Would You Rather?

A would you rather for the off day:

Just realized I forgot to pose the question lol. Would you rather be Duquesne, testing yourself early in the OOC and being 0-5 or GW, taking the easy street but being 5-1?

Duquesne
Record: 0-5
3rd hardest OOC SOS in the A10
Starting Kenpom: 142
Current Kenpom: 233

GW
Record: 5-1
Easiest OOC SOS in the A10
Starting Kenpom: 158
Current Kenpom: 142

Yes, I'd rather.

Re: Would You Rather?

Since I make a drive in to most of the home games, if I had to choose between those 2, GW schedule right now is preferable.  Let’s relook during the A10 sked and see if this prepared Duquesne any.

BTW I know I am critical
Of Drumgoole , but Max Edward’s was 1-9 from 3 yesterday.  At some point you have to just admit it is not your day and look for others right?

Re: Would You Rather?

I have also have not so far been a fan of Drumgoole. He is off to terrible start, but not as bad as Max.
Here's comparison of  Max to Drumgoole.
Category: Max -- Drumgoole
Rebounds: 4.8 -- 3.3
3 pt. shooting percentage: 17 -- 25
FG oercentage: 31 -- 34
Free throw percentage: 69 -- 64
Turnover percentage: 2.2 -- 1.5
Points per game -- 8.6 -- 11.7

Re: Would You Rather?

Interesting question.    I think everyone would prefer to be 5-1 than 0-5, so I prefer GW.  On the other hand, unlike teams that are trying to play there way into an at large bid through their OOC schedule, this is not the case with GW.  Our OOC should not be about resume building but rather preparation for the conference schedule, and I will repeat as I have said on numerous occasions...our schedule doesn't benefit us in the long run.   Notwithstanding, I looked at the SOS for our A-10 conference mates, and they were mostly pretty bad also. Here are some of the SOS ratings for fellow conference members.  GW is still the lowest, at 353 (of 364).

Richmond:   254
Dayton:   321  (how can that be? )
VCU:   201 (How can that be II)
Loyola:   334
Mason:  305
URI:  349
St. Joes:  139
St. Bonnies:  331
Davidson:  339
LaSalle:  282
St. Louis:  99
UMass:  109
Fordham:  184
Duquesne:  137

Re: Would You Rather?

First, the 137th strongest schedule in the country is not exactly John Chaney scheduling Temple games.  Duquesne's five losses were to Lipscomb, Princeton, DePaul, Milwaukee and South Dakota State.  Two were at home and only DePaul was a true road game.  5-1 will almost always be preferable to 0-5 but if the Dukes had lost 5 to a Murderer's Row of opponents, then maybe I could make their case.

Regarding Max vs Drumgoole, I have little doubt that Max is the more naturally talented player.  Gerald is either pressing or simply lacks the talent to play at this level and given the caliber of opponents in 5 of GW's 6 games, I would say he's been pressing.  I'd also be quick to point out that he has not been taking very many bad shots, tends to shoot in rhythm, and does not appear to be a problem attitudinally.

Re: Would You Rather?

For Duquesne with a new coach and younger team, I would have scheduled the way GW did.

For GW, with a team that is still on the younger side but with slightly more continuity, I would still schedule on the weaker side, but throw in two games against teams from a top 15 conference that's expected to at least be average in their conference. Hampton, North Carolina A&T, and ODU seem destined to finish near the bottom of the CAA and Sun Belt. GW could have played slightly better teams from those conferences. I thought Louisiana was bad, but ODU might be even worse in the Sun Belt. The fact that the game is on the road only barely moves the needle for me. I feel like CC is terrified of facing even a potential "epitomy of brutality" with this schedule.

Re: Would You Rather?

Adding insult to injury, Duquesne remains winless as they lose to a Hampton team that GW beat by 28.

Re: Would You Rather?

Well, not sure if it's any indiciation of how either team's season will end up during A10 play, but Duquense just lost to Hampton by 5 (I belive they were 6.5 point favorites). We beat them 28

Re: Would You Rather?

Add this to the comparison: Duquesne loses to Hampton 64-59

Edwards 5pts

Re: Would You Rather?

As I any many other posters have pointed out here, this is a false dichotomy. While I understand the difficulties in a school like GW scheduling any P5 school, let alone a Top 25 team, and would agree that it is not beneficial to take the Cheney approach to scheduling when developing a program as Caputo is trying to do, I also think there is no excuse for and no advantage to (in terms of preparing for A10 play) consistently having one of the 10 weakest OOC schedules in the country. Give me an average OOC SOS among A10 programs and I will be happy.

Based on the numbers provided above, this would be a 249 OOC SOS, similar to Richmond. I'd take that.

Exactly.  Nobody is asking for a killer schedule.  Just a more challenging one.

Re: Would You Rather?

Good time to revisit this.  Duquesne and Max Edwards just lost to Hampton, who we destroyed.  No question I’d rather be us.

Re: Would You Rather?

💯💯. Max with a 3:1 turnovers-to-assists ration. Don’t miss those heaves that ended in the stands.

Re: Would You Rather?

Max was a contributor here, including A10 Rookie Of The Year.
This may be an example of how transferring-- or transferring too much can negatively. affect performance, especially in an emotional plsyer.
Like Bamisile's disappointing time at Oklahoma.

Re: Would You Rather?

There’s a reason Caputo either didn’t want him back or at least was fine with him leaving (not sure which).  Max is a talented guy, but not a great team player and gets too down on himself when things are going badly.  I’m sure he’ll get hot at some point for the Dukes, but I think our team chemistry is better with what we have now.
