GW @ St. Bonaventure Game (1)

GW takes on St. Bonaventure as the real A10 season gets under way. The Wednesday afternoon contest pits the Bonnies, who were projected to finish last in the A10, against the streaking Revs. Both teams have over performed in the OOC, with St. Bonaventure coming into the game at a surprising 9-4 and GW posting a 9-5 record on the heels of their current 7-game winning streak. Both the Bonnies and Revs have losses to Howard, the only common opponent between the two teams. St. Bonaventure also lost their only A10 contest to St. Louis in November. The Bonnies are led by guards Laycee Drake (16.1 ppg and 6.5 rpg) and Aailiyah Parker (12.6 ppg and 5.7 rpg). The two have combined for over 42% of the team’s scoring and 1/3 of the rebounds. As a team, St. Bonaventure is scoring at a 67.7 ppg clip, while yielding just 59.7 ppg. The two teams will meet again a second time in late February.

In the seven game winning streak, the Revs have played several closely contested games and managed to come out on top. With the level of competition kicked up a notch, GW will have to be more consistent on offense to keep up with the better A10 squads. The Revs did not look sharp offensively in the matchup with Coppin State, but the play of Lewis and Theodorsson helped to overcome a disconnected offense that was exacerbated by needless turnovers and foul trouble. Against the Bonnies, the GW backcourt has to dribble less and take better care of the ball. Offensively, GW will rely on Reynolds, who looks to bounce back from the CSU game, and continued support by committee from the other rotation players, especially Lewis, Sims, and Theodorsson. The defense will have to keep the Drake/Parker duo in check and off the offensive glass. St. Bonaventure has a lot of incentive, as they haven’t beat GW in the last six tries, so going against them on their home court will definitely be a challenge.

After this game , GW stays on the road, with a Saturday contest against La Salle in Philly.

Re: GW @ St. Bonaventure Game (1)

Tough loss at the last second, but as xAC mentioned GW has come out on top on a number of close games so this probably evens things out. Playing at Bonaventure is never easy. There were about five losses of possession from either not securing a rebound or carelessly turning the ball over, which probably would have made the difference. Overall, I like the fight from this team but defensively they will need to cut down on the fouling.

Bona appears much improved this year. I look forward to the rematch at Smith.

Re: GW @ St. Bonaventure Game (1)

Last second shot sinks the Revs as St. Bonaventure takes 54-53 win.

This was a battle of two evenly matched teams. GW started slow out of the gate, and turnovers stifled any kind of offensive rhythm for the Revs. 11 1st half turnovers led to the Bonnies’ 13-2 advantage in points-off-turnovers, but still, the Revs were fortunate to be only trailing 28-26 at the half. The GW bench provided the Revs with an offensive spark-- Theordorsson manufactured 8 points by going inside, and James hit a pair of triples. The Bonnies were led by Drake, who would finish as the game’s leading scorer with 21 points. The second half was a defensive battle, and both teams had trouble scoring, but GW’s late empty possessions gave St. Bonaventure the opportunity for the winner at the 2.1 second mark. Reynolds provided most of the 2nd half scoring, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a 9-25 shooting half that included numerous missed inside shots. That led to a 24-22 advantage for the Bonnies inside the paint, and was the difference in the game. An alert Pettinelli, gathered the ball after Drake fell down, and stepped back for sweet jumper to end the game.

In the 1st half, GW’s offensive miscues let the Bonnies run to some easy scores. The Revs continue to make some unforced and rushed passes that the receivers aren’t ready for and passes into tight windows where the chances of success are low. Good intentions, not so great execution, but something to work on. GW took much better care of the ball in the 2nd half, and neither team capitalized on turnovers, but both defenses stiffened up and the game became a contest of who could make the most tough shot attempts. GW led by six late in the game, but couldn't score and let St. Bonaventure get the last shot off. The bench seems to be getting more comfortable as the season progresses, but now the starters have to get more consistent. It’s clear that that Coach G is not wed to a strict rotation pattern, and is substituting based on the game situation. That’s a good thing.

La Salle, another team that matches up well with GW is up next. On to Philidelphia.
