GW takes on the Saint Joseph’s Hawks in a late morning (11:00 AM ET) “School Day” clash on Wednesday in Philadelphia. This will be an important game for both teams, as each is looking to optimize their seeding in the A10 tournament. After taking a home loss on Saturday to Dayton, the Hawks sit alone in 6th place in the A10, and enter this contest at 6-6 in conference play. Their 9-2 OOC record includes wins over Cincinnati, Maine, and Penn, with losses to Penn State and Villanova. St. Joe’s is led by a trio of guards who average double-digits in scoring. Gabby Casey is having a stellar year, leading the Hawks in scoring, rebounding, and playmaking (16.7 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 3.1 apg). Aleah Snead (11.0 ppg, 3 apg), and Rhian Stokes (10.0 ppg) are the other main contributors. As a team, the Hawks rank 4th in the A10 in scoring at 67.7 ppg, and 2nd in points allowed, at 58 ppg.
Both teams will be looking to get back to winning ways. Despite the loss at Davidson, the Revs continued to show signs of improvement offensively. However, the defense inside the paint continued to show cracks. Although GW held Davidson in check from beyond the arc, the interior defense yielded a 10 point (40-30) advantage on points-in-the-paint to the Wildcats, which was the margin of victory. Like Davidson, St. Joe’s has relied heavily on their perimeter game, attempting 3-pointers on almost 40% of their shots. GW’s defense will try to limit the 3-point attempts, but they have to do a better job on the inside to make this a competitive game. Casey provides a dilemma for the GW defense. 50% of Casey’s shots attempts have come from beyond the arc (she hits on 38.4% of them), but she’s also extremely effective inside, hitting on 57% on her two-point attempts. Containing her will be key. For GW, Lewis is gradually becoming one of the better two-way players in the A10. She has to continue to be aggressive attacking the basket, but limit her fouling. Reynolds has also become a reliable scorer, but the Revs’ 1-2 punch, although productive, needs more consistent scoring support from the other starters and bench players. With really tough competition coming in the final 5 regular season games, a victory here would be big.
La Salle, who took down the Revs earlier this season, visits the Smith Center this weekend for a rematch.

Good effort. St. Joe's always seemed to make a big three when they needed it.
Need to continue to work on not fouling on defense and taking care of the ball. Not having Sara out there for much of the second half hurt. Jaeda seems to be breaking out down the stretch. Really good play from her today.

Saint Joseph’s outlasts GW to take 70-63 win in Philly.
GW started out well and went ahead early, but GW’s foul trouble gave the Hawks life, and they were able to take a 31-29 lead into the locker room at halftime. Both Lewis and Reynolds picked up 2 early fouls, causing them to miss a combined 22 minutes in the half. Still, GW was able to outplay the Hawks, holding them to just 32% shooting from the field, The Hawks made up for it with 20 trips to the free throw line, where they canned 14 of them. For GW, Wilson’s timely offense ( 9 points in the 1st half), helped to keep the game close at that point. Stokes led St. Joe’s with 11 points aided by 7 made free throws. After halftime, the game remained close until the final five minutes. Casey, who been held in check up to this point, was able to break free of the Revs’ defense on several occasions, and each time she made GW pay. She finished the game with 15 points, even with Snead and a point shy of Stoke’s 16 points. Wilson finished the game strong for GW to lead all scorers with 20 points, while Reynolds tallied 15 points.
This was a winnable game for GW, but having two top scorers sitting out so many minutes was pivotal. Especially Lewis in critical moments of the 4th quarter, when her defense could have made an impact. On the positive side, Wilson was able to demonstrate her offensive skills, and if she can continue to play under control and contribute to the scoring, she’ll be a big asset to the Revs down the stretch. Another positive sign was seeing James’ shots starting to drop. Her scoring was also key in the first half while Lewis and Reynolds sat on the bench. As an aside, it was puzzling to see Phiri enter the game for literally one minute, only to be yanked and not return. Nonetheless, this was a competitive game on the road and the team looks much more cohesive than at the beginning of the year. However, the Revs’ turnover issues persist, and the 19-9 deficit in points-off-turnovers also contributed to the outcome. Careless passing is the culprit and it is magnified when a critical inbound pass is needed. Just some things to be corrected as the process continues.
GW will be looking to atone from their early season loss to La Salle this Saturday, when the Explorers visit for an afternoon rematch.
