 pm

Has anyone heard whether we've scheduled any scrimmages or preseason exhibition games this year? I don't recall whether there were any scheduled last year? I think we scrimmaged Drexel in 2022 if I remember correctly. I had heard this summer that the NCAA was going to remove the requirement that scrimmages be closed to the public, however it looks like that proposal was scrapped for now.

https://www.ncaa.org/news/2024/6/27/media-center-proposals-focused-on-preseason-practice-scrimmages-exhibitions-and-multiple-team-events-in-mens-basketball-tabled.aspx

I'm not too clear on the current rules, but it sounds like Men's teams are still allowed to schedule two pre-season scrimmages or exhibitions against non-D1 opponents that are closed to the public, with the exception being charity games to raise funds after a 'catastrophic event' (not sure how they define that). Are teams still allowed to schedule 1 exhibition game that is open to the public? I'm pretty sure there were exhibition games in the past that didn't count against the standings. With so many new faces, it would be nice for them to get an officiated game in prior to the start of the regular season.

GW Men's Hoops » Welcome Dayan Nessah! » 7/28/2024 4:20 pm

I'm try to temper my expectations, but after watching some older highlights and yesterday's game I'm getting excited to see Dayan i'm a Revs jersey. He looks to be very athletic and skilled. In the game against Poland he showed he could create offense for himself and his teammates off the dribble. Saw the court exceptionally well, and was a very willing passer. He some very nice passes after beating his man off the dribble, and should have had 3 or 4 more assists had his teammates been able to finish a little better. He also handled the ball on several occasions the full length of the floor through traffic leading to buckets for himself and his teammates. Also battled hard for rebounds. If you have a chance, the replay is worth checking out.

GW Men's Hoops » GW Beats Ohio Game » 11/25/2023 8:40 am

Edwards seemed to be pressing on offense early on, but as usual his efforts on the boards impacted the game while his shots weren't falling. In the 2nd half he made several winning plays, including diving for a loose ball on the defensive end and getting a time out called before Ohio was able to tie him up, intercepting one or two passes after Ohio had inbounded the ball, and a pair of steals on what appeared to be sure rebounds for Ohio. Plus those tough 3-pointers in the 2nd half and OT. It's been very impressive that he's shot 50% from deep this year considering the level of difficulty of his 3-point attempts thus far.  Buchanan was also really impressive again getting buckets whenever the Revs needed one. He's been able to consistently get to the basket and draw fouls this year, and is shooting 65% on his 2-point attempts for the season. It seems like he could be drawing a foul every time he drives to the basket. It's very impressive that as a first year player with his style of play, that he's able to play under control without drawing charges. His footwork, balance, and touch have stood out. I could see him becoming the primary focus of our opponents scouting reports in the not to distant future as he'll present match up problems for many teams we'll face.

GW Men's Hoops » GW Beats Ohio Game » 11/20/2023 6:28 pm

Does anyone know if any of the restaurants or bars near campus (or in Arlington) will be showing the game with sound? I called Tonic earlier today but was told that they'll be closed on Friday. It doesn't look like there are a lot of other games going on at 7:00 on Friday so hopefully it won't be too hard to find someplace to watch the Revs game.
