Other Games Thread (12/1 - 12/15/19)

Starting a new thread for the next couple weeks.

Thanks to Thomas for putting together a schedule of games to watch every day. Reposting his last post here:

Georgetown's next game is against undefeated Oklahoma State(who is coming off 2 blowout wins against Syracuse and Ole Miss) in a few days, so things could get even worse for them. Georgetown also had a local top 75 player from Gonzaga commit to them during the summer, but did not sign his LOI during the early signing period, which is also causing their fanbase some angst.

#20 VCU lost 2 close games to Tennessee and Purdue in an OOC tournament. Richmond beat Boston College by 20 yesterday at home. St.Joe's lost by 16 to St.Frances (PA), St.Joe's is starting to play like the team that was projected to finish in last place, but they still have the win over UConn.

Rhode Island at West Virginia     2:00
Maryland Eastern-Shore at Fordham   2   ESPN+
Southern Illinois at St.Louis    4  ESPN+
Temple vs. Davidson   4  ESPN2  - Consolation game in Orlando
La Salle at Villanova   6:30  FS1
St.Bonaventure vs. San Diego  9  - this is part of a tournament in Florida

#5 Maryland vs Marquette  1:00 on ESPN - Championship game in Orlando. Marquette guard Markus Howard has scored 91 Points in the first 2 games of this tournament(51 vs USC and 40 vs Davidson). Maryland has had a lot of trouble stopping guards this year!! Harvard guard Akin had 30 against them two days ago.

Vermont at Yale  3 on ESPN+

Charleston vs UCF  4 on ESPNU - for those of you who want to watch Colin Smith

Oof, not a good weekend for Texas A&M

Fairfield (a team with a 1-6 record) beats Texas A&M 67-62. The Aggies finish in dead last in the Orlando Invitational.

Re: Other Games Thread (12/1 - 12/15/19)

All good Thomas! I forgot until this morning myself with it being the Thanksgiving weekend.

Texas A&M just lost to 1-6 Fairfield. The Stags had only previously won against Holy Cross, another brutal team this year that is rebuilding. I believe one of their players made 10 threes in the game.

I don't doubt that Buzz Williams is probably going to turn over a good part of the Aggies roster and start from scratch. Their point guard TJ Starks already left and by all accounts seemed like a basket case. A&M will probably be competitive again in a few years, but you have to wonder whether it's a better job than the one he left at Virginia Tech. I get the no income tax and being from Texas angle, but I think VT might be a better job long term. Mike Young is doing a good job there all things considered in year 1 after coming over from Wofford.

St.Joe's lost by 23(94-71) at home to Lafayette last night, they've now lost 6 straight games.

South Carolina at UMass   7 on CBS SportsNetwork
VMI at Duquesne  7  ESPN+

Towson at Morgan State   7
Notre Dame at #3 Maryland   7:30  ESPN
Georgetown at Oklahoma State   8  ESPN+  - Despite everything that has gone on with Georgetown over the past few days, it appears as if they are going to move on as if nothing has happened. It looks like the 2 players(Galen Alexander and Myron Gardner) named in the court documents filed by the Georgetown student will play tonight

Re: Other Games Thread (12/1 - 12/15/19)

I thought Maryland was a fraud until I watched them blow out Marquette in the Orlando championship game last Sunday. The way dominated Marquette and totally shut down Markus Howard(I think he was 1-12 from the floor), who had scored 91 points in the first 2 games of the tournament, was impressive. Maryland had been "playing down" to their competition in pretty much all of their games prior to Marquette. Maryland appears to be 2 or 3 deep at every position/skillset (point guard, shooters, shot blockers, rebounders, athletic swingmen, etc.), maybe Maryland really is a Final 4/National Championship contender and will remain in the top 5 for the entire season.

Re: Other Games Thread (12/1 - 12/15/19)

The win over Marquette was very impressive (far more so than the earlier tournament wins over Temple and Harvard) but when it comes to the Turgeon era at Maryland, April is a more interesting time to have a discussion on his accomplishments than December.  4 NCAA appearances in 8 seasons, just 1 Sweet 16  as his best finish in that time frame (equaling the one he had at Wichita State), zero Top 10 finishes to a season, zero Big 10 regular season titles, and zero Big 10 Tournament Championships.   And it's not like attracting talent has been a problem.  He's coached current NBA players (Kevin Huerter, Bruno Fernando, Jake layman, Alex Len), outstanding college players (Melo Trimble, Dez Wells, Robert Carter), a player who was supposed to be dominant but wasn't (Diamond Stone), and at least three current players with legitimate pro aspirations (Jalen Smith, Anthony Cowan, and Aaron Wiggins, not to mention some very talented freshmen.)

Turgeon is in the Lefty mode of far better recruiter than in-game coach.  Maybe he breaks through this year but so far, just about any Terp fan would say he's been a big disappointment.

Re: Other Games Thread (12/1 - 12/15/19)

Gwmayem,  good points!! Turgeon's teams have been notorious underachievers and inconsistent during his 8 seasons. The way Maryland dominated Marquette and their depth had me convinced that this year would be different, but that was just 1 game and Turgeon has coached teams with a number of NBA players/outstanding college players during his tenure who couldn't put together a dominant season. I believe Maryland had 1st half double-digit deficits against George Mason, Rhode Island, Temple and Harvard, so they are very capable of playing poorly for long stretches despite the talent level

Re: Other Games Thread (12/1 - 12/15/19)

Agreed Thomas.

Totally sold on this Maryland's team shot at a deep NCAA run, Turgeon going back to his Wich St Sweet 16, to Texas A&M to Maryland has been just a tremendous winner at every stop. he even Turned around Jacksonville St overnight!
The guy is an incredible turnaround artist and a great Coach, 21 years into his career, he's just 54 now.
A real star of stars in the sport.

Re: Other Games Thread (12/1 - 12/15/19)

In quite possibly the eye opening score of the year, Purdue pounds UVA 69-40.
The incredible Matt Painter rolls on, still somehow in his 40s, what a run at Purdue including 3 straight Sweet 16s and an Elite 8 season323–161 (.667)158–92 (.632)

Hawk Hill is really turning in to the A10´s shitshow of a program. We  know that GW will get better, but is there any reason for optimism at St Joe´s? They have to be looking at JNJr´s play and think "I could have had a V8!"
