Re: 2025 Portal Info

Started another thread on it, but in case people miss it: Jean Aranguren from Hofstra/Ions signs with GW!

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Jean Aranguren will transfer to George Washington, his agent Paolo Zamorano tells @TheAthleticCBB He averaged 14.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game last season at Hofstra.

Still sounds disturbing when the news of the transfer is broken by the player's "agent".   Nice numbers.  Hope it translates to the A-10, as we seem to do much better with players transferring "down" from the power conferences rather than "up" from the lesser mid-major conferences, even if the numbers aren't as good.  By my count, we now have 11 players under scholarship:   6 returnees (Castro, Jones, Moss, Autry, Williams and Bevins), 3 portal transfers and 2 incoming frosh. Clearly the last remaining scholarship (contract?) or 2 needs to go to bigs, as I am not sure that we have done nearly enough to address this major hole in the team.

Who is Williams? Do you mean Johnson?

They lost a big to Nebraska that they were close to but are still on the hunt.

Is this the player we lost out on?

Re: 2025 Portal Info

A10 Rookie of the Year Deuce Jones is leaving La Salle for St. Joe's.  This might warrant some discussion in Philly.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Indeed it might.
At some point, it also should prompt some discussion on whether this Wild West makes
any sense for college basketball.
Until then, prudence would make it a good idea for us to get two bigs with our remaining spots.

Sure why not 4 more bigs to make sure we have it covered? This isn't fantasy basketball where you can just get transfers to come with no hope of playing to load up a roster. Either that or you will get low caliber transfers who won't help anyway. We have 2 posts - Castro and Hunger. Garrett can play a 3/4. We need one more 4. We have a spot with minutes for one more 4. After that it is unlikely we will add any bigs. While everyone would love to have 13 killers on their roster, the reality is you need 8 or 9 that can play because that is all you are going to be able to give regular minutes to.

Castro
Hunger
Johnson
Jones
Autry
Dinkins
Aranguren
Bevins
Moss

Who doesn't play if you add 2 bigs?

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Need to have Garrett contingency plans at the 3/4 this year, so I wouldn't be opposed to using the two spots on those positions. Adding Dayan late last offseason from a talent perspective looked good, but he had too much of an injury history prior that it was risky.

Hopefully the 4 can slide down to the 5 if needed in an emergency, as expecting Slim/Luke to not miss a single game next season due to injury would also be unwise.

Adding one guy with a bit of size on the wing would make sense to me just to give CC that option that doesn't have to be Garrett (otherwise he would have to turn to Chaudhri who has no experience in college). It definitely appears that Ty or Tricky will see sizable minutes at the 3 as CC opts to go smaller a lot. Maybe even Jean as well. Also not seeing a lot of opportunities for Moss as of now, although would love to see an Armel Potter-like breakout in his second year at GW.

Julian Reese portal.

He’d look great as the 4 for us. 😂

If you are talking about optional roster construction you would be correct. Problem comes when guys want $$$ and playing time. When a 5 looks and sees we already have Castro/Hunger at his position - probably going to look elsewhere. Johnson hopefully can make it through a season. But I do agree we need a 3 and a 4 in the perfect world. The question is are we bringing in backups for depth or starters? A quality starter will be very expensive. So I think CC will opt for cheaper quality depth options unless he can really get a top player. This is getting to be like Moneyball where you have to spend on some positions and find a bargain at others.

Makes sense to me. I know in the past JC's approach was landing a walk-on 5 who would maybe serve as that option.

One guy that I'm looking at who may be considered a quality starter is Josh Harris of North Florida. UNF never plays any D, but he's still on the younger side and has upside. I'm surprised he hasn't committed anywhere yet, but apparently he wants similar money to his ex-teammate Jasai Miles (who funnily enough had visited GW before committing to Indiana) and no one is giving it to him. Not sure how much is left in GW's budget but that would be an impressive land (although likely unrealistic).

Re: 2025 Portal Info

We got Bubu!

https://x.com/247hshoops/status/1915178868865978736

NEWS: Tarleton State transfer Bubu Benjamin has committed to George Washington, his agency @WEAVE told @LeagueRDY.

Benjamin is a big guard at 6-foot-7 who has played both of his collegiate seasons at Tarleton State. Started 31 of 32 games this season.

He averaged 13.9PPG, 4.6RPG, 1.7APG and 1.5SPG this season.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Sounds like we got another SF with Tyrone Marshall

https://x.com/JonRothstein/status/1915197933005271344

Stats: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/5106841/tyrone-marshall-jr

So we're currently looking at

Castro
Hunger
Johnson
Jones
Autry
Dinkins
Aranguren
Bevins
Moss
Bubu Benjamin
Tyrone Marshall

My guess is Bevins and Moss get the short end of the stick here.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

This buy a player is a total disaster for college sports.  Even the Big Boys like the SEC and Tennesse is smarting. Reading about the mess here in Tennessee concerning their quarterback situation is unsettling. Pay a guy 2 million and then get blackmailed. I now want 4 million. I LOVE Tennessee, he says. But I'm going to UCLA. Bizarro World seems to have impacted all sports now. The High School sports situation here in Tennesse is crazy too.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Bubu can shoot the rock.  Made 5 threes vs Michigan and scored 21 against SMU.  Shot 38% from deep and has positional size at 6’7”!

Marshall is kind of a stretch 4.  Shot 36% from three his sophomore year. Slumped to 32% last year, but on high volume (43 made).  He also had huge block (4.9%) and steal (3.1%) percentages his sophomore year.

These seem like exactly the kind of players profiles who seem both realistic and like good fits for us.

Going to be interesting to manage the minutes:

- Castro and Hunger at the 5.

- Garrett J, Marshall, Bubu as big wings/small ball 4s.

- Dinkins, Aranguren, Autry, Jones as the guards.

Bevins / Moss as depth kind of for either group, plus the 2 freshman who could potentially be good enough for minutes.

Like the roster!

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Two super exciting pickups! Love that they can both shoot. I think Caputo and staff have put together quite a nice roster. They've clearly leaned into experienced guys who've shown they can produce at lower levels. The depth is the best it's been in my few years of following GW basketball (which I recognize is a rather low bar) and I think could allow us to compete for a double bye.

As silly as I found the extra year of eligibility for JUCO players ruling at the time, I am happy to see we're taking advantage of it with Dinkins and Marshall.

We'll be recording an episode of GW Basketball Insiders tomorrow morning with Matt Colpoys talking about the offseason. Let us know if you have any questions for him or things we should discuss
