Re: Recruiting for 2021-22 Team.. Transfers and HS recruit news

Would love this. Best shooter/offensive rating in the country. I think he was over 50% from distance.

jake lieberman @jakelieberman2 11m
Colgate transfer Jack Ferguson (@jack_n_f) tells me that George Washington, Montana, Pepperdine, Vermont, and Indiana State are showing interest in him. Ferguson is a lights out shooter and averaged 12.5 PPG this season. He played with a lot of confidence against Arkansas.

In addition, would also love to pick up a player like Joe Bamisile from Virginia Tech or Greg Gantt from Providence. I think Gantt was looking to go closer to home in the Carolinas. Morsell would be awesome too but I suspect schools like Georgetown would be reaching out.

One of biggest issues last season was post defense and interior rebounding especially when Moyer went down. Lee is a load in the post. Why wouldn't you be excited about him? He makes us better! But there are others in the pipeline. Let's look at the whole picture. I think you will be excited then. More to come.

I may very well be excited when all is said and done.  I hope so!  The reason I am not excited about this signing is largely because I don’t think a one year player does much for this team long term, and I don’t think (as of now) next year’s team will be very competitive.  A grad transfer certainly provides benefit to a team and to players.  But this isn’t mo creek who will fill in a gap to make a team go from non-competitive to competitive.  I know we disagree here, and that’s ok.  But a grad transfer on a bad team does not help me feel like long term goals will be achieved.  With other signings and a fuller picture, my opinion very wel may change.  I don’t have that fuller picture yet, and can only go with what I actually know.

Re: Recruiting for 2021-22 Team.. Transfers and HS recruit news

Most BCS players who transfer to GW are going to have a similar stat line to Ira Lee so that shouldn't be much of a concern. He's probably going to get starter minutes at GW and show the top 100 ability we see in his high school videos and in spurts at Arizona.

An interesting name showed up on the transfer list...KRIS Monroe!! He transferred from Providence to North Carolina Central, which has been a MEAC power, we may see him in the NCAA tournament at some point. GW should have made an effort to recruit him both times just because of his name. Imagine having two Chris/Kris Monroe's who played at GW! LOL

I agree it is not a direct line to continued success; however don’t dismiss what damage a terrible less than 10 win team can do to a program.

Agree.  This isn’t a bad thing.  Having a guy help a team get wins is not bad.  It’s just not particularly exciting in this fashion.  Connection to big programs, mentorship and hopefully better play is good for the program, of course.  My lack of excitement should not be taken as a negative

Danjsport, a one year player could easily help the program in the long term if he contributes towards helping to turn the team around in the short term.  In fact, this may be preferable in that a talented high school prospect sees not only the team turning a corner but also a more realistic opportunity at playing time right away since Lee will be gone by the time he enrolls.

That would be a massive get and even pass the DanJ excitement test.

Bamisile is a big, physical guard who was a top 100 recruit and seems to be a fan favorite of Hokies fans. They were bummed he transferredbecause they thought he had a big future there.

There are a couple of reasons why we might be a great choice for him and why this FC guess might be right.

First, he originally committed to Northwestern before deciding he wanted to stay closer to home.  He’s from Richmond, so GW would still keep him relatively close to home.

Second, he explicitly said that the reason he was transferring is that he wanted to go to a place where he is wanted and needed, and where he can get a lot more playing time.  Obviously he’d be an immediate starter for GW - likely a 3 year starter if he stayed.

The third thing is that from what I can tell, Bamisile appears to be a positive energy guy and well liked.  Ira Lee fits that bill, too.  Obviously with all the love talk, JC wants to fill the team with positive energy guys if he can - so from what I can tell, Bamisile would fit the culture JC is trying to build, along with Lee.

Would he cool if it happens, but a guy who was top 100 and had offers from places like Florida and Georgia Tech, has plenty of options.

Re: Recruiting for 2021-22 Team.. Transfers and HS recruit news

Let the annual "GW hype" begin.

"massive get" on a guy who played a total of 118 minutes last season!

Most of us will only get excited once we see the performance on the court and against decent teams (not Howard, Navy Towson, etc).

We are about to have over 1000 in the transfer portal. There's got to be an Zeke Armwood, Mo Creek or Tyler Cavanaugh in this group.

Re: Recruiting for 2021-22 Team.. Transfers and HS recruit news

Don't judge transfers from a BCS school  purely by their stats, Obviously the player is transferring because he didn't get time or didnt like the situation going forward.

For reference
Mo Creek averaged 1.8 pts in his last year at Indiana. I seem to remember him working out
Isaiah Armwood averaged 2.5 .. He also worked out just fine

Would  take those guys again

Re: Recruiting for 2021-22 Team.. Transfers and HS recruit news

Mo Creek had serious knee issues/surgeries his last 2 years at Indiana which resulted in very limited minutes/scoring.

Zeke transferred late, after Villanova's Summer trip abroad where he was named a team captain and expecting a big increase in minutes entering his junior year.

Both were excellent pieces to an already promising squad of younger talent. Mo was especially a question mark due to his injury history but worked out great as did all the "transfers" from a few years ago.

In order to get back to the top half of the A-10, we need quality recruits who are with us for 4 years and to build a system that works and fits the personnel we have, not a bunch of one and done transfers or transfers who end up transferring again because of the lax NCAA  transfer rules. Not 6-7 transfers a year as a band aid to stop the bleeding.

Otherwise, we will continue to "suck" the next 3 years and have to wait out JC's contract only to begin this process all over again.

Re: Recruiting for 2021-22 Team.. Transfers and HS recruit news

We cant just bring in a class of HS kids at this stage and have the majority of the roster graduate at the same time. We have to add in a grad transfer and players with multiple years left so we stagger the roster.
BTW if a player transfers after this past year being his freshman year, he will have the same eligibility as a HS recruit (this year doesn't count)

I don't know what your point is on Mo and Zeke . I don't see their situation much different than any transfer we are looking at. Either way not work the argument Lets just move forward.

In either case, feel free to look at the glass half empty and I along with others will have hope. No guarantees but we will see.

Re: Recruiting for 2021-22 Team.. Transfers and HS recruit news

Tell Eric Musselman at Arkansas (after success at Nevada) that you can’t build a winning program with lots of transfers.  His success is one fit the reasons other coaches are copying that.

Still need a coach who can mold them into a winning unit, but I’d gladly take a team of Ricky Lindos and Tyler Cavanaughs over a team of Juice Williamses and Lincoln Balls.  I honestly don’t care how we win, just want to see us become good again.

(Plus, let’s not overlook that we already have two highy regarded recruits coming in, in Freeman and Nixon.  I’m especially looking forward to literate announcers making Nixon to Dean jokes).

Edit: Sorry - I got sucked by Joel Joseph into the off-topic conversation.  Attacks on the idea of using transfers to build should be in a different thread.  This one is for news about players or potential players.
