The Caymans are expensive. Like really expensive. To be expected when your main industries are money laundering, hiding money from the taxman, and laundering money being hidden from the taxman. However, the diving there is better than fantastic.

Re: GW BEATS Illinois St Game Thread

Biggest question for me was why it took so long for CC to figure out that we needed to put another body on Walker when he got near the paint, rather than let him push our guy underneath the bucket before he tossed it in.   Seemed like somehow Trey ended up guarding him one on one multiple times in the first half unless my eyes deceived me.  Very curious.  Trey redeemed himself on offense late and was the difference maker ultimately.   Liked Drumgoole's game on both ends - especially his spirited play.   Still some lingering concerns re Jun.   His 3 point attempts didn't even draw iron.   Don't fault his commitment , effort, and desire, but it seems he is having too much difficulty trying to get his shot (driving inside the paint) against any serious concerted defensive scheme.   It just seemed he was somehow much more adept at penetrating last year, and was, frankly, more aggressive with and without the ball.  Just an observation............

Re: GW BEATS Illinois St Game Thread

I think Jim has the skill set - he just needs to adapt to being the focus of the defense.  Last year, the focus was on Bishop so Jim was able to exploit the fact that they were not going to double him most plays.  Stop Bishop stop GW.  Now it is stop Jun stop GW.  He has good passing instincts- he needs to get his team to hit shots early (hopefully) and that will open up the lane for him a ton.

Re: GW BEATS Illinois St Game Thread

As LSF wrote, we had a great time in St Thomas, especially going 2-1. Gutsy comeback yesterday after things looked grim. Also a good comeback against K St but they made some tough shots after we got within 4.

Autrey was great yesterday and made big shots down the stretch. Playing with confidence, which I think is critical particularly for him. He was clearly loose and ready to go during warmups.

I’d like to see Jun on the low block playing with his back to the basket occasionally. If we get him the ball down there, think he could do some damage with his size and strength.

Yes, he did. He also scored the last two US points in the infamous final game of the 1972 Olympics -- two free throws.

Great win. Drumgoole deserved a shout out. He made I thought 2 key defensive plays that turned the game. One was when he stepped up perfectly on the double team and drew a foul on Walker that got Walker out of the game. Then about a minute later, he had a spectacular block at the rim (and secured the rebound himself).

Tremendous work from Drumgoole. His best game of the year and I hope he can keep bringing that defense.

Will also add, this was a really good win to prepare us for the A10. Redbirds were packing it down and we were settling for drive and kicks that we mostly missed or were afraid to shoot. But then we just ground it out, getting inside (which then opened up different kinds of threes for Autry, Drumgoole, and Hutch). And at the same time we were outstanding on defense. We absolutely took three three ball away from them for almost the whole game, but especially the key last 15 minutes - and we did it without getting beat inside.

This should bump our KenPom a couple of spots (I’d guess 140), and it’s good to see that our play on the court matches that rating. We are clearly improved, especially on the defensive end. Need to keep focused and get better every game.

Long Monday ROFL, yes, two different schools, whoops well....OI VEY at least GW won, E-discovery can fry the brain, so can watching Saquon Barkley run for 255 yards... for the Eagles thank goodness for a good Virgin Isles trip for our GW squad.  Hell yes forgot to mention Drumgoole he was VERY impressive.

DrumGOOD!!! DrumVeryGOOD!!  Liberty won the Tourney and at 7-1 with a KenPom of 53, dont sleep on them for an at large bid potential.  Very solid squad.

Well, might as well look at the Southern Illinois NBA products....Redbirds drafted into the NBA:

Year Player Position Round Overall   NBA Team
1973  Doug Collins SG 1 1  Philadelphia 76ers The #1 overall pick of the NBA Draft

1975 Robert Hawkins SF351Golden State Warriors
1977  Jeff WilkinsC237San Antonio Spurs
1999   Rico HillSF231Los Angeles Clippers

Re: GW BEATS Illinois St Game Thread

Great comeback win! Coming into the game I was worried about how we were going to stop Illinois State on offense. I did not expect by halftime to be wondering how we were going to put up points instead. Credit ISU for a great defensive game plan - they have a nice team, but it seemed like they were worn down by the end of the game.

It feels like I've called out the defense in like 80% of posts the past two years so I'll give credit where it's due. GW played some of the best 40 minutes of D under CC yesterday afternoon. There were still some mismatches exploited due to switching (like Autry having to guard Walker) but it was known that ISU was potent from deep, and they had few open looks. I liked the double team on Walker in the second half, but it was the way that the team did it. It was slightly "delayed" which I think threw the Redbirds off a bit. Credit the guards for recovering fast and contesting the threes when the ball was passed back out along the perimeter. ISU made some tough floaters - Banks in particular had some crazy finishes posting up down low as a guard.

As others have mentioned, this is the kind of game that helps the team learn some things, even if it had been a loss. Against even decent competition, CC can't just have Jun barrel defenders going downhill. It took probably more time than it should have (perhaps that was by design?) to get Jun the ball at different parts of the court outside the top of the key. When he posted up, it caused ISU to collapse and send double teams his way, and he is of course a great passer to find guys like Autry and Drumgoole in the corner. Jun's three point shot looked better against Louisiana, but so many of his attempts just hit the backboard and aren't close to going in. Still outside of that, Buchanan is the exact kind of player I want leading the team. I love his personality outside of basketball - he is super easy to root for and is a great representative of the university. It was also mentioned on the broadcast that he's second in the nation in double doubles? That's impressive regardless of the competition GW has faced. We are fortunate to have him.

Shout out to Gerald Drumgoole. I know people say Kenner performances don't translate to the season (which is mostly true) but his showing as a shooter over the summer made the start to his season confusing. He was definitely a better shooter than he showed. Defensively, his hustle made the difference in key moments - blocking what would have been an easy layup for ISU and getting on the floor for a loose ball. I also really liked that he varied his shot selection - when he took the ball inside and when he shot it from outside. That's something that will be key to GW's season moving forward - live by the three, die by the three will not always be a winning formula. The Revs hit some timely threes, but they cut the lead by going inside as well.

Having Autry step up as a shooter has been huge - most of his shots have been nothing but net. The key with him moving forward will be keeping his confidence high when adversity hits later in the season. I still prefer him as a microwave scorer from off the bench but he was great yesterday, including defensively. I am still going to defend Moss, but it will be tough to continue to do so if he is going to take 6-7 threes a game and go under 30% from those attempts. I liked his first attempt - assisted and open in the corner to get GW on the board. When he has the ball in his hands though and launches from the top of the key, I do not like it as much.

Rafael did not have as dominant of a game - credit Walker of ISU. He did a great job on both sides when not in foul trouble. Hopefully Jacoi can get it going shooting the ball again soon (I wonder how much his injury has played a role). This seemed like a much better matchup for Sean and he did some good things defensively as well when he was in the game.

Sadly we are going to once again return to uninteresting matchups for the next month. Hopefully this ISU game will convince CC to schedule a home and home with a MVC team. The physicality of teams from the conference is a good test for GW.

Re: GW BEATS Illinois St Game Thread

Great observations all the way around.  What seems most encouraging about this years team is the chemistry and mix of youth and experience.  Skill sets aside, the personality of this team is very even keeled.  Castro, Hansen, and Drumgoole play in the moment.  They balance the sometime emotional outbursts of Jun, Autry, and Jacoi. Not saying that passion is bad but it’s nice when it doesn’t drag on.  It also helps the morale of the bench.  Happy for CC and the guys accomplishing 2 wins in the tourney.  Also a time in the islands to bond as a team  and having a happy flight home.  Stay healthy, keep working and growing.  Finally a team with some depth.
Go REVS!!!

GW0509, this board is in your hands, its gone on for 10 years in a row, WILL THERE be ANY ramifications for hundreds and hundreds of personal insults? How about this statement of FACT in the form of a question: The coward hiding behind fake names using fake personas to attack GW and the few fans left here, will there EVER be any ramification for this or "See nothing Hear nothing" Administration of the one and only site for GW fans?

Hundreds and hundreds of fake, phony, nonsense goes on with a Green Light?  TEN years in a row? 30 year really will there be any Administration of the site?  its the height of Cowardice,  using fake names and phony personas, to do this for a decade in a row and the 20 years before that on the prior sites. That might be insulting a fake persona to call it cowardly but it IS, its a reality so if there's a better word than phony or coward, feel free to suggest one.  The persona isn't real so I am sure the persona will get over the word!

WHY are we the few fans here allowing this to go on?  You have a few comments here and there trying to say something but basically back to Back Admins who have with all due respect done zero to Admin the site from this its only gone on... 30 years in a row

Put an end to end it or put the Board in the hands of someone who will finally stop it. How about that as a solution

Here's 1 more Fact ....relevant to the current moment:

For 2 weeks in March 2022 this "person" posted a dozen of attacks on Chris Caputo (simply because I was recommending a friend who I had knowledge was getting the job as they rode on in the March Madness of 2022 Elite 8 run) and then the day after GW hires Chris, the person who attacked him (and me) dozens of time claimed HE was a persoanal friend of Chris and loves the hire and he's a close insider confidante of Chris Caputo LMAO the open Fraud of the whole thing I guess its some whatever..   - a total fraud clown persona, with a dozen of other fake names singing the praises of the personas LMFAO Wow what a legacy of 30 years of wasted drivel

One more FACT: this same "Insider/ self described board Jackass" 1-2 punch was revealed 20 years ago to be the same PERSON with the SAME IP AND ISP servers by Herve the 20 year long Admin of the GW Hoops site.  SO ....there's that FACT too. SAME guy: Mailvan/Blue Seats, The MV and Bo Knows, GW Rising and GW Mayhem, same guy posting minures apart from each other for 30 years who could ever have seen that one!!!

The actual TROLL was revealed 20 years ago having hundreds of back and forth phony arguments with himself and other cooked up names LMFAO and as Squid says, it was simply an innocent mistake of two Illinois schools, I'd say SUE me "Mayhem (name #7 over the years alone why's that bub?"  but that "Semi-Retired" lawyer doing this can't practice law and has spent 10 hours a day running through fake personas on a site with barely anyone on it for 30 years.  Priorities!

Not a false word here, it all happened and its denigrated the one and only GW fan site for 30 years in a row,  Seriously, please so something. BGF with all due respect let it go on 5 years in a row, why? So far with due respect the New Admin seems totally fine with it too??

Way to go and lets end the "Fan Suffering" GO GW how about a site that resembles the fans and not a dozen phony personas pushing one bizarro agenda and thousands of ad hominem attacks every year? 0509 is that really the GW fan site we want for the fans???

Sorry to have opened this can of worms, but I am also pretty tired of the ad hominems. The Dude started another game thread with a short post, people complained that the Dude posts too much, but then some other poster started another game thread with a similar short post, no comment. I don't understand the opposition here.

Just be nice folks. If you don't like what a poster says, just move on. This isn't twitter.

Example, folks complaining about the Dude starting a game thread https://gwhoops.boardhost.com/viewtopic.php?id=2202
Even shorter game thread by another poster, no complaints https://gwhoops.boardhost.com/viewtopic.php?id=2206

How many wins in conference would we consider a success for this season?

I would be happy with one 10 wins, with at least one over st joes/loyola/vcu/dayton and no blowout losses.

Just ignore him and move on then. Honestly.

Same issue I posted earlier about the two threads. One poster, people get mad, another poster doing the same thing, no one cares. Just move on.

I couldn't care less about who hates who for what reason. Just keep it civil.

10 is about what I would be happy with too, though I think "success" is a little different and would be more than 10, maybe like 11-12, and agree that some should be wins against the top teams. Always enjoy beating Dayton and VCU.

GW0509.    As other administrators have told hm before, please tell  the moronic idiot that I  have never posted under any other name and that I
rarely  dignify his inane posts with a response.  I have tried to tell him this in private messages to no avail He absolutely is a troll as so much of what he posts is repetitive and for no purpose other than to piss people off.      Frankly, I am getting tired of his oh so clever references to me to the extent  that I am almost to the point where he goes or I go. I know this post will likely be erased, as it probably should, but I needed to get this off my chest.
