Re: 2021 Transfer List

How many open scholarships are there for next year?

Re: 2021 Transfer List

Scholarship players for 2021-22

Battle
Paar
Harris
Bishop
Dean
Ball
Brelsford
Brown
Seymour
Moyer (possible)
Lindo
Freeman

So we have one, maybe two if Moyer does not return. Of course, that assumes everyone else returns.

Re: 2021 Transfer List

Wynston Tabbs from BC in the portal. From MD and MoJo offered him pretty early in 2016. Unclear if there is or would be any interest but good scorer with injury history.

Re: 2021 Transfer List

Another local player from a BCS school has transferred, Pittsburgh junior guard Xavier Johnson, he played his high school ball at O'Connell. He's an athletic shooting guard who averaged double digits in all 3 years at Pittsburgh(15.5 as a FR, 11.7-soph, 14.2 this year). He may not necessarily fit a need with Bishop on the team for the next couple of years, but he is a big-time player with local ties, and he's worth a look if he's interested in GW. I'm assuming Maryland and Georgetown would also be interested when you see how productive he was at Pittsburgh.

A local BCS player to keep an eye on is Michigan freshman Terrance Williams, he played at Gonzaga in D.C. He hasn't transferred YET, but he never gets off the bench for Michigan, and Michigan has signed a Duke/Kentucky-like freshman class next year, so  he's already been recruited over. I watched him several times in high school, and he's a forward who can play inside and on the perimeter. He originally committed to Georgetown and backed out when Georgetown had 4 or 5 guys transfer out last season.

Thomas, thank you for providing this information. I feel Coach would easily figure out how to fit Johnson into the rotation so he gets lots of minutes. I feel that is JC's strength.  I am very excited for next season with our core returning (hopefully) and the new great players joining.  I feel the 2021-22 roster will be quite strong and we will be one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the A-10.  Thanks again Thomas.  You always provide great information and evaluations to us and I appreciate you.

Re: 2021 Transfer List

Great info Thomas.  Perhaps JC can convince one of them to come to GW.  He certainly has been able to get transfers to buy into his system on the recruiting trail.

Re: 2021 Transfer List

I really hope JC can pick up a few "qualified" transfers for the future. I would love to get either Johnson or Williams. JC's track record the previous 2 years shows we will lose several players to the transfer market - and that was before the NCAA changed the rules allowing for this revolving door to become even more common.
I have this bad feeling we could lose either Battle or Lindo after this horrible season. BCS teams with certain needs to put the full court pressure on them to come play in their system. As for Bishop, he's got nowhere else to go.
Great find Thomas.

Right now, we have no spots but I anticipate that at least one or two will free up. Don't ask me who because I have no concrete info just a pretty good hunch.

So is your hunch Seymour? Who  would be the second? Go ahead!  This board is full of hunches.

Re: 2021 Transfer List

Another Pitt player entered the portal today, Au’diese Toney.  He’s a decent glue guy who can score a bit and do a little bit of everything. Might not excel enough any one skill to transfer up, but he still could be in demand for teams that have a hole on the wing.

He feels to me like the kind of player who would fit nicely at gw  and excel here (on the court - I know nothing about how any transfers fit the team/school’s culture).

Re: 2021 Transfer List

I believe the proposed rule is that seniors will not count against scholarship limits next year unless they decide to transfer to another team. I think most seniors (Matt included) are probably going to opt not to come back anyways, but regardless I think we have one spot open right now (assuming Tafara is still only arriving in 2022).

Tabbs has not been a particularly strong defender when healthy at BC, although he can certainly put points up on the board. The former concerns me given our struggles in recent seasons. Xavier is the better player, but both will definitely have plenty of options to choose from.

I am not sure this team needs more alphas like Johnson and Tabbs though. The last thing we need is more clashing that results in further transfers midseason. One of the biggest things we have been lacking in recent seasons is roster continuity (which has certainly impacted performance), and I am hopeful that next season we may finally have some of that.

Re: 2021 Transfer List

Thought it would make sense to start a tracker back up now that we have some spots open. I don't think the staff needs to necessarily rush because there will be a ton of names and skill available this offseason. I think most years we will be able to snag some guys on the way down from Maryland and Virginia as we continue to market ourselves as the local program.

Targets currently within portal:

Myron Gordon PG (Samford, Bordentown, NJ) **1 year to play**
Stats: 10 GP, 25 mpg; 15.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.7 apg; 47% FG, 32% 3-pt, 75% FT
Heard from: Alabama A&M, Arkansas State, Bethune-Cookman, Bowling Green, Bryant, Georgia, Loyola Chicago, Murray State, Niagara, NJIT, Saint Peter's, San Diego, Siena, Temple, Towson, Troy, UAB, UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina

I believe Gordon missed some time with injury this season, but he was Samford's leading scorer and has the ability to score all over the floor. I don't know about fit, but he could play off the ball given his scoring prowess.

Rich Kelly PG (Boston College; Shelton, CT) **1 year to play**
Stats: 16 GP, 25.4 mpg; 11 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 2.4 apg; 43% FG, 37% 3-pt, 82% FT
Heard from: BYU, Florida International, Georgia State, Ohio State, Santa Clara, Tulane, Wake Forest

We were on Kelly's radar last offseason but he ultimately decided to stay closer to home at BC. With their coach canned, his name is back in the portal and he certainly has proven experience playing at the highest level of CBB.

Jake Boggs SG (UNC Wilmington; Charlotte, NC) **3 years to play**
Stats: 17 GP, 25.6 mpg; 10.3 ppg, 3.9 rpg; 47% FG, 44% 3-pt, 76% FT
Heard from: American, Brown, Bryant, Chattanooga, Colgate, Florida International, Holy Cross, Kent State, Loyola Chicago, Montana State, Mount St. Mary's, Nicholls State, Rice, Towson, Tulsa

Boggs has pretty good shooting stats, and at 6-7 he could play multiple positions and perhaps get us to a place defensively where we can switch 2-4 with versatile wings.

Bryan Knapp SG (Cornell; Washington, DC) **1 year to play**
Stats: 27 GP, 26.8 mpg; 7.1 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.4 apg; 43% FG, 43% 3-pt, 78% FT (2019-20 season)
Heard from: High Point, Loyola (MD), San Diego

Knapp would replace Seymour's role as a three point specialist, although he also adds athleticism and offensive versatility apart from just shooting the ball. His defense isn't exactly strong, but he fits the profile otherwise and attended Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School just north of town. I think some Ivy guys are going to slip through the cracks as people forget that they sat out this past season due to COVID.

Ira Lee PF (Arizona; Los Angeles, CA) **1 year to play**
Stats: 23 GP, 10 mpg; 3 ppg, 3 rpg; 55% FG, 74% FT
Heard from: Bryant, Cal St. Fullerton, Chattanooga, Florida International, McNeese State, Montana, Montana State, Murray State, Nicholls State, Pepperdine, Rice, South Carolina State, Southern Illinois, UC Riverside, UT Arlington

Lee can fill in a big hole in the frontcourt, and is pretty talented, arriving in Tucson as a four star prospect. His versatility up front alone would be a step up. He was playing behind a number of other guys.

Cam Martin PF (D2 Missouri Southern; Yukon, OK) **1 year to play**
Stats: 23 GP, 35 mpg; 25 ppg, 9.1 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.2 spg, 1 bpg; 58% FG, 45% 3-pt, 74% FT
28 GP, 9.8 mpg; 4.1 ppg, 2.6 rpg; 51% FG, 42% 3-pt, 62% FT at Jacksonville State.
Heard from: Akron, Alabama A&M, Appalachian State, Austin Peay, Bradley, Bryant, Chattanooga, Colorado State, Drake, East Carolina, Eastern Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, Grambling State, Green Bay, Illinois State, Indiana State, IUPUI, Kent State, Lamar, Liberty, Marshall, Milwaukee, Missouri State, Morehead State, Murray State, North Alabama, North Texas, Northern Arizona, Northern Kentucky, Northwestern State, Oklahoma State, Portland, Robert Morris, Santa Clara, Siena, South Alabama, South Carolina, South Carolina State, Southeast Missouri State, Southern Illinois, SIU Edwardsville, Stephen F. Austin, Stetson, The Citadel, Towson, Troy, Tulsa, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, UIC, UNC Greensboro, UT Arlington, Utah State, Utah Valley, UTEP, VCU, Weber State, Western Carolina, Youngstown State

This feels like a stretch, given Martin has already heard from over 50 D1 programs, but he does have D1 experience at Jacksonville State and is a three level scorer.

Other names to monitor (not currently in portal):

Marcus Dockery PG (Maryland; Washington, DC) **4 years to play**
Stats: 12 GP, 4.1 mpg; 1.6 ppg; 78% FG, 60% 3-pt, 40% FT

We offered him out of high school, and he hasn't really left the bench at Maryland (sounds familiar...). Dockery is a good shooter and play-maker.

Jay Heath, Jr. PG (Boston College; Washington, DC) **3 years to play**
Stats: 19 GP, 33.8 mpg; 14.5 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 1.8 apg; 41% FG, 35% 3-pt, 78% FT

If Heath does decide to leave Boston College, he may be trying to land at an equivalent level of competition, but he attended Woodrow Wilson in DC and perhaps Ricky can help out in the pitch.

Casey Morsell PG (Virginia; Fort Washington, MD) **3 years to play**
Stats: 21 GP, 15.4 mpg; 4.5 ppg, 1.3 rpg; 39% FG, 25% 3-pt, 64% FT

Morsell has a ton of potential, and like others on here he hasn't had the chance to fully realize his potential. We offered him out of high school.

Don't read into this too much but it at least shows some level of interest . Watching twitter
Myron Gordon - just followed by Eric Atkins
Cam Martin - just followed by JC

Great list dmvpiranha, I always focus on local players at BCS schools, so I'll comment on Casey Morsell, Marcus Dockery, and Jay Heath. Boston College's season ended yesterday(with a 35 point loss to Duke), so Heath could announce his decision to transfer at literally any moment now. He would probably transfer up to a better BCS school since he's put up pretty good numbers at BC, he was actually teammates with Lindo for a year at Wilson maybe he has a good friendship with Lindo as dmvpiranha pointed out.

Casey Morsell is the guy I would like the most because of his athleticism and ability to get to the basket. He's listed as a point guard, but he played shooting guard/off the ball most of the time in high school at St.John's and AAU ball. He'd also be a realistic target for GW since he hasn't played much at Virginia

Marcus Dockery would also be a realistic get for GW, I believe his game is similar to Bishop meaning a shoot first point guard. Maryland had high expectations for him coming into the season and he barely gets off the bench, but part of that may have been due to the guards ahead of him(Ayala and Hart) playing very well this year. He may have been teammates with Brayon Freeman at O'Connell at some point.

Re: 2021 Transfer List

Thomas -

Yes Dockery and Freeman were teammates at O'Connell.

I would caution on this list. There are a lot of local names not yet "public" because they haven't yet entered the portal. But there are whispers out there to see who might be interested if a move was made.

Ironically, this might be a very good year to be looking for some immediate impact transfers and have playing time to offer.
