Re: GW vs Rhode Island Game Thread

Despite being roster limited with so few players, seeing Lindo, Bishop, and Battle together for the first time gives me tons of optimism.  For the first time, it felt like everybody played within their comfort zone.  Passing was crisp, shots were generally optimal, and they played like a team.

Fantastic!

Re: GW vs Rhode Island Game Thread

Couple of things jump out at me beyond the obvious (meaning Battle and Bishop scoring)  In no particular order:

1.   Assist/turnover ratio of 18-9.   (whenever you have a 2-1 ratio, it is fabulous)
2.   Way to go Brandon Leftwich.   Not sure what he was doing in the game with under a minute to play, but with the outcome not yet secured, he went 2-2 from the line.
3.    Noel Brown a competent 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in 20 minutes.   Interesting also that Brown and Dean each played 20 minutes.
4.    On the not so good side, Ball and Brelsford shoot a combined 1-10, many of them being wide opened looks.
5.    38 minutes each for Bishop and Battle.   Not sure that is sustainable over a stretch of 3 games in a week.
6.   A sneaky double/double for Ricky Lindo at 11 points and 10 rebounds.   Throw in 4 assists and 3 steals and you have a solid if not spectacular game.

About the standings, they mentioned that winning % will determine the seeds in the A-10 tournament, so GW is now in 10th place(avoids the play-in round) at 3-3 with the win, Rhode Island drops to 11th at 7-9. George Mason and Duquesne are both 6-6, GW has a shot to finish ahead of them in 8th place. I'm assuming the A-10 will schedule a George Mason-GW game because of the rivalry

GW is more or less locked into the 12 seed for the A10 tournament. Standings based seeding is if you played 60% of average number of conference games (which will probably come out to around 11-12 which GW will not reach). Otherwise its based on NET, where GW is 12th, so unless they can jump 50 spots this week (they were 57 behind 11th La Salle before todays game) they are locked into 12. They can avoid opening round if they somehow jump up 130 spots over 10th Mason but that is not likely.

Re: GW vs Rhode Island Game Thread

Noel Brown looks like he has slimmed down. It seems like he is getting the message that you don't have to put up a prayer after every offensive board. The answer is find Battle.

Re: GW vs Rhode Island Game Thread

Really excellent and unexpected win after such a long layoff. Bishop, Battle, and Lindo are a really good trio - basically willed us to the win today.

I have no doubt that they are good enough to be top guys on a top 100 or NCAA tourney team. Just need some more talent around them.

Was also really impressed with Noel today.  His passing is a great sign for his future.  He’s not an explosive leaped, but he’s starting to settle into what he can and can’t do.

It’s nice to have games again.  Let’s keep it going.

Always some nice Schadenfreud in a meltdown from opposing teams’ fans.  I do think opposing fans probably don’t realize yet how much of a difference maker Lindo is, or they this was the first game with our big 3 all healthy and playing together.

Looking forward to watching kids who haven’t played in a month play a meaningless game without the full roster in which they lose by a lot.

Not sure that prediction worked out so well lol.

Re: GW vs Rhode Island Game Thread

Extremely proud of these kids and coaches - they had every built-in excuse in the book to lose this game and they came ready to compete for 40 minutes. I am happy for them all as it's been a very rough 5 weeks. Often the force of will is the great intangible in sports. You saw another example of that today.

Re: GW vs Rhode Island Game Thread

Good for the team and Jamion for rising to the occasion and sticking it to all the naysayers. Rhode Island probably wins if that kid Mitchell didn’t miss what seemed like 25 layups!!!!! But still, a good game after such a long layoff and they showed something coming back  and finishing it strong.

And just for old times sake.......#FuckDanHurley.

David Cox did look like he found a SW tar house and snorted some lightbulb glazing before the game.

Re: GW vs Rhode Island Game Thread

Don't want to wallow in another team's misery usually, since we've had plenty. But LSF and FQ are right.
With their mocking of Yuta and arrogance over their team's ability (Hurley may be gone, but punk attitude isn't),good to see Rhode fans twist in the wind.
And they are certainly a lot more vocal about their coach than we usually are.
Good team spirit for us. Let's keep it going

Dont forget, Lindo was teammates with both Mitchells last year.  Nice bragging rights for him to get the win.

Re: GW vs Rhode Island Game Thread

Reading the meltdown from the Rhode Island fans on their message board was hilarious, it started with overconfidence before the game to "GW May Have a Better Roster In The Future than We Do" and Fire Dave Cox!!

The Mitchell twins also attended Wilson high school like Lindo, but I think they came in the year after Lindo graduated. The fact that Rhode Island has all these local ties(Leggett and Harris are also from the D.C.area) had to make the loss even more painful for them.

GW18,  I'm guessing winning percentage is being used because they want to help St.Louis' at large chances. St.Louis has played 7 conference games(they are 4-3) and will not reach the 11 or 12 game minimum. We know the A10 doesn't care where GW finishes, but they probably want STL to finish in the top 4 or 5.
