GW travels to Ohio to meet the Dayton Flyers in the second of two regular season conference matchups. In the A10 opener for both teams, a Revs’ victory, GW turned in their best defensive performance of the year, holding the Flyers to a season-low 42 points. Since that contest, both teams have had similar successes and come into this game with identical overall (11-10) and conference (4-6) records. In their latest outing this past Wednesday, the Flyers outlasted St. Bonaventure 75-71 at the UD Arena. Dayton is led by Nayo Lear, who comes into the game averaging 15.1 ppg. Nicole Stephens is also in double figures at 10 ppg for the season. 6’3” Forward Fatima Ibrahim scores at a 7.7 ppg clip on 58% field goal accuracy, while leading the team with 6.7 rebounds and 2 blocks per game. Dayton has a negative (-1.3) scoring margin, putting up 66.3 ppg, while giving up 67.6 ppg.
Playing in Dayton will be tough. In the first meeting, GW held Lear scoreless for the entire game, but that is unlikely to happen again, as she will want to atone for her poor performance in December. Still, the defense should focus on Lear and pressure her teammates to take on a greater scoring burden. Ibrahim can cause problems in the paint, and Stephens has been the Flyers’ best player in conference play, so the Revs’ defense can’t lose sight of those two. GW’s defense has been their strong point all season and another solid performance is essential. The Rev’s offense is progressing and scoring distribution has been more consistent. Reynolds is the best offensive player, but the Revs have to find a way to get her more shots (she had only 8 attempts against St. Louis). Lewis has been aggressive and getting to the free throw line, but she needs to take and hit more of her short jumpers in the lane. Similarly, Sims has been able to get good looks from beyond the arc, but also needs to mix it up more inside. As far as the other players, Becker who typically scores by racing across the baseline for backdoor passes, has shown that she can hit a jump shot, as well as post up shorter players inside. Wilson has greatly improved on her drives to the basket, and is an occasional outside threat. Like Reynolds, James is able to make shots for herself, but she has backed-rimmed a lot of attempts. A little more arc on her shot could improve her efficiency and that would greatly benefit GW. Theodorsson continues to make key contributions on both ends of the court. Phiri and Dulin have gotten fewer minutes in conference play, but both have integrated well with the starters. Loving and Gonzales, although not big offensive threats, can spell the defense, especially against some of the bigger more physical front court players in the A10. Hopefully, the Revs can keep the improvement going and leave Dayton with a win.
After this game, another tough road contest awaits at Davidson.

GW pulls away in 4th quarter for 66-54 victory over Dayton.
Things didn’t start off well for GW offensively in the 1st half, but the defense was solid and kept the Revs in close contact with the Flyers. GW managed only 36.7% shooting in the first half, largely influenced by a 2-11 performance by Reynolds, who despite many good looks, was off on her shots. Theodorsson came off the bench to score 8 important points to help GW secure a 27-26 lead going into halftime. The Flyers used balanced scoring led by Stephens’ 5 points and 4 points each from Madola and Lear to keep the game close. Dayton took over the lead early in the 3rd quarter and stayed ahead until mid-way into the final period. Then, Reynolds came alive and led a GW uprising that finished the game with an 18-2 run that settled the outcome. During the run, Reynolds was 3-3 from the field and 4-6 from the free throw line, while Lewis and Sims also contributed timely scores for the Revs. Reynolds finished the game with 17 points and Sims added 12 points to lead the way for GW. Stephens paced Dayton with 15 points, with Lear chipping in 13 points.
This was an important win, moving the 5-6 Revs up to a 7th place tie in the conference. It was also GW’s first win at Dayton since the 2015-16 season. Once again, a total team effort helped GW withstand some early adversity, and despite how close the game was for the majority of the time, GW dominated most aspects of the game. The Revs out-shot Dayton 44% to 38%, out-rebounded them 39-31, and a 22-8 scoring advantage off the bench, a 16-5 edge in points off turnovers, and a 34-24 edge in points-in-the-paint. Wilson had 12 points off the bench that included a pair of triples at critical junctures of the 2nd half. Theodorsson finished with 10 points and 6 rebounds, but was especially effective in the 1st half when the other Revs were struggling. And James, who had 5 points and 6 rebounds, was hustling all over the court, as was Becker, who added 4 boards and a steal.
A big game at Davidson looms ahead. At 7-4 in A10 play, the Wildcats sit alone in 4th place in the A10.

Looks like the women have all the grit. Maybe they can share a little with the men?
