I'm not saying any A10 team would ever be able to duplicate Steph's story (link below), but my instincts tell me that a true, long-term investment in GW basketball could pay big dividends for the school.

I think you're right about BCS politics/$$$, and that the Flyers deserve consideration. The only way I see us getting two teams in is if Dayton beats VCU again in the finals.

Not to be a downer, but why does Drumgoole start? Caputo has better options, doesn't he? I think Darren, Bevins and Nessah are all more reliable and equally as good defensively.

I was skeptical when you asked the question, but after looking at the data, I'd be curious if we have the worst OOC Home Strength of Schedule in college basketball history. For comparison's sake:
The 2005-06 Non-Conference Home Schedule featured:
Exhibition with Augusta State, followed by Kennesaw State (KenPom #308), Norfolk State (#288), St. Francis (PA) (#326), Boston University (#203), FIU (#274), and UMES (#325). Despite a neutral site game against #23 Maryland and a true road game at #19 NC State, it was still KenPom's second-worst Non-Con Strength of Schedule in the country.
Average KenPom Rating from Non-Con Home Opponents: #287 (Total D1 teams: 334)
2023-24:
We also had the second-worst overall non-conference strength of schedule last year! Stonehill (#359), William & Mary (#319), Hofstra (#113), New Hampshire (#246), Navy (#323), Coppin St. (#361), Bowie State (D2), Alcorn St. (#294), UMES (#347).
Average End of Season KenPom Rating from Non-Con Home Opponents: #291 (Total D1 teams: 362)
2024-25:
Based on what we know from GWRising so far, opponents and 2023-24 KenPom Ratings: Mercyhurst (n/a), Hampton (#341), NC A&T (#346), NJIT (#335), VMI (#353), Army (#344), Lafayette (#318) and UVA-Wise (n/a)
Average 2023-24 KenPom Rating from Non-Con Home Opponents: #324 (Total D1 teams: 362)
Thanks everyone. I guess it could be worse and I'm looking forward to the A10 games.

I rarely post anymore and don't go to many games, but I come to the site almost daily so that I can keep up with the program. I've always loved GW Basketball, even when the team doesn't perform well or there's some other issue (coach, AD, whatever). I'd like to get season tickets one day when I have more time and the team gets it's act together. For now, thank you to the board admin and the many great board participants for keeping this site going.

Great to see GW so well represented when it comes to end of season awards. It's been too long. Congrats to James, Brendan (x2), and Max. I hope James comes back next season, wins POY and is drafted into the NBA. Also, congrats to Coach Caputo and his staff for a great first season. I think Coach of the Year is in his future.

The choices are (expletive deleted) awful and embarrassing for the school. We will be mocked endlessly for almost any of the choices enumerated and rightfully so. The best choice and perhaps the only choice is for the school to admit this was a disastrous move and revert back to the Colonials. Somewhere throughout this process there has to be an adult in the room. This sounds like the process I used when I coached my daughters 3rd grade soccer team and the girls wanted to pick the team name ... sharks, minnows, dolphins, cardinals, blue jays, kitty cats, puppies, etc.... you get the picture. They want our money but they want to waste it on pure nonsense. The cost of rebranding will be significant. I don't know whether to laugh or cry that this is where we find ourselves.
GWRising, I understand and respect that you are an individual with strong opinions, and you're not embarrassed to share them. I think Sharks, Dolphins, Cardinals and Blue Jays are all good team names for kid's soccer teams.

I realize many of us have poked fun at this whole exercise but at the end of the day, whatever nickname is chosen is presumably one we'll need to live with for a long time. I've spoken to about 8 different individuals over the past few days, both alum and non-alum. Sadly, each one approached me rather than the other way around. To those who were unaware, I shared the 10 finalist names being considered.
The subsequent feedback was awful. I hope that there are people reading this who are either in a position to enact change or who know people with this capacity. Please...go back to the drawing board. These are just not good choices. Some of these are just terrible sports nicknames (can you imagine if we were really regarded as The Catalysts moving forward), some of them perhaps convey the right idea but instead, the wrong word is being used (monuments, not monumentals), some may be going for a cool vibe that may not translate well (one person said the Blue Fog sounds like an environmental disaster), one fails to account for the perception of political divisiveness within the school (The Squad), one connotes violence and weaponry (Revolutionaries), etc.
Also, does anyone know how the final selection will actually be made? The school has announced a series of opportunities to make your choice known, but in the end, will this boil down to a popular vote? Will there be a committee of a handful of folks who ultimately make the decision? Or, do we turn this over to the branding agency as well?
GWmayhem, I respect your opinion, but respectfully disagree with some of the input you received. I don't like most of the names either (and would prefer to keep the Colonials moniker), but as long as the school is moving forward with the change, I think the moniker "Truth" is excellent and meets all of the school's guidelines. It's a moniker that can be easily branded and I think it will be well received by most, other than those of us

As usual the administration has botched this from the start, and embarrassed all of us who try to rep our GW fandom.
I don't agree that the name change is a good idea, but I'd say calling the choices a disgrace is just not nice. The university is doing their best. I can't see any other option other than being supportive. I think we should get on board or get off the train.

I don't think it's a question of CC learning and more of a question of CC trying to do what he can with basically no bench and serious deficiencies in the front court. He may look back at this as one of his better coaching jobs given what he has to work with this season. Frankly, I had him winning 8-10 games maximum this season. In reality, he is coaching someone else's guys within his system. Adams and Bishop can only take this team so far. Any coach worth his salt can find ways to limit them. The only way you beat that is to have the other guys make them pay. Unfortunately, none of the other guys have shown the consistent ability to be an offensive threat. Max has his moments so does Ricky. There is a Hunter sighting on offense every now and then. It's just the consistency. When all those guys play well, we win. But many nights they aren't going to all play well. And then what answers does CC have on the bench?
So again, take the wins we get. When we go to Brooklyn, we will be asking the impossible on back to back days with 8 guys. Enjoy the rest of the season. For this program, what will matter most is what transpires post-season in terms of recruiting players.I'll go one better Rising. I'd contend that we haven't really even seen CC's system yet. Given what he's inherited coupled with a serious and increasing lack of depth, CC has opted to devise ways to keep his players out of foul trouble as best he can. This means challenging far fewer shots defensively than his teams otherwise might. Realizing that this translates to giving up more easy points than he would like, the philosophy has been to outscore opponents in high scoring games. Consider that GW has scored at least 75 points in all but one of its victories this season. The team is the 95th highest scoring team in the country, out of 360+ Division 1 programs.
…
And yet, my sense is that CC would love to win by playing great defense first and foremost.

Although the game wasn't what we hoped, perhaps the best thing that happened Saturday was Mike Jarvis taking shots at the name change while addressing the Colonials Club before the game in front of board members, President Wrighton, and TV. There was a lot of applause for his remarks on that. Suffice it to say, this is not popular among the alums or HOFers ... at least those older than 40.
GWRising, it's nice to hear Mike Jarvis doesn't like the idea of the name change. What specifically did he say? By the way, I consider myself fairly woke, and don't like the way you insult people who are outspoken on social issues like race, human sexuality and other social issues of the day, but I do agree with you (and many others here) that the name change is unwarranted.

I think Coach English's stating that the skill sets of James to Fernandes are identical is insulting to James. I feel Bishop is a much more talented offensive player than Fernandes and is at least in the same neighborhood defensively. Anyone could see that by watching the game yesterday. I understand the coach was frustrated coming off a tough loss on his home court, but to take a cheap shot at James (even if it wasn't completely intentional) is JV, in my opinion.

I saw the game last night and thought we played well in the 1st half. But it seemed to me that we got tired in the 2nd which wasn't a surprise because of the hard minutes our starters were playing. So many of our shots were short and we didn't defend well. I know EJ and Daniel are lost for the season but why not give Keegan some minutes? Keegan probably wouldn't have shot much worse from 3 than the rest of the team did and he could have given a break to some of our big minute players. I think it might have been worth a try. And because Ricky seems to almost get seriously injured in most games because he always gives 110%, I think he, in particular could use a some more breaks during the game.

After years of complaints directed at each other by students and alumni for their indifference and apathy toward GW men's basketball (women's basketball is a whole other story), the student section has come alive this year. Byron Kerr and Jimmy Patsos have talked about it on their broadcasts. Jon Rothstein and Pete Gillen talked about it on CBSSports last night. Chris Caputo has talked about the potential of the student 6th man in the Smitty ever since he came to GW, even if most of us sort of rolled our eyes about the prospects for a return of the long bygone glory days of students circling the Smith Center before ball games waiting to get into the building to get good seats. Check out the decidedly sports indifferent GWToday joining the athletic website in paying homage to the student excitement at the Smith Center.

Last night's awesome performance by the team doesn't have to be a one-off. Coach Caputo clearly has a vision in mind for this program. His players on hand obviously are buying in. His incoming recruits believe. Current students stirred on by the efforts of George's Army, other obsessive GW student fans and school media, and the energy and commitment of Coach Caputo and his players are turning this place and program around. The more those stands get filled, the more athletics gets its coffers filled with donations, the more buzz that gets created around the program, the more the school and its Trustees will have to pay attention to the value of sports at GW. We all know how much of a home court advantage the Smith Center can be. When GWToday picks up and disseminates a story about rabid student engagement at the men's basketball game, perhaps the rest of the university community will get the message. It really is OK for GW basketball fans to focus on the positive. It really is OK to believe we are seeing a rebirth at the Smith Center. (And it really is OK t

First, ML should definitely be in the GW HOF at a minimum. Period. The Pete Rose analogy is not even close.
Second, Skittles is correct the 2016 NIT Championship will likely be the only national championship GW ever wins in men's basketball at least at the D1 level.
Third, ML should get a lifetime achievement award from GWHoops for having to deal with the Dude's non-stop campaign of nonsense and trolling. ML obviously lives rent free in the Dude's pea brain which means he takes up almost all the space.
I happen to agree that ML was an excellent coach and, from what I know, was wrongfully terminated, which I assume is why he received a nice settlement.
I hope coach Caputo has great success. But, if he fails, is there any scenario that Lonergan would come back to GW? For example, lets say GW offers a public apology to ML, which I think they should. Would that, plus a competitive contract, be enough to get Coach Lonergan back to GW?

Gwmayhem, I think Yuta, Joe and Garino and the three transfers, Cavanaugh, Armwood and Creek all deserve serious consideration for top 100. If it were up to me, all six of them would be in. I think Savage is the the most worthy of the questionable entries, but I'd still vote no on him. If he stayed and remained on his trajectory, I think he'd probably crack the top 100. GW0509 provides a very nice analysis.
If you agree about some (or all) of these six players being in the top 100, which of the 20 or so players on your 80 - 100 list would have to be removed?
