GW versus Coppin State Game

After a well-deserved break, GW WBB returns to the friendly confines of the Smith Center on Sunday afternoon to host the Coppin State University Eagles in the final OOC contest of the 2025-26 season. Riding a 6-game winning streak, the Revs will face a struggling Eagles team. Coppin State was projected to 6th among the 8 teams in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and comes into this game at just 2-12, after facing a brutal OOC schedule that included only 3 home games. Among their 12 losses, all away from home, were 7 defeats to power conference teams (Arizona State, Ohio State, Penn State, 13th-ranked Tennessee, 8th-ranked Oklahoma, SMU, and Georgia). The Eagles have been challenged offensively, hardly surprising given the level of competition. Khila Morris is Coppin’s only double figure scorer at 11.1 ppg, but Erin Henry (7.6 ppg) and Paris McBride (7.4 ppg) have both scored in double figures on multiple occasions. In the front court, Center Patricia Sosa Lora and Forward Shanaii Gamble combine to pull down 10.7 rebounds a game. As a team, the Eagles have averaged just 54.1 ppg, while yielding 72.6 ppg.

GW can’t afford to look past Coppin State in anticipation of the conference schedule ahead. Despite their record, the Eagles had competitive losses to Arizona State and SMU, so they are capable of putting together solid quarters of play. In Reynolds, the Revs have found a reliable and efficient scorer. Lewis and Sims continue to be solid offensively, leading the Revs’ inside attack and dishing out to the perimeter for open looks. Coach G has been able to support the starter’s scoring with productive combinations coming off the bench. Theodorsson is making a big impact on both sides of the court, and James and Phiri are coming on strong. On the defensive side, led by Becker’s hustle and energy, GW has held opponents to just 53.7 ppg during the win streak, and outrebounded those teams by an average of 6 boards a game despite a size disadvantage in most of those contests. Loving has been a big plus defensively against taller opponents, and GW’s rebounding by committee (and commitment) approach has paid big dividends.

After this, the Revs travel to Olean, NY to play the Bonnies and start a 17-game stretch of regular season conference games that will be significantly more difficult than the OOC.             Happy Holidays.

Re: GW versus Coppin State Game

GW takes control in 2nd half to defeat Coppin State 63-49 and extend winning streak to 7.

A disruptive Coppin State defense and out-of-sync GW offense resulted in a competitive 1st half that saw GW take a 31-29 lead into the halftime break. After leading by 18-11 in the 1st quarter, the GW offense imploded and let the Eagles get back into the game. This was partly due to foul trouble, and Coach G chose to keep Reynolds and Theodorsson on the bench for the entire the 2nd quarter. As a result, the guard play was sloppy and careless, leading to some easy scores for Coppin State, who otherwise had trouble scoring. CSU was sparked by Kyler Gary-Grayson, who came off the bench to provide the bulk of the Eagles’ scoring in the 2nd period, including going 3-3 from beyond the arc. In the 2nd half, the Revs’ offense was still disjointed, but adequate enough to complement the stifling defense that held Coppin State to just 26% accuracy from the field. Lewis finished with 17 points and 7 boards, while Theodorsson, who fouled out in the 4th quarter, finished with 15 points. Reynolds, who was plagued by foul trouble, played only 17 minutes and finished with 6 points. Sims and Phiri picked up the slack, tallying 9 points an 8 points, respectively.

This was not a great outing for the Revs. GW committed 23 turnovers and 28 fouls. The Eagles were physical and very disruptive at the point of attack to start the game, forcing the backcourt to make careless ball-handling errors or bad passing decisions. Things improved in the 2nd half, as Coach G made a subtle change by going to Dulin as the backup PG. Her steady play allowed the Revs to execute their offense and to focus on getting the ball inside, where they ended up with a 24-14 advantage in points-in-the-paint. In the end, it was the defense that saved the day, holding the Eagles’ starters to a combined 5-32 (15.6%) from then field. While Reynolds, Theodorsson, and Becker sat for long stretches of the 2nd half with 4 fouls each, the defense, regardless of who was in the game, remained stout.

The OOC is complete and GW finishes at 8-5, something hard to imagine following the disappointing performances against Temple, Longwood, and Georgetown in November. But a different team showed up at the Cayman Islands, and ever since, the Revs have played up to their potential while developing a team identity focused on playing 40 minutes of solid defense and organized offense. Credit the coaching staff for turning some early season adversity into valuable learning experiences embraced by the team. The conference season starts on Wednesday, but as this game showed, there is still a lot of work to do.
