Opponent Summary: GW welcomes the Dayton Flyers to the Smith Center on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers have exceeded expectations so far this season, playing above .500 in the A10 despite being projected to finish in 11th place. Their 6-5 OOC included a loss to Miami of Ohio, a team that dispatched the Revs earlier in the season as well. Their up and down A10 performance has included wins over Duquesne, VCU, and UMASS, as well as losses to LaSalle and URI. Dayton is led by guard Ivy Wolf, who sports a hefty 16.0 ppg average, while shooting 42.3% from beyond the arc. Arianna Smith (12.1 ppg, 9.3 rpg) has been a force inside, hitting on 62.8% of her field goal attempts. Ohio State grad transfer Nicole Stephens provides the playmaking, dishing out over 3 apg, while scoring at a 6.9 ppg clip. Dayton scores 64.6 ppg, while giving up 63.9 ppg to their opponents. They hit on 41.7% of their total shot attempts and 31.7% from 3-point range. Their assist to turnover ratio is .7.
About the game: Dayton comes into this matchup following a 61-51 loss to Davidson on their home court. In that game, Wolf was held in check (3-12 with 9 points), while Smith posted a 10/11 double-double. To contend in this game, GW has to play four competitive quarters and the defense will have to limit Wolf, particularly from beyond the arc. That will not be easy if Smith dominates on the inside. The offense will also have to play better than of late-- refrain from launching questionable 3-pointers, increase their success rate on transition attempts, and secure the ball late in the game. Mott has to neutralize Smith. Andrews and Reynolds have to dribble less and get other players involved earlier in the shot clock. Calisto has been great on the boards, but has to take better shots. Engel has not been getting great looks and has been rushing her shots. Someone from the bench, particularly Diala, Lewis, or Sims, has to have a productive game. If enough things go right, the Revs could take a 4-game winning streak into their matchup against Richmond, the best team in the A10.
The last GW A10 4-game winning streak was in the 2022-2023 season, when they reeled off 5 straight wins.

Final Result: Dayton rides big first half to 66-51 win over GW.
Today’s starters: Andrews, Calisto, Engel, Mott and Reynolds. Dayton started out well inside with Smith getting an and-one to start things off. GW couldn’t find the range early, missing a some 3-point attempts and turning the ball over several times. At the 4:17 media break, the Flyers held a 13-6 advantage. Although the Revs had trouble with the Dayton press, they made a recovery and were fortunate to be down only 14-11 at the end of the 1st period. In the 2nd quarter, GW rallied early and monetarily took the lead, but multiple sloppy GW offensive trips let Dayton retake the lead at 20-17 with 4:39 left in the period. GW then literally handed the game over to Dayton, with turnover after turnover leading to a 22-0 Flyers run and a 38-18 halftime lead. Smith had 10 points for Dayton and Wolf added 9 points. For GW Engel had 5 points. The 3rd quarter was no better for GW, as the offense continued to sputter. Dayton was able to increase their lead to 49-23 with 4:13 left in the 3rd quarter. Despite the Dayton press, GW was able to play even with Dayton in the 3rd quarter, trailing by a 54-34 tally entering the final period. Both offenses stalled coming into the final period, but Dayton’s press paid off again, and turnovers helped the Flyers increase the lead to 62-38 going into the last 5:00 of the game. GW rallied again, holding down the Flyers’ offense, and finished strong in a 66-51 defeat to Dayton University. Wolf led Dayton with 18 points, followed by Smith with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Reynolds was the only double-figure scorer for GW, finishing with a career high 22 points.
GW could not handle the Dayton press in the first half and it cost them the game. The pressure was not that great, but GW looked intimidated against the press, lacked movement towards the ball, and made many late and weak passes to open teammates. The Revs’ 16 1st half turnovers led to 16 points for the Flyers, many on wide open 3-pointers. The second half was a different story. Despite playing against full court pressure for the entire half, GW managed to win the half by a 33-28 margin. Sara Lewis, who did not play in the 1st half, gave GW a spark, and Reynolds, after a rough 1st half, came alive on the offense to score almost all of her points after the break. Andrews (3-15 from the field) was once again a liability at times, getting rejected at the basket multiple times and mishandling the ball against the press. Only Reynolds (7-11) shot above 50% for the game, as the rest of the team could only manage to hit on 22% of their shots. No question that this was a really poor showing, after winning 3 straight games.
Things will not get easier for the Revs with Richmond next up on the road.

BC (and DMV too) Thanks for the encouraging words. As my retired brethren will tell you, it's nice to be able pass the time doing things you enjoy. And although the season hasn't gone so well, I still love these young women and how they represent GW. Hopefully, I haven't been too harsh with them.
