Final Result: GW coasts to a 91-30 win over Cheyney University.

GW had a makeshift lineup with Innis, Engel, and Sims joining Durant and Taiwo in the starting lineup. It was obvious from the outset that Cheyney was overmatched in size as Durant scored the first 9 points and GW ran out to a 21-3 1st quarter lead. Robertson came off the bench with 2 minutes left in the 1st, and played a facilitator role with a couple of assists in limited minutes. The 2nd quarter saw a lot of new GW faces on the court (12 players logged time for GW), with Sierra-Vargas and Hartman getting their first action of the season. With the help of a 24-0 run that started in the 1st quarter, GW took a 44-10 lead into the the break. At halftime, Durant led all scorers with 11 points, followed by Sim’s 9 points on 3-5 shooting from beyond the arc. Engel caught fire early in the 3rd period with 9 quick points that included a 3-pointer and a couple of midrange jumpers. The reserves continued to do a good job of keeping the Wolves outside and holding them to single shot opportunities. By the end of the quarter, GW’s lead had mushroomed to 74-18. Loving dominated inside to start the 4th, and GW cruised to a 61-point win. Engel led all scorers with 21 points on 7-12 shooting. Loving chipped in a 15/10 double-double, and Durant (13 pts) and Sims (15 pts) also posted double figures. Robertson had 9 points to go along with a career-high 5 assists. Remarkably, despite playing with a lineup of players that haven’t logged many minutes, the Revs were able to hit 23-26 free throws in the game.

Cheyney did not provide the level of competition that GW will face in the coming weeks, but the contest did provide some needed game experience for our players. Hopefully, today's look at the players will give the coaches a better idea about future rotations and with the uncertainty of the availability of core players (Blethen, Brown, Buford and Lok did not suit up today), some of the standouts from today’s game will have to step up. Engel had a good all-around game, and Sims, after throwing up a pair of airballs on her first 3-point attempts, kept on shooting and canned her next 4 in a row. Loving showed that she can be a capable sub for Durant when needed. Will they be able to sustain that level of performance moving forward?  Hopefully, some of those answers will be provided when GW takes to the road next Wednesday to face a experienced and balanced Towson squad.
