My standards are is the tournament in a middle school gym and on Flo Hoops or
not? This one may at least be on ESPN+

Laughed out loud at the Flo Hoops reference.

Times really have changed. Used to be a "good" schedule was one that included a game or two on TV. Now a "good" schedule is one that allows us to stream all games without having to deal with FloSports! Actually, I have no problem with "zero games on FloSports" as a baseline metric.

GW Other Sports » RevsBall season #1 » Yesterday 11:13 pm

After getting swept over the weekend at Richmond, RevsBall is now 21-15 (4-5 A10). URI comes to town this weekend for three games.

GW Men's Hoops » Our Difficult Off-Season Discussion » 4/15/2024 3:00 pm

More important than the dismissal of an abusive bigot who got in to a public spat with his boss is the fact that the University is on its fourth President since winning the NIT. Not only has the college sports panorama changed, but the policy dynamic at GW has gone through massive swings. No school goes through that much leadership upheaval and comes out unscathed, GW is no exception.
The women's team has lost a step (or two, or ten) since Joe McKeown left for family reasons, but did rebuild after Joe's successor proved unable to do the job (before again regressing). Volleyball, baseball and both football/soccer teams have proven that a few down seasons do not permanently tank the program. So men's basketball can return to some semblance of glory. HOWEVER, the post-pndemic NIL/megaconference world we are in now will be more of a hindrance than any H.R. moves made last decade.
Adapt or die. It is a "new world order" that sports are operating in now. The football-induced reallignment that appeases the gods (ABC/ESPN and NewsCorp/Fox, in this case) leaves small schools like GW in a more difficult position than ever before, even if an NIT banner hangs in the gym. GW cannot compete with Ohio St, U$C, Alabama, LSU or even Nike-backed Oregon on an even financial playing field. This, more than any perceived "self harm" eight years ago, is what should be worrying Colonials-cum-Revolutionaries fans.
So to win, GW needs to have consistent administrative support and then to parlay its advantages to attain its niche. (Applies to sports as well as other fields-- would be dumb to try to turn the school in to yet another run-of-the-mill STEM school, for example). Let other schools provide recruits hookers and drugs and mortgage payments (Coach Cal, anyone?), and let GW focus on what makes it such a good place to earn a degree from. That might not land too many obvious NBA first rounders, but consistent roster churn is not winning many games for GW right now.

Unmentioned in this thread so far but two of the biggest women's jobs opened up this month. Looks like $tanford is going in-house to replace retiring Tara van Derveer while Tennessee poached Marshall's coach after her one season there.

GW Men's Hoops » Michigan's Miss Basketball is coming to GW » 3/19/2024 6:39 pm

Not the first Miss Basketball from Michigan to come to GW. Jen Shaskey came to GW drawn to the SIA's Soviet Studies program (yes, that carbon dates me, too), and to play hoops. She was still playing basketball after studying the USSR stoped being a part of current events courses and transitioned to the history department.

Michigan can throw more money at sports teams (coaches, facilities, players, etc...) than Marquette, so in that sense it is a "better" place for a coach. Then again, at Michigan basketball is a second-rate citizen behind football, while at Marquette the team is almost getting more attention than the local NBA team. So?

it's a bit strange to have to announce your intention on staying at the school you're currently attending,

I fear that in this new era only a minority of players will stay put, and most of them because either they are at a place that pays more than the pros (Ohio St, U$C, 'Bama, etc...) or because they are the outliers who actually use an athletic scholarship to earn a meaningful degree and like the program on offer where they attend.
Glad he is returning, wouldn't it be something if following his Conference Rookie of the Year snub he becomes a confirmed Conference Player of the Year.

The confetti is released with 18 minutes left in the game as the ball is in play in the A10 championship. Incredible. No notes

Not since Chaney went after Calapari in the press room (or was it vice versa?) has a single moment so loudly proclaimed "THIS IS THE ATLANTIC 10!"

Expanding the field is more of fixing something that isn't broken. Like anytime Microsoft rolls out a new version of Windows, fixing something that does not need fixing means the product gets worse.
Of course, it is inevitable. Why? Not because fans are clamouring for it but because TV sees a way to make a quick buck.
The only expansion I'd welcome is expanding the field to every DI school, but setting the brackets by a random drawing. Maybe give a few top performing teams a bye or two, but after that everyone's place in the Tournament would determined by drawing lots and nothing else. TV/sponsors would get their extra game units to sell, but be robbed of their influence on who gets in or who they play.

Regarding the center position, I wish we would do what Richmond does. They always seem to have a big white dude that looks like he doesn’t have an athletic bone in his body and yet has excellent fundamentals and footwork and is therefore able to consistently produce points and rebounds. I wonder whether they somehow find these guys or are just much better at coaching big men…

Last guy like that I remember us having was Alexander Koul. Or maybe even as far back as Bill Brigham.

"Big white dude"? So racial quotas are the reason GW's interior play looked like a claymation short? The lack of "fundamentals" has a skin deep explaination?

Nice try, but I don’t care what race or ethnicity any of our players are. It just so happens that the Richmond centers tend to be white. Find me someone with those other attributes and I don’t care if they’re white, black, Latino, Asian, Arab, or anything else. Just find me a center with some solid fundamentals and great footwork.

I would hope that is true. But you did reference the race of Richmond's bigs as a positive and the only players you named are white. (Sonni Holland, Dokun Akingbade, Regis Kundja, Pat Ngomba and Yinka Dare all fit the description, and were at GW after Brigham, and are not white). I really don't want this thread to degenerate in to accusations of racism, so perhaps we all should proofread before posting anything that references race to make sure the wording expresses what we want it to.

Last place in the standings and out of the conference tourney on Day 1. About all that needs to be remembered about the 2023-24 men's basketball season.

Don't leave your feet on defense. If you are going to foul a guy on a fast break, make sure he does not make the lay-in.
These are pretty basic things coaches in junior high teach.
