Re: 2025 Portal Info

May take a while to see what the new situation is going to do to college sports. Hard reality is going to set in eventually for a lot of players.  If you don't produce, your gone. No money. No degree. How long some equilibrium will take place no one knows right now. Really screwed up. I for one can't follow someone who has jumped ship. They no longer have a positive impact on our program. Just a negative one if they play against us.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Some pretty harsh takes on this thread.  Why be loyal to GW (or worse, donate) when there is no reciprocity in return as Real LFO points out?  TC can't follow someone who has jumped ship?

It really wasn't that long ago when the primary debate was over whether players should be paid.  The overwhelming majority felt that they should be. But I guess that meant if they are paid by GW, only in the amount that GW wants to pay them.  If you really believe that these young athletes should be paid, then you should also believe in their right to hit the open market and command whatever someone is willing to pay for their services.  Or for that matter, their ability to change programs to help improve their own personal situations such as more playing time.  In plenty of instances, making moves will not work out for these athletes and nobody is suggesting that you shed tears if or when this occurs.

Perhaps players have never truly been loyal but in the old days, when players weren't paid and had to sit out a full season upon transferring, they stayed not out of loyalty but because leaving carried undesired conditions.  If there's no such thing as loyalty at GW, wouldn't this mean there's no such thing at most every other school too?

And didn't Lasan Kromah leave GW for UCONN, where he went on to win a national championship?  Were we really not happy for him?

I think you are missing some of the point here. Nobody expects any player not to do what is best for him whether at GW or at any other school. Whether that's money or playing time or being closer to home, a better relationship with the coach, or whatever.

So the point is if players are going to leave GW to seek better, GW can also seek better. It's a two-way street. I'm glad that Jun and Jacoi are doing what they believe is best for them. Apparently, CC either didn't see the need to retain them or retain them at their price or other demands. CC gets to make that determination, right or wrong. He will be judged accordingly. However, I would be remiss if I didn't say I am also glad we have a chance to upgrade both spots.

So the concept of loyalty both ways is a thing of the past. There should be no requirement of loyalty on any part. It's just business at this point because the new system has taken the emotion out of it and made cash the king. Whether I like a player, think he is a credit to the GW community, think he contributed to the betterment of the team etc. has little or no bearing now.

To me the message is, hope it works out for Jun and Jacoi but hope it works out more for GW. In any event, we are moving on just like they are.

Let's sign that HM Power Forward and we can move on.

Think of Caputo and team as an NBA front office. Having to make hard decisions within a salary cap.

"Apparently, CC either didn't see the need to retain them or retain them at their price or other demands. CC gets to make that determination, right or wrong. He will be judged accordingly."

Well, I can't say I'm overjoyed over how that reads.  In the best case scenario, CC played both Jun and Jacoi off the bench.  Yes, CC does get to decide this.  And yes, this could have prompted both players' decisions.

However, a resounding NO regarding CC making any determinations.  There is no evidence to suggest that either player had demands be it financial, playing time, a starting slot, or any combination.  If CC had seen the need to retain either or both players, there is no evidence to suggest that he could have.  There is no evidence to suggest that CC would have cut either or both players had they wished to remain at GW.  It is the players who now hold the cards.

Again, coaches can help facilitate these decisions for players to move on.  This is certainly what I hope you meant to say Rising.  What you wrote reads (to me anyway) like CC held all of the cards.  Not in this day and age.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Without flogging this to death, I just need to justify why I had a problem with Jun beginning with the first true road game against American.  In the first 4 minutes Jacoi made a great steal and fed him with a great pass leading to a 2 hand flush. Jun took the ball out of the net and made it a point to glare at the AU player taking it out. Then trotted the length of the court with both arms at his side while barking at the moon.  Passion is wonderful.  What's not wonderful is his stat line for the game.  With 24 points and 9 rebounds, he went 10 for 21 from the foul line, had ZERO assists, 4 fouls, and SEVEN turnovers in an overtime loss.
In the next game against ODU, in the second road game, he made what was an unconventional self agrandizing dunk to make it 71-59 with 5:50 to go.  That would be GW's last FG for the game!  They eked out 7 FT's over the final 6 minutes and did win by 8.
Take the AU failings on multiple levels and follow it up with funky play at ODU and you get a display of wildness.
Can't wait to see what Jun does the rest of his career.  He's a project!!

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Silly question.  Do the coaches talk to each other about players in the portal"   Would CC call the former coach of a portal player and inquire about him, or is that forbidden.

Depending on the coach and CC’s relationship, the short answer is yes.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

This is an interesting academic discussion and I will follow it for several months.   But, my real interest starts when the team is set and the season starts later this year.  Before that it s a great reason to sit around and have a beer.

You might be surprised but CC has more power than you think. He doesn’t hold all the cards but he certainly holds the cards on playing time and role as well as NIL$$ from GW. In some cases, that’s holding almost all the cards.

If you don’t want to click on the link, a UTSA player (who transferred from Wake) posted a text message from his coach offering him $125k in NIL money and then I guess stiffed him. After Monsanto posted the screen shot of the text, the coach allegedly blocked his number.  (Just the player side of the story).

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Sounds like he selfishly chose to play for the name on the back of the jersey rather than the front!
In all seriousness, not that upset about missing out on him, even if he ends up working out for the Bulldogs given the performance of GW's CAA transfers last year.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

After 45 years as a dedicated fan of GW, basketball, season-ticket holder, club member, and contributor to NIL, I am now reasonably certain that I am done after this season.

There is no longer any meaningful connection between me the players and the university making it worth expending any more emotional energy and time. I don’t blame the players for acting like everyone else around them in getting a piece of the pie and I’m sad that this couldn’t have been fixed before the courts got involved.

Let the gamblers and big money folks have their way.

I really appreciate all those who post here and have made my involvement in the game that much more enjoyable, but life moves on, even after 45 years . God bless all of you.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Merrick, you're not alone. I feel the same way. My belief is that unless there's a requirement players stay for more than a year (or longer), this is not going to work out well for most fans, coaches, non-Power Five schools and their professional student athletes.  However, I do believe that people who love to be involved with college basketball programs, gamblers, and a small number of fans who don't care about continuity and quality of play will support no matter what.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Merrick? Only 45 years? Yes, these are strange times. But almost all old timer's like us around the country are feeling like us. Old fan bases are being torn apart on all levels of the NCAA. Even the old timer Tennessee fans are giving up their 60 year season tickets because of the blackmailing by the UT administration for more and more money. More to park, taking of privileges, moving their seats to less desirable areas. AND all of the other reasons you cited.  This is the new SEC, . which is unrecognizable  because of the overexpansion. Tradition games may be on the chopping block. There is really no joy in the Power conferences fan base also.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

I am trying to reflect more on the opportunity to see old friends through games and my belief (as someone in those wooden bleachers for some pretty incredible moments at Smith Center) that supporting Athletics is supporting a great experience for the students who have followed us.

I could probably give you the names of every roster from 1993 onward... until maybe 4 years ago, and then the revolving door is too much to recall.
