Re: GW BEATS UMBC 89-52!

Not too much to discuss about the game.  A total blowout against an overmatched team.  The defense has obviously been impressive, but what has really impressed me is that the offense rarely takes a bad shot.  Everything they put up is a good look.  That is how you have another game in which 5 players scored in double digits with nobody playing more than 23 minutes.   One very impressive stat is that our centers, playing a combined 40 minutes, scored 26 points on 11-16 shooting and had 25 rebounds   As a team, UMBC had only 29 rebounds.  I don't ever recall a GW team going 9-10 players deep like this one appears capable of doing.  Now, Cayman is going to be a good reality check.   Notwithstanding our lofty #52 KenPom, our strength of schedule is a not so lofty 333, with 4 of our wins being against Maine (#303); American (282), ODU (250) and now UMBC (295).   Our competition in Caymen will be McNeese (98); Middle Tennessee (152) and Murray State (111).  By time we sit down for our Thanksgiving Turkey, we will have a better idea of whether this is a genuinely good team.

Re: GW BEATS UMBC 89-52!

It was a very impressive performance, especially defensively. Blowing out a D1 opponent to this degree is never easy, regardless of who it is. UMBC seemed to have no idea what they were doing on offense, often just throwing the ball towards the rim with the hope that the shot would fall. It had the feeling of past GW teams when they were overmatched against really good competition so to be on the other side of that is a great feeling. It was good to see Ty back as well. Offensive shot selection was pretty good for the most part - a bit of credit to UMBC for trying to battle a bit down low against Slim and Luke but truthfully they were just overmatched tonight (and that was with them getting a more favorable whistle from the refs). If I were them, I would probably feature King a bit less and try to get Armstrong more looks.

I'm with others on the board that it was disappointing to see the student turnout. I get that UMBC is far from a marquee opponent and it was a weekday game, but I was cringing looking at all the empty seats. This team is really good and should have the support for it. Not sure what it is going to take.

Press conference is well worth a watch.  Caputo gave a lengthy discussion about scheduling and how the big money leagues just freeze out the A10, making it much, much harder to get in the tourney - not because of the quality of the teams, but because of the way the big money leagues have rigged the system.

He also talked about how good our defense was today, specially talking about our switching really bothering their off-ball offense.

Also, said he needs to work with the team on taking better shots the first couple of minutes.

Lots of candor, but he always shows such an attention for detail and forward-thinking approach to basketball.

FQ- agree.  The last 5 minutes was a great honest answer on how nET was built to rig the system for the Power 5 and how it prevents scheduling for teams like GW.  Great stuff. On how we call to get into certain tourneys and are told no.

All 3 games are listed as being on FloCollege, which I assumed is a part of FloSports.    This is a subscription network.   Make sure that you sign up for only 1 month (there are no other games on Flo for the rest of the season) or you will be stuck for a year subscription.  FYI...for future reference, if you go to the official men's basketball site and check the schedule, the TV coverage will be listed for each game..

Re: GW BEATS UMBC 89-52!

GW is now tied with UNC for 16th in the country for largest margin of victory this season at +24.8.  Only SLU is a higher A10 member at +26.0.  The top school in the country is everyone's favorite G school...Georgia.

The most gratifying aspect of the season thus far has been that the Jamion Christian/Chris Caputo eras prior to this season have been littered with both losses to schools that GW should not be losing to along with very close calls (albeit wins) against these types of programs.  So far, GW has shown a consistent knockout punch against everyone that they should be knocking out.  And while this logically sounds easy to do, history has shown that this is often anything but.

The Cayman Island games are important because this represents three upcoming opponents who more closely resemble South Florida in ability than Maine or AU.  Middle Tennessee lost its first game last night to Michigan, McNeese has just one loss to Santa Clara, and Murray State owns just one loss to SMU.  All respectable losses.  It will be interesting to see whether GW can play this efficiently and effectively against a steady diet of better competition.

UMBC was another example of guys playing together, contesting everything on defense, and making the right plays on offense far more often than not.  It's nice to know that a Tre Dinkins can take 7 shots and have a quiet night while the team wins in a blowout, contrasted with South Florida where every one of his 22 points were needed.

Let's hope to keeping it rolling in the Caymans.

Re: GW BEATS UMBC 89-52!

This tournament is unfortunately likely an early make or break for our at large NCAA tournament chances. These are three opportunities for what will likely look like decent wins down the road. If we slip up against any of the three, we will likely be struggling for any kind of at large bid. McNeese State probably is the best of the three but we will see. Here's to positive thoughts on three wins in the Caymans.

You mean you don't like Flo Sports' coverage of D3 games LSF?

When I moved to Fredericksburg about 10 years ago, I said I would like to start going to some Mary Washington University  (our local D-111 school) games, perhaps against regional rival Marymount.  I have still never gone but I am still talking about going.  I guess I get more than enough of my basketball fix though GW and The Knicks.  And the only time I've been to Marymount was when I was still living in Calhoun Hall, to go to a mixer.  (Only the real oldtimers would understand).

Re: GW BEATS UMBC 89-52!

Great seasons evolve over many months.  After 5 games this team has shown growth in confidence and playing for each other without personal agendas.  Teams tend to play to the level of the competition so not seeing the drop off against weaker teams is very encouraging.  The threes will come and go but the winning of 50/50 balls, rebounding, steals, and deflections are effort dependent.  This team has maturity and chemistry and a desire to win.  As the buzz around this team increases, the students and area hoops fans will show up.  Keep it going Revs!!!

Playing at UMBC level of effort on D three nights in a row will be very hard, balanced by the fact that a) we are very deep, and b) the opponents should be tired as well even if they don't put in as much effort on D.

Re: GW BEATS UMBC 89-52!

For those not at games, not sure if this carries over on the broadcast.  The bench, at times, starts its own chant of “defense”.  At first I thought is was the student section but then realized it was coming from the bench.  And not just the reserves - it is the starters taking a breather that sometimes lead it.

Think this shows how much they buy-in to the defense first mentality and playing for each other.  Early on and things could change with a few losses but love how committed they are to each other
