Opponent Summary: The LaSalle Explorers visit GW on Valentine’s Day in their only matchup of the regular season. The Explorers come into the game at 7-16 overall and 4-8 in the A10. Their 4 conference victories came against Fordham, St. Bonaventure, and UMASS (twice). After losing Kayla Spruill, all three Jacobs sisters, and Chastity Shears from last year’s squad, La Salle is at the start of a rebuild with a lot of new faces. The most consistent players this season have been Freshman Nicole Melious and Graduate Student Makayla Miller. The backcourt pair is each averaging 10.2 ppg. Jolene Armendariz leads the team in rebounding at 6.0 rpg, and is coming off a 15/10 double-double performance in a closely contested game against Duquesne on Saturday. As a team, the Explorers score 58.6 ppg, shooting 35.5% from the field (27.3% for beyond the arc). They have struggled defensively, allowing 70.8 ppg, resulting in a -12.2 average scoring margin.

About the game: Like GW, La Salle has struggled offensively, but has been able to defeat some of the lower tier teams in the A10. La Salle doesn’t have explosive players, so GW will likely handle them defensively in the half court, but if they continue to throw dumb passes into defended passing lanes and give up easy layups, they could be playing from behind for a considerable stretch of the game. Against Richmond, Lok tried to do too much early and she ended up with a game-high 5 turnovers. At least most resulted from being aggressive on offense. Innis, on the other hand, had 3 turnovers, but all were unforced passes directly to Richmond players. As a team, GW must refrain from taking so many 3-point shots, especially after badly missing numerous wide-open shots against Richmond. The 21/38 mix between 2-point and 3-point shots resulted in a 34% shooting performance.  In the St. Bonaventure win, the 44/18 mix resulted in 43.5% accuracy. Surely the coaches must realize that our players are not great 3-point shooters. Both Brown and Lok have demonstrated a good mix of inside/outside offense and must continue to do so. GW also has to find a way to get the post players more involved offensively to help reduce the team’s dependency on the outside game. Finally, Engel and Marsh were missing in action at Richmond, so hopefully both are healthy and ready to go against La Salle.

This is a timely opportunity for the Revolutionaries with Geroge Mason and Duquesne coming up next. It would be great to be riding some positive momentum going into contests against some stronger A10 opponents.

Re: GW versus La Salle Game Thread

Final Result: GW starts out slow, but heats up to defeat La Salle 71-49.

GW struggled coming out of the gate and a combination of bad shots and missed layups stymied the offense. Luckily, the Explorers were equally inept and after 6 minutes of play, GW led 3-2 after going 1-11 from the field. Thanks to 4 transition baskets spurred on by the defense, GW led 9-5 after a brutal 1st quarter for both teams. Offensive woes continued for both squads to start the second quarter, but baskets started to fall. GW managed to score on the inside, while La Salle hit some 3’s. With GW leading 15-13 after the media timeout, Kamari Sims came up big with a pair of 3-poiners and Robetson’s long buzzer beater staked GW to a 28-16 lead going into the halftime break. Robertson led the Revs with 11 points, followed by 8 points from Sims. Makayla Miller led the Explorers with 7 points. Sloppy GW offense gave the Explorers life and they took advantage to cut the lead to 34-30 early in the 3rd, forcing a GW TO. Order was restored and GW hit two quick threes out of the TO enroute to a 14-2 run to end the period and take a 48-32 lead.  GW maintained control to start the final period, stretching the lead to 55-36 and forcing a La Salle TO at the 6:56 mark. Both teams made mass substitutions at the 4:00 mark as GW coasted to a 71-49 win. Robetson finished with 25 points, with Brown and Lok adding 11 points apiece. Miller led La Salle with 18 points, followed by Melious’ 14 points.

Despite a horrendous 1st quarter, GW finished the game at 40.2% (25-62) from the field, but their 14 turnovers led to 17 La Salle points. La Salle had a few short scoring streaks, but couldn’t consistently get good shots in their halfcourt offense. Sims played some good minutes, subbing for Innis, who got in early foul trouble. 68 of 71 GW points were scored by backcourt players, although many came on inside attempts. Taiwo (0-3), Durant (0-0), Engel (0-1), and Loving (1-1) did little offensively, but Taiwo was great on the boards with 7 offensive rebounds that contributed to 17 second chance points. The Revs were 9-26 from beyond the arc, but missed wide-open 3’s against a porous defense. Robertson can and needs to be more efficient; especially in her shot selection. Engel is playing much like Brown used to, deferring and trying to avoid mistakes. It would be good to see her get more assertive on offense, but it would also help if teammates could get her the ball when she’s open.

This was a much-needed victory for GW, albeit against La Salle. With a pair of tough games coming up, this boost in confidence should be helpful.

Re: GW versus La Salle Game Thread

Nice win. At least one of the basketball teams has been winning a bit recently. Also I love the pink uniforms and wish they wore them more often.
