This is to the shock of nobody. Maceo probably kicking himself for not having done so earlier. Good for him for getting out of this situation. Hopefully lands in a better situation.
As for Coach Christian, he's probably considering this an early Christmas present from himself.

MG14 and Colonials Not Hippos have it right. It sucks, though is good for Maceo. Guess he gets another year and a half
under the new rules. Vermontn (he was Mazz;s best friend), Butler, etc may be preparing uniforms.
If not the last 2 games, Maceo in his limited time, inspired the comebacks in several games. Didn't he shoot something like 7-7 recently. Unlike some of our newcomers, he played with his heart and his head.
Like Mazz, Toro and others, JC essentially ran him off, if not directly--and he ran some players off directly.
What we have is his own recruits, one of whom is not playing for some reason, and a 1-6 record, with
little to no OOC development for freshmen. In a year when seniors might be eligible for another year, do we have any scholarship seniors left?
JC broke these eggs.
Now he has to take responsibility for the omelet he is cooking up.
Tastes really bad at the moment. We can only hope it improves with age.

I loathe JC for this. Absolutely avoidable. Maceo paid his dues and deserved to be contributing member of this team. He deserved to graduate from GW.

Coaching changes always push guys out. Unfortunate we have to trade a decent player for a (so far) bad coach though. Also unfortunate how the unremarkable loss of an average player could absolutely kill this team, which could use some "senior leadership."

We don't have to guess, do we? JC is quoted saying this exactly.

When I saw this, I thought that Maceo had maybe planned this and intends to graduate this term. Otherwise, he wouldn't be a graduate transfer. I assume he would had to have graduated in order to be eligible immediately, but I'm not up on the transfer rules, especially in the Covid era.
In any event, he's always seemed to be a great kid, so I hope nothing but the best for him.

The release says he will graduate from GW in May. So sounds like he's just leaving the team while staying in school, and will be a grad transfer next year due to the extra year of eligibility given to winter sports athletes.

That only makes it more bizarre and a bigger sign of the dysfunction.
Must be a great locker room.
Coach owns this.

Nothing bizarre. No dysfunction. This was apparently Maceo's decision alone without any push from JC. Disappointing and surprising decision especially midseason but I wish him all the best. Now it's time for GW to move on just like Maceo is moving on. GW needs guys who want to be here, be part of the solution, and can handle the adversity of a 1-6 start. Time for Nelson, Brelsford and Ball to step up to the opportunity. Next man up.

Or guys who play hard enough and scrap for loose balls, reboounds and defensive intensity, so that we don't have a 1-6 start.

Good luck, Maceo. All the best.

Should’ve made it to Senior night. This one is on JC.

Maceo could have made it to Senior Night. Chose not to.

@gwrising - you think Maceo didn’t want to be at GW? Of course he did but he got pushed out - JC didn’t play him!!! Maceo is a senior who has done nothing but been exemplary his entire career. JC inexplicably made him ride the bench after the dude gave his blood, sweat and tears for 3.5 years. By walking, he’s preserving any semblance of dignity that he has left. Get out here with the “GW wants guys who want to be here” nonsense. This program led by JC is a dysfunctional disaster and the worst part of all, there’s no end in sight.

Maceo became a fan favorite during his time in buff and blue. Sad to see him go.
Congrats to him on earning his political science degree, and wishing him nothing but the best. He certainly has a bright future ahead of him both on and off the court.

Clearly a sign of dysfunction on the the team.Timing leads to no other explanation.
Offline
Yeah, the timing of this really bothers me. This is similar to the situation with Mazzula. If the coach doesn't plan on playing these guys, shouldn't he have an idea of that before the season starts and make it clear to them before we are 7 games into a season so they can have a whole season at a new school. This whole season seems completely dysfunctional.
On a positive note, his minutes will likely go to JNJ, which could keep him from transferring next season as well.

If JNJ doesn't follow Maceo out the door in the coming days...maybe
