Opponent Summary: The A10 season starts in earnest this weekend as GW travels to Philadelphia to take on the La Salle Explorers in A10 conference play. In La Salle’s lone A10 encounter within their OOC schedule earlier this season, the Explorers defeated Loyola Chicago and enters this contest at 1-0 in A10 play.  Among their 5 victories in the OOC, La Salle defeated Delaware and American University, two teams that GW has also beat this season. La Salle also suffered big losses to UVA and nationally ranked Texas. La Salle is led by guard Ashleigh O’Connor who comes into the contest with 11.8 ppg and 5.4 rpg averages. Aryss Macktoon follows with 10.1 ppg and 4.9 rpg. The Explorer front court features 6’1” Ayisse Magassa (8.2 ppg and 3.9 rpg) and Fairfield transfer Daleba Mckenzie (6.3 ppg and 5 rpg). As a team, La Salle has averaged 60.6 ppg, while allowing 66.4 ppg to their opponents. They shoot 36.5% from the field (25.4.% from beyond the arc), and have an assist-to-turnover ratio of .8.

About the game: This looks to be an evenly matched contest between two teams projected to finish in the bottom half of the A10. The records are comparable, but La Salle has played a tougher OOC schedule, and during the McCombs era, GW has not fared well on the road, winning less than 30% of their games away from the Smith Center. La Salle does not have an explosive player, and like GW, will rely on a balanced scoring attack. They have not been particularly effective from long range, but manage to attempt 18 3-pointers a game (GW takes 16 per game). Joan Quinn and Jolene Armendariz have taken 43% of the Explorers’ long-range attempts so far this year, hitting on just 26% of them. For the Revs, given the recent success of the front court offensively, GW should continue to focus on their inside game and limit taking 3-point shots. Also, taking care of the ball and limiting turnovers is of paramount importance for this game, as giving La Salle easy scores on turnovers could be a difference maker.

The OOC has ended and because of injuries or illness, GW has not established a core rotation. On the other hand, the coaching staff has had the opportunity to take extended looks at a lot of players. And despite the youth on the GW squad, this looks to be one of the deepest teams in recent years. 11 of 13 players have started a game this season, and 10 of those 11 have started on multiple occasions. As far as the pair that has not started, both Loving and Parnell have had positive production coming off the bench in meaningful game situations. Having a complete roster of players able to contribute is a good thing for GW, but the down side is that injuries have hampered the players’ ability to develop chemistry, especially on the offensive side. The more athletic players (Calisto, Matthews, Parnell, Lewis, etc.) are still gaining experience and developing their skills, while the players who are fundamentally sound (Mott, Planes Fortuny, Andrews, Reynolds, etc.) need an offensive system to maximize their strengths. Unfortunately, the final rotations and offensive schemes are works in progress.

Depending on the status of player availability, this initial game may not tell us much about the potential for this team, but it would be nice to have a W in A10 conference play going into 2025.

Re: GW versus LaSalle University Game Thread

LaSalle must be really bad, or GW was hiding something through it’s OOC schedule

Re: GW versus LaSalle University Game Thread

Final Result: GW runs out to big lead and hangs on to beat La Salle 65-54.

GW starting 5 – Andrews, Engel, Lewis, Matthews, and Mott. The game started with the teams going back and forth early and getting inside scores. Sloppy play by both teams slowed things down, but a pair of 3-pointers helped GW take a 14-11 lead with 2:12 to play in the 1st quarter. GW increased the lead to 20-15 in the waning minutes to close out the quarter.  In the 2nd quarter, both teams were scoreless the first 3 minutes, but a 5-0 GW run forced a La Salle timeout with 6:38 to go. The final minutes of the half were typified by ineffective play on both sides, but GW was able to go into the break with a 33-22 lead. Reynolds had very productive bench minutes and finished the half with 10 points. Lewis followed with 8 points. Conner led the Explorers with 9 points. To start the 3rd quarter, La Salle came out fast and scored the first 5 points before the GW defense settled in to help reclaim and extend the lead to 45-31 with 4:40 to go in the period. After the media timeout, Mott continued to punish the Explorers on the inside and the 3rd quarter ended with GW leading 55-37.  Despite some questionable officiating in the 4th quarter, GW was able to match La Salle’s offense and still led 63-46 with 4:47 left in the game. The final 4 minutes were very shaky for GW as they had trouble scoring, but La Salle was unable to capitalize and GW prevailed 65-54. Mott had a huge game for GW with 18 points, 10 boards, 4 dimes, and 3 blocks. Andrews and Reynolds also finished in double figures with 14 and 12 points respectively. Connor led La Salle with 12 points, while Anna Przyszlak and Ty'Renisha Bowers chipped in 10 points each.

The GW offense was working well at times, and not so much during others. GW had several really good sequences, most featuring successful inside feeds to Mott, and netted 19 assists on 26 made baskets. In the latter stages of the game, with just minimal pressure being put on by the Explorer defense, GW rushed things and took some bad shots, preventing them from increasing the lead. Although GW had 17 turnovers, many came from hurried passes to the inside that were not immediately turned into transition offense by the Explorers. GW’s defense was able to hold La Salle to 30% shooting from the field and held an 11-rebound edge, but La Salle is a young team with major deficiencies on offense. Both teams have struggled from distance this year, but thanks to Mott’s outstanding performance, GW was able to secure a 44-24 scoring edge in the paint. It appeared that Diala, Calisto, Planes Fortuny, and Sims were not available today, but the other players stepped up and did what they had to in order to win. The depth of the GW squad was certainly helpful today.

Chicago Loyola visits Smith Center next weekend, so GW has a week to prepare the healthy players for the upcoming contest, another winnable game.

Re: GW versus LaSalle University Game Thread

Only just got around to catching the game. You could probably make the case that this was the most complete performance the team has had on both sides of the ball all season. Making shots helps a lot, but it seems like Mott may be the solution moving forward. Not only as a scorer, but she seems to be pretty good as a passer finding players cutting off the ball at times as well. That may also help reduce some turnovers from the guards, although passing to the post is a work in progress. Games against the bottom half of the A10 remain winnable. Overall, nice to see a good performance from WBB.
