This nightmare could improve if Bishop heats up

Re: GW vs Saint Joseph Game Thread

I never enjoy picking on our guys, but has anyone in the history of GW big men been less prepared to receive and catch passes than Hunter Dean?

Re: GW vs Saint Joseph Game Thread

Why do we like unforced turnovers?  Well, the refs were really in control of whistle blowing today. Foul out the whole team.

Re: GW vs Saint Joseph Game Thread

Well, we showed up for 1/2. Imagine if they showed up for the first half.

Re: GW vs Saint Joseph Game Thread

Tired or not how do you get down16-1? Too many crappy starts this season!

Re: GW vs Saint Joseph Game Thread

actually, if we had made more of our free throws, it would have been a totally different game, given our surge in the second half.

Re: GW vs Saint Joseph Game Thread

An afternoon to forget. Can´t blame refs, tiring travel or an opponent with overwhelming talent. This was a poor showing from the opening tip. Sure, the team showed some character by getting a few points away from being a few points away from tying, but basically this is one not worth dwelling on. It is what it is. Who got next?

In terms of being unprepared to receive and catch passes, Noel is right there.

Re: GW vs Saint Joseph Game Thread

GWAA noted it is what is it is.
And would add, they are who they are.
We have moments (think those passes and movement that led to easy Max dunk) and sometimes even games of team play.
But essentially, we are often a two-man show and those two guys can be amazing, but also amazingly off for their skill set. CC recruit Max is really the best as a team player an aggressive, talented rebounder for his position. Next year, he will lead, with a supporting cast that hopefully is much different in terms of team play.
CC was able to do whatever he did to stop the bleeding, avoid a traditional second half opening swoon and make the game close to competitive at time, but he is stuck with the players we have, who often are ruled by several years of everybody doing their own thing.
As noted in by others, we revert to ISO ball. And we have streak shooters, who turn on and off, and we don't always let's say charitably, pay the greatest attention to defense, though we have our moments when there is some desire to do so.
As I noted in an earlier game, we have better players (though the Greer family owns us) and certainly a very, very veteran starting five. Our losses, and even some of our wins, feature the opposition playing better as a team.
But at this point, just interested in avoiding humiliation and a future of better play for a rebuild, what is it, year 8?

Re: GW vs Saint Joseph Game Thread

The energy was not there from the start, which wasn't unexpected. Was wondering when CC was going to take that timeout at the beginning but it feels that with this team they either have it or they don't so he probably felt that it didn't matter which I kinda get.

BA and JB effectively traded places in the game, with JB scoring pretty much all in the first half and BA all in the second. Both need to be on all the time for the team to win.

In addition to the shots not falling, the team operated too much in isolation. When they did pass, they weren't in sync. On top of all of that, the refs decided to whistle the slightest bit of contact made. Whenever that happens, it's advantage other team. We had something like four or five players with two fouls by halftime. I can't think of another team in the league with less depth. By the end of the game, there wasn't a single scholarship player with fewer than two fouls.

Appreciated the fight from the team in the second half (at least it wasn't a repeat of Duquesne) but a 20 point deficit on the road is basically impossible to come back from. The team needs to score to keep up. St. Joe's tried their hardest to keep us in the game, but shots were not falling and the defense is just non-existent. There were times where I wondered whether it's better to just clear out and let them shoot a layup than foul. St. Joe's is awful from the FT line, but this team also cannot afford foul trouble. It's a score for the other team most of the time either way. That's what crossed my mind when Greer drove to the basket late. I could see what was going to happen before the play happened. Hunter was clearly in the restricted area. At that point, just run to the sidelines or something because it's an and-one otherwise.

I thought Ricky and Qwanzi gave good minutes today, especially Q. Lindo gave us some second chance opportunities when nothing was falling early on, and Samuels got to the hoop, rebounded, and actually dove for a loose ball.

Hopefully the team doesn't go on another three game losing streak before the shots fall again. The defense won't be there. Hopefully the offense will. Say a prayer before each game that both JB and BA have a good shooting day and go over 20 points.

Wondering if this is one I should’ve just fast-forwarded through later tonight. LSF must be having a great time.

Thank you for thinking of me Merrick.  Anytime you travel a long distance to watch your team and tthey are down 15-1 before the first media timeout is not going to be a good game experience.  Actually, I had a great time over the weekend except for 2 hours.  Always interesting sitting behind the bench, often within hearing shot.  CC was livid at the refs, and although I am not generally one to blame the refs for our misfortunes, it seems like most of the game was being called onesided.  After one stoppage of play, CC was real aggressive in going after one of the refs and I was somehwat surprised he did not get a techincal.  Every time we made any type of run or had any momentum, it seems like a ticky tack foul would take us right out of our game.   2 of our 5 starters (Lindo and Dean) had to sit with 2 fouls, also before the first time out.   Unfortunately, we don't seem to be able to win a game without Bishop/Adams scoring at least a combined 50 points, and it is simply not reasonable to expect them to do so every game, especially when our third leading scorer (Max) is likewise having an off game.

Three non game related issues to mention.   When I bought our tickets, I used the GW code, thinking I was going to sit in the GW section behind the bench, but we ended up with what had to be the worst seats in the house.  I went to the ticket office to tell them that I traveled a long distance to get to the game and asked if I could get an upgrade, willing to pay for it of course.   Without giving it any thought, they gave me 3 tickets in the 5th row, right behind the GW bench (what I originally thought I would be getting) and did not charge me anything extra.  For that I am grateful to the St. Joes Athletic Department

As for the arena itself, once  you go to a game there, you will be that much more thankkfu for the Smith Center.  I would say that 75%  of the seats were bleachers, the scoreboard was woefully inadequate and it was generally not an aesthetically pleasing environment.  And the band sucked.

Finally, non basketball related, it was fun being in a city the day prior to and the day of its participation  in the Super Bowl.  Everywhere was a party atomosphere, with everyone decked out in Green, especially in The "Live" Casino in the sports complex (where I went 3-0-0, winning on UVA (-2.5) over Duke, the Wizards and the Sixers over the Nets.  Would have won on the Knicks, but I pushed because RJ Barrett drew a technical foul in the final minuts of the game, causing a pust at -6, but that's besides the point).  The skyline of Philly was Green.  There was a huge Eagle banner hanging from the Art Museum.  It is an indescribable excitement that fortunately we here in the DMV only recently experienced with the Nationals.

Re: GW vs Saint Joseph Game Thread

I made my first trip to a GW road game on Saturday. Unlike LSF I kind of liked Hagan Arena. Half the size of the Smith Center with most seats pretty good, though I did find the pricing tiers of $40 and $25 strangely expensive. Hagan Arena could be a really tough place for visitors to play if SJU was good because fans are on top of the court. 2500 fans on top of you is never easy.

That said, the SJU Hawk is by far the worst mascot in sports. Just lame all around.

Re: GW vs Saint Joseph Game Thread

Question and then some comments.

I understand that our mascot, cheerleaders and dance club members do not typically travel to away games until the conference tournament.  Am pretty sure this is true of most of the conference schools with one exception.  The SJU Hawk shows up everywhere, home or away.  Does anyone know why this is?  Can other schools bring their mascots to road games but choose not to do so?

Onto my comments and unfortunately for Tennessee Colonial (TC), they are directed at him.  Am not sure if this is OK with everyone or whether I am the one being difficult here or not, but I really wish TC would either stop posting in realtime during games, or reconsider the manner in which he posts.  He has a tendency to be overly negative in a personal manner which does not sit well with me.  Last game against Richmond, he got so down on JB until of course JB was instrumental in helping GW win that game, in which case he sheepishly wrote, "thank you Mr. Bishop."  Examples from Saturday's game:

Dean and Lindo benched for dumb play
They are giving their fans a nightmare
The love of stupid plays resulting in turnovers
Can't wait to see the team with a bench.  Cap would be able to bench those guys who are brain dead and show no effort.

This is all really uncalled for.  There have to be ways to convey that the team is turning the ball over too much or isn't playing well as a team without resorting to dumb, stupid, or brain dead.  As for effort, we all should have known that fatigue was going to be a huge factor after Wednesday night's game.  Spare me the "but these guys play ball 8 hours a day in the summer" argument.  Playing in front of thousands of people at this high a level requires an inordinate amount of physical and mental toughness.  This would be stressful on anyone let alone 18-23 year old young men.

They don't deserve to receive personal insults because they are not playing well.  I've noticed that this pattern does not present itself with TC's other posts, only during games.  So yes, I'm concluduing that perhaps TC is getting a bit too caught up in the moment and particularly, during the bad moments.  Respectfully, I'm asking TC to tone it down, a lot. There's just no need to hurl insults at these guys, whether this is the intent or not.

I believe it is an agreement between the 2 schools.

Last night i went to the UM-ES @ Howard game and was surprised to see the UM-ES cheerleaders on the court. There was definitely a "degree of antagonism" between the two cheerleading groups. But the UM-ES band was not there.

Many years ago - probably before many of you were born, I was a graduate student at Stanford University. The main rivalry is with UC - Berkeley.  For these basketball games both bands and cheerleaders of both schools participated, but the opposing band was given the worse seats in the arena.

This may be an outgrowth of football game where the visiting team performs pregame, and the home team performs at half-time.

This is definitely more common in football.  I've seen opposing bands travel to road games and be forced to perform from the upper deck.  Hope those seated in neighboring sections receive some kind of discount for their eventual trips to their audiologists.

Back to your original point, it would seem odd that the Hawk always shows up in DC but George doesn't travel to Philadelphia.  Maybe GW does not want to spring for mascot expenses on the road?

I remember the WVU musketeer showing up at many if not all GW home games.

Re: GW vs Saint Joseph Game Thread

BC is right.
Ok, I remembered that stupid mountaineer firing his musket inside our gym. Hopefully, it was the powder
that they use (or presumably used to use as it would definitely not be appropriate today).
But apparently 10 years ago, the mascot actually killed a black bear with his musket, posted it online.
And it even made WVU squeamish, so they banned actual hunting with the gun.
Don't miss the mountaineer or their fans.
There are many stories from teams playing West Virginia about the reception they receive in Morgantown, as well.

Re: GW vs Saint Joseph Game Thread

Did a little digging on this, and at least on past SJU media guides from the Martelli years, they note that the Men's Basketball Hawk (there's one designated for each team) is also a team manager. I imagine the A10 is pretty clear with AD's across the conference that there will be no complaints about this, though I couldn't find evidence of a written policy.
