Re: GW BEATS South Florida Game Thread!

Back from CT and I have a few observations.

1. Hodgson is a clown. Plain and simple. Way before the handshake line incident there was plenty of evidence. Actually what I think Hodgson meant to say was that he hopes that he has a lot of money saved up because if Saturday was any indication, this coaching gig isn't going to be for long. I could go on and on with specifics but what I don't want to do is overshadow what was a good victory by GW by focusing on Hodgson and his classless antics.

2. South Florida has some definite talent and should be be pretty good. What was apparent in this game was that for the first time in awhile we had the talent to match a team like that. Besides Autry and Dinkins, I was impressed with Bubu and Ty and perhaps the unsung hero, Jean. The man can defend and brings a toughness to the floor that we had been lacking in past years at the guard spot. What is most apparent is  that CC has a number of buttons he can push and if Garrett can get back to good health, he will have one more. We are deeper and more talented than we have been in the last 10 years. What that ultimately means we will all find out together. I wish we had a true PG but I think against most teams we will be able to use the combo guards effectively.

3. Don't get me started about the refs. My voice is shot because of those assholes and I am not generally a ref complainer. The inconsistency in calls was what was infuriating. Touch fouls were called with two hand shoves ignored. Guys were allowed to run through screens as well as literally act like a pulling guard in football. South Florida played chippy and was allowed to get away with it for the most part. The constant calls clearly affected the flow of the game. The officiating clearly favored their style of play. Even the Providence fans who showed up early were agreeing so I know it wasn't just my GW bias. That's why Saturday's win was even more impressive - overcame a good opponent and the refs.

4. We will actually find out a lot about this team and whether it can consistently beat teams it should on Wednesday. We owe American. Time to come out focused. The mark of mature team is consistency. It's important not to undo all of the good work on Saturday by laying an egg on Wednesday. We've won two games. Great! But there is a lot of basketball left to be played. Onto the next ...

Re: GW BEATS South Florida Game Thread!

First, a few remarks about the Hodgson-Autry encounter.

I don't like to overreact to stories which may not be fully or even partially true.  Nevertheless, this is an oddly specific anecdote that makes me wonder whether someone could fabricate to this level of detail.  So, I am going to assume that this is a true story.

First, if Hodgson has any reputation as being someone who would love to coach at Syracuse, I have to ask how much if any of this is his own doing?  Is this simply a matter of an up and coming coach being from the region and nothing more?  Or, has he put this idea in the minds of some or many?

Next, if I am South Florida's athletic director, I can't imagine how I would feel about hiring a coach who has now coached two games for the school being linked to a more prominent job, and whether any of this is his own doing.  Especially under the circumstances of a popular and successful coach suddenly passing away and the school trying to properly rebuild the program.

Now, if Hodgson has done nothing to create or promote this perception, that changed after Saturday's game.  He crossed a line, not a little bit, but badly.  Whether his "nice game" was sarcastic, and whether Trey's response was above board, all pale in comparison to what came next.  A coach can't say this to a player, period.  Doesn't matter how badly you feel about the loss, or how you feel about the Autry family, or the Syracuse job.  This man should be suspended for at least multiple games without pay.  He should learn that what he said was completely inexcusable.  What a horrible message this sends to his players, fellow coaches, and USF students and fans.

Regarding the game, much has been said so I'll summarize my thoughts:

1) You could not help but get the sense that both teams knew how important this game was.  The game was played with extremely high intensity.

2) Poor officiating aside, our guys have to be smarter about picking up fouls.  Woo's second foul was completely unnecessary and put him on the bench for much of the first half.  Slim just has to realize that giving up a basket, particularly in a fast paced game where there will be lots of scoring, is a lot smarter if it means keeping him on the court, as opposed to always trying to make a play which often leads to foul calls.

3) Kudos to PKGW for his post.  If I could make one change to this board, I would take away the opportunity to post in realtime while games are unfolding.  Dinkins doesn't fit.  Great shot by Dinkins.  Silly turnover by Dinkins.  Dinkins keeping both teams in the game.  Dagger by Dinkins.

My God, get me off this roller coaster.  Newsflash:  guys rarely if ever play perfect games.  They do take bad shots.  They do turn the ball over.  Is it imperative to react every time someone fails to make the right play?  On the old board, I was the person who felt that college players ought to be subject to constructive criticism.  I still feel this way, but are these criticisms truly constructive?

And for the record, it has taken Tre Dinkins two official basketball games in a GW uniform to truly realize the value he will bring to this team.  He not only doesn't wilt under pressure but he actually wants the ball in his hands during the biggest moments. There's a lot to be said about a college player who can fit that description and come through in the clutch.  Just not every time, which is true of any player.

4) Like I am sure some of you, I wondered aloud why CC didn't use a timeout to slow down an 11-0 run in less than two minutes to get USF back in the game.  This was a case where GW was unraveling, committing multiple turnovers.  And later, I realized that the game didn't necessarily have to be won and lost with so much time left in the game.  And that when the game was won and lost, CC had all of his timeouts left and needed every one of them.  So I will stand corrected here and acknowledge CC as doing a great job at managing the clock.

5) GW shot 24-28 at the line during the second half.  South Florida was 17-25 at the line during the second half.  The Bulls were also 6-33 from 3 and these were not all contested.  They seemed to exhaust themselves playing the manner in which they played.

6) Many of our 21 turnovers came against the press,  Aranguren gets credited with many of these but in reality, that's only because someone has to.  These were "team turnovers" that resulted from GW's inability to break their press.  If Hunger or Castro is supposed to run to the center of the court on the pressbreaker but doesn't, that's really on them though Jean gets the TO because he had the ball last.  Something that clearly needs work.

7) I think we'll be having this point guard discussion all season.  Please refer back to FQ's description about this because it's correct.  Would "having a point guard" mean we would have had someone who could have dribbled around and through their press? Aside from Shawnta Rogers, have we ever had such a player?

Re: GW BEATS South Florida Game Thread!

One aspect of this team that deserves credit for the win is their conditioning.  Castro, Bubu, and Woo, are absolute greyhounds who look in peak basketball shape.  They can run the floor with anyone!!  Both Tricky and Hunger look more trim and fit.  As a group it appears that they've busted their tails for CC and staff.  That's why FSU was gassed and bent over tugging at their shorts in the final minutes.  Omojufo and Brown were visibly gasping for air.  Of course they pressed for 4 minutes which will wind anyone.

My only question is why don't we run the baseline or run anything to break the press?  There are Youtube videos showing how to do it.  We don't need an elite ball handler, just some cardinal rules of avoiding the first pass into a coffin corner, or find the open man downcourt since that's where the advantage is.  We really looked inept by not breaking it for an easy 2.  And can we please not give up 2 offensive rebound putbacks on their missed free throws??  Seems to happen every game.

Oh well...now we can scout St. Louis vs Lindenwood tonight to see if they cover the -24.5 lol.  Then bring on the AU game Wednesday that we've been salivating for.  Go Revs!!!

Re: GW BEATS South Florida Game Thread!

Been out of town for a wedding.  Did I miss something about Bevins?  Box score not showing his name.  Was looking forward to a big year from him.

Re: GW BEATS South Florida Game Thread!

1) To Mike K's point, would like to see more of Bevins to make a determination in where he fits. We have
a lot of guard talent, needless to say, creating a logjam. But his freshman year showed some interesting things, primarily 38.5 % 3 point shooting. And that's coming in cold. 4-8 from 3 pt. against Boise State in that debacle.
Also recall perhaps he seemed to have a nose for the ball. Big guard who could play SF, one would think.. Could be good for the press. Whatever may be keeping him on the bench besides logjam, he seems like the type of player who could be developed over the years, including on defense. But it doesn't work that way any more--and potential tends to leave if they don't play.
2) When I am able to do so without hyperventilating, will look at the timeout situation during their
run. Maybe wrong, but didn't CC eventually cave and call time, but seemingly late after the 11 point run?
It was helpful to have timeouts (don't recall if we had any left) when I think it was Dinkins who was trapped and used the TO. But that run had the potential to alter the game for bad, so needed to be halted.
Fortunately, our mettle did that--and kudos for the guys for coming back so tough.
3) I think Tre Dinkins is finding his role--and it came up big yesterday. And if he's shooting well, good that he wants to be the man. Impressive foul shooting too in the latter part of the game.
But always being the man brought us a lackluster period (and transfers, a subject for another time) in the JB era, especially before CC. We have plenty of talent to spread around, which we did at times last year under a more restrained and thoughtful JB, whose talent might serve him well in the G League.
us the lackluster JB years. We don't need to focus on just one person.
4) One mid-game observation I made was that Hodgson was a "jerk". This is before whatever was said that
set Trey Autry off--for good reason. It's hard to imagine anything that Trey could have said or done (for one reason, refs were on taunting and called a T on USF for that) that would warrant such a response from the
coach. Don't have any excuse for players who are also adults, but Trey is not known to act that way.
If this guy is seeking the Syracuse position--another man's job while he still has it, Hodgson should be
ashamed, not combative. He should be deferential to Trey, unless something horrific was said in the somehow possible but unlikely event that the refs who were all over everything didn't hear it--and even then, perhaps go to CC or let it roll off.
Would like to hear more from someone at the game or who knows more about this, about what transpired
between their coach and Trey Autry.
It's very important to us to know what motivated Trey so much that he
had to be held back and important to the USF community to see what their coach is really showing about himself after just a couple of games.

Re: GW BEATS South Florida Game Thread!

As for Bevins, the Peacock commentator's alluded to a back injury when they were also talking about Garrett's injury. It didn't sound serious, but they didn't give details.

Re: GW BEATS South Florida Game Thread!

Bevins has a back injury. Apparently it randomly locked up on Thursday or Friday of last week and he wasn't even able to get on the plane. Unsure of the severity or if he'll play tomorrow against American

Just a quick response Mayhem.

3)    I am probably as guilty as anyone of making snap judgments during the course of the game.    Please remember that there are 2 ways to view any game...as a spectator and as a fan.   Although the spectator and fan are both watching the same game, they are seeing and perceiving the game in a vastly different manner.  The spectator reacts in a more rational manner whereas the fan reacts in a more emotional manner, which includes some "real time" analysis of what has just transpired on the court.   Do not be too harsh on the fan for saying what is on his or her mind...we are not bad people.   As for Tre Dinkins, all I can do is base my opinions on what I saw over 3 games.    And what I am seeing is a volume shooter who could hoist it up at any time after he passes the half court line and who does not play very good defense and does not seem to be making his teammates better.  But yes, I am seeing someone who can get hot and carry a team.   Take your choice...a poor man's James Bishop or a rich man's Gerald Drumgoole.

4)    I hear you on CC's wanting to bank the timeouts for the end of the game, but I am still of the opinion that one should have been used down that hot stretch by South Florida.   We were so close to losing control over that game; the team was flustered and we couldn't even get the ball into the front court without turning it over.  If ever there was a time that coaching was needed, it was then.
