GW versus Morgan State Game

After Friday’s loss to Georgetown, GW returns home in a quick turnaround Sunday matinee to face the Morgan State Lady Bears of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Morgan, picked to finish 5th in the MEAC, comes into the contest at 1-4 and provides Coach G with a good opportunity to notch her first DI victory at GW. Like GW, the Lady Bears do not have a DI win this year, so one team will have a breakthrough, regardless. Morgan's  losses were on the road to UVA in Charlottesville and Mount Saint Mary’s, and at home to Stetson and nationally ranked (7th) Johns Hopkins (DIII powerhouse). For the Lady Bears, Gabrielle Johnson (11.8 ppg) leads the way, and preseason All-MEAC 1st Team selection Ja’la Bannerman (10.8) follows closely behind.

The GW-Georgetown mismatch revealed some the Revs’ major weaknesses. The Lady Bears may lack the talent of Georgetown, but look for them to press the Revs and try to take advantage inside the paint. On defense, GW has to communicate better and make switches faster, especially when Morgan drives to the basket. Offensively, as in recent years, it appears that the Revs lacks on-court leadership, causing the offense to go off task and devolve into individual-oriented play. With the exception of Becker’s energy and Sim’s controlled effort, there has been little consistency among the other rotation players, presenting a dilemma to the coaching staff. If the Revs don’t limit their turnovers and stiffen their interior defense, Coach G may have a significant wait before achieving her initial DI victory at GW.

The upcoming trip to the Caymans offers little relief, with Miami and Charlotte presenting major challenges for this squad. Four days of preparation before then can only help.

Re: GW versus Morgan State Game

GW runs past Morgan State for 82-56 win.

A balanced scoring attack helped GW coast to an 82-56 win. Coming out of the gate, the Revs succumbed to the Lady Bears’ half court pressure and fell behind 6-0. For whatever reason, Morgan State eased up on the pressure, and for the rest of the game, GW was able to execute their offensive sets without much resistance, playing with a sizable lead for the rest of the game. The smaller Morgan State squad had trouble containing GW on the inside (GW held a 32-16 advantage in points-in-the-paint), and sent the Revs to the foul line for 28 attempts. Despite their early ball handling woes, the Revs finished with just 10 turnovers for the game, a season best against DI competition so far. The defense was solid throughout the game, preventing any big runs by the Morgan offense.

GW had four players in double figures, led by Reynolds (18 points) and Becker (10 points and 7 offensive boards). Phiri and Sims missed some open looks early, but both continued to take good shots and finished with double figures in scoring. All the other players had some nice contributions along the way. Theodorsson was not in uniform and looks to be out for a while, but Loving had some good minutes, especially on the offensive glass. All in all, this was a good bounce back performance following a disappointing showing at Georgetown.

Next up for GW is a Miami squad that might be the best team on the Revs’ OOC schedule. The Hurricanes will be significantly bigger, faster, and athletic than Morgan State, so it will interesting to see how the Revs perform.
