GWAA he started at Mason and then followed his coach to Providence.  Either way he should not be torching us for 23 points on wide open 3s

Is it considered a bad thing for the #45 NET tread to lose at home to the #302 NET team?  Asking for a friend.

Seriously….this puts things in perspective. This team was waaaaayyyy overrated.

As per the aggregator sites, if you buy today you can fly round trip National-Las Vegas-National for as little as $222 for the dates of The Crown.

No excuse for not closing out Fernandez early on.
Looks like this team was highly overrated. I couldn't see the game but I'd like to know what were the coaches doing?
And now they'll face what should be an angry Florida team that has struggled against top competition in losing their last three close fought games. Good thing GW scheduled St. Mary's (Md. Not California) for the game after. Someone must have known something since they'll need a confidence builder right away after Florida.

I'd say it definitely does, unfortunately.
I don't see any reference to a post game news conference. Too bad! For once I'd like to see some hard questions asked of Caputo and his coaches. After all, he just had his contract extended, right?

Re: GW vs Delaware Game Thread

The good news is that the burden of hope has now been lifted. I can now just enjoy fine young men representing GW by playing mediocre basketball, same as I have for the last 10 years.

Re: GW vs Delaware Game Thread

Very disappointing game in every area.  I think GW should have been called for many more fouls (00 was getting clobbered all night, and so was 04). This loss may come back to haunt the team at the end of the season....  Our point guards combined had 3 points?

Will zone be the defense of choice by opponents moving forward?

Re: GW vs Delaware Game Thread

I didn't see any of the game. Just got back from a long meeting. What? We lost to Delaware? Something smells bad here. Whoever went to the game or watched it, what happened? Did the players just quit? Sorry, but this doesn't make sense. Very disturbing result. Strange scores across the country seem to be a norm now. Feel very uneasy now. Sigh!

Re: GW vs Delaware Game Thread

Talk about a deflating, punch in the gut loss.   Coming off 2 losses in Cayman and a scare at Army, I think it is clear that we are not as good as we hoped we would be, notwithstanding that one good half vs. William and Mary.
Some observations on the loss, :
-Delaware had 2 very good players...Fernandez (#4) and their point guard, Bliss (#00) On defense, whomever was guarding Fernandez had a tendency to drop off him in an effort to help defend the lane, where Delaware was weak and no help was really needed.   When that would happen, Bliss was adept at getting the ball to a very quick and very hot Fernandez with enough time to get off his shot.
-Played much to fast for what looked like a 3-2 zone, and as a result we were extremely sloppy with the ball or landed up rushing an ill advised shot. Don't know why we were not able to come up with a better strategy to attack that zone.
-We should have had our way with Delaware inside, but either was unable to get the ball to Castro or we missed too many chippies, put backs and dunks.
-When we were down 5-6 points with about 4 or 5 minutes left in the game, we played like we were down 15-16, gambling on defense which resulted in some easy scores for Delaware that pushed the lead back to 10
-In the end, we had too many players that simply had bad games.  In fact, I would say that everyone other than maybe Autry were pretty bad tonight.

Re: GW vs Delaware Game Thread

Don't care about our NET Rating.
We've now lost to McNeese State, Murray State--and Delaware at home.
Everyone seemed out of sync--and no one could shoot. Or seemingly defend. How many times
does one player have to light us up before we shut him down?
It's a well -roster for our league and we're losing to teams that are lesser priced talent, but maybe
want it more.
  Deeply disappointing heading into Florida.

Re: GW vs Delaware Game Thread

On the heels of Caymans, underperformance vs Army and tonight’s indignity…..if we get blown out by FL we become an instant afterthought in the college basketball world. Very disappointing indeed. Circling the drain when only a few weeks ago things looked so good. Fool me once…..

Re: GW vs Delaware Game Thread

Earlier in the year Rising talked about the long game and the long season and the inevitable highs and lows of a team with talent, but also a team that may be inconsistent, because of a number of factors. Definitely wise words and sentiments that I am thinking about.

And this team will have interesting and exciting games in the A-10, and will win some, maybe more than some, so we have not heard the end of this team.

Thanks DMV for the previews.

I watched the first two minutes of the press conference and really felt for the players answering questions. Basketball is a team game and yet there they were speaking on behalf of a team that is struggling right now.

Dear Moderators,

Please lock this thread and let us never speak of this nightmare ever again.

And dear whomever cast the spell on our rim to put a lid over it, please don’t ever come back to one of our games.

Re: GW vs Delaware Game Thread

I'm not even sure how to describe what I watched tonight on offense. There were signs that this team was missing makable layups during the MTE, although Jean or another player was cleaning them up. Shot selection has also been a problem on occasion like in the Army game, but both problems did not surface until tonight. This team was not engaged for most of the game, and they were taking absolutely head-scratching shots all night. Was it because they were looking ahead to Florida? I don't know one way or the other, but they certainly didn't seem to want to be on the court tonight. They expected to just show up and get a W and had a rude awakening.

There were forced threes. I'm sorry to single out Luke on this, because others definitely took bad shots but his three stood out because he's not made them frequently when he has attempted them and he took an attempt within five seconds of the shot clock. That may have been the worst decision I've seen all season, and it's not even a shot I would have liked if GW was up double digits. I'm all for going uptempo to try to speed the game up, but the shot also has to make sense. That made me want to pull my hair out. I'm also not fond of Garrett's threes that he takes near the top of the arc off the bounce compared to his spot up attempts or when he takes it to the rim.

It wasn't just the threes though. There were midrange shots taken through sheer panic which was crazy given CC's hatred for those shots. I believe they were #2 nationally in Rim & 3 rate after SLU coming into the game. Finally, there was the missed layups, missed and-one opportunities, and dunk attempts. The misses felt contagious across the team and that extended to the FT line. Also several moments where guys took really short jumpers instead of going all the way to the rim. I was surprised to see Slim have eight shot attempts, because it certainly felt less. He should have been fed significantly more, especially in the second half. This team also sucks at lobbing passes for alley-oops.

I don't really have a strong stance on the rotations, but if CJ wasn't fully healthy/had an off night and Jean did as well it felt like Tre should have played a bit more (although he did take a couple of the midrange shots). It's not the end of the world if Ty is getting a few minutes in the first half, but he's just missing everything since coming back from injury. Not sure how useful that will be if he ends up out of the rotation by conference play.

The defense was poor against Fernandez, and it was straight up baffling to see the team keep leaving him alone. CC was literally the coach when he did the same thing for Mason in the second half at the Smith Center! Completely inexcusable.

The trapping in the first half felt really half-assed. We would trap Delaware in the corner and then after a while someone would decide to just walk away. I think during one possession in particular the Delaware player just drove the baseline and finished before the shot clock expired. The purpose was lacking. It was significantly better in the second half, but the offense undid any good things the defense did.

It's been mentioned on here by others in previous games as well but perhaps the biggest issue is the 50-50 balls and scramble plays. When GW comes out on the wrong side nearly every time on these plays, you cannot attest this to luck. There was one play in the first half where the team was on the floor for the loose ball, and I was thinking okay at least it will be a jump ball but no instead it somehow ended up in a Delaware player's hands and the possession kept going. Significantly more toughness will be required against Florida. This team could learn from the way Coach G is having the WBB team play right now. They may not have the same level of talent since it's year 1 under a new coach, but they bring it every night.

When a team's offense is so much ahead of the defense it says two things: 1) the team largely consists of skill offensively and lacks athleticism/defensive ability, or 2) the team is talented, but not bought in and attentive to the details. Yes, GW is still working through things on D like every other team (and it was clear CC was trying things out during the game) but it feels like #2 right now, and it's unclear who the leader on the team is. Slim is a great guy, but from a leadership standpoint it feels a bit like JB (maybe unfair). Is Tricky the vocal one on the team? It wasn't a good sign that nothing changed after halftime.

Ultimately, this felt like the kind of performance that would happen like once if we played Delaware ten (maybe 20) times. Outside of a couple high major buy game upsets, this game may go down as one of the most stunning results in the country all season. I'll give Delaware credit for slowing the game down and playing an effective zone, but truthfully they didn't play that well especially for large stretches in the second half. GW lost it. 58 points for a team that's top 15 nationally in scoring? Just utterly confusing. Maine was successful slowing the game down in the opener, only they were so inept offensively they couldn't seal the deal. There's a reason this team lost to a D2 and Delaware State. I kept waiting for GW to wake up and it didn't happen. GW will need to figure out how to play better against teams slowing the game down during conference play (the Daytons and George Masons of the world), because Florida is not going to do that and they won't be tested against St. Mary's (MD).

At least there isn't a worry about CC being poached anytime soon. I still think he's a good coach, but he is not in tier A of the A10 and that was on display tonight. For just once I wish he would take a timeout and fire up the team instead of pocketing them all for the end. The seven minute mark seemed like it would have been a good time to call one. Even on an off night, a good team finds a way to win tonight.

Looking forward to GWRising saying that we were mistaken if we thought this team was a finished product and that the team is still growing lol. I don't think in any scenario this result should have happened even if GW played their C or D game.

Everyone here ought to be thanking DMVPiranha profusely for these comprehensive previews.  That's probably overkill and I'm not sure it's what he would want, so I'll settle on acknowledging his efforts every so often.  I would venture to say that I can't believe anyone could find this level of detail on each and every GW game anyplace else.  How he consistently does this is beyond me.

I hadn't realized that Justyn Fernandez moved on to Delaware.  He not only hit those four 3's to break open a game for Mason against us but as I recall, he was also a very highly regarded player coming out of high school.  He scored 23 in their most recent game, a loss to Delaware State (sounds a lot like GW losing to AU) which likely led to a few days of tough practices for the Blue Hens.

My trivia for the day s that Coach Martin Inglesby is the brother of Brad Inglesby who created two HBO miniseries:  Mare of Easttown and the recently completed Task.  Both are worthwhile watches, IMO.

And finally, thank you DMVPiranha for all that you do here.

Appreciate the kind words Gwmayhem! I don't know how I keep doing it myself, especially after the team has a performance like this. Ultimately, I'm appreciative of the community on here and that keeps me going, even through tough losses. I enjoy the posts you start as well. This board getting more activity is always appreciated.

Re: GW vs Delaware Game Thread

No, I am not going to say you were mistaken DMVpiranha. But I stick by those words. Unfortunately, what some don’t realize is you just can’t take a collection of perhaps more talented transfer players put them with some returners and automatically expect that in 10+ games they will fall into a cohesive group. Most come from different programs, different schemes and different basketball cultures. This is the era we live in. Give me this same team for a couple of years and nights like last night won’t happen. But that’s not a luxury any coach gets anymore. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it works inconsistently and sometimes it doesn’t work at all. We are probably in the second group right now. It may take more time to move to the first group and we all hope we don’t slip into the latter group.

That said, I do think there are several systemic things that CC needs to look at to see if he can get more consistency. First, I would look at rotations and shortening the bench. Some of this inconsistency may be attributable to the many different lineups on the floor. I am old school in that I believe you play your main guys and sub only when fatigued, poor performance, or in foul trouble. That may hurt some guys feelings but I’ve never believed you can keep most guys happy with PT. Probably there are guys who think they should be playing more right now even with the mass substitutions.

Second, we need to examine our D. I am not a fan of mass switching because I can switch you into the matchup I want on offense. The only problem is now I’m not sure you can adjust after you spent all summer and fall teaching defense a certain way. So I am not sure how much we can alter the D at this point. So we are just going to have to get better at it or maybe mix in a few more adjustments on a possession by possession basis and not as a base defense.

Third, and I say this with all due respect because I am not privy to whatever conversations occur at practice, on the bench, or in the office, but is CC getting the right observations and advice from his staff? Are the scouts he receives on point? I don’t know the answers but I think the questions are legitimate. Only CC knows these answers. I am especially concerned with game management advice because that is where assistants can really help with subs, adjustments and strategy.

Fourth, it may just be that expectations for this team were way out in front of reality and it is a talent issue. I don’t think so but nights like last night make you start to wonder.

Finally, I don’t want to make too much of one game, because in the end it is college basketball and upsets do happen. I still believe you are never as good as you look when you win and never as bad as you look when you lose. But I think we all agree that we shouldn’t be losing to teams like Delaware at home. There is a lot of basketball left to be played so there is still time to get this right. The task just got harder in recent weeks but I trust CC to take a hard look and see what he can do to improve the team.
