GW faces the Fordham Rams at Smith Center in a game rescheduled to circumvent severe weather threats forecast for the end of the weekend. Originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, the game will now take place on Saturday (1-24) following the men’s afternoon contest against Richmond. Since an 8-3 OOC start against a soft schedule, the Rams, who were projected to finish 12th in the A10, could only manage a 1-7 start in conference play, with their sole victory coming against St. Bonaventure. In their most recent outing this past Wednesday, Fordham was defeated by St. Louis in overtime. The Rams’ best player is Alexis Black, who averages 19.4 ppg and 4.0 apg, but she has not played since early January. Ugne Sirtautaite, is the team’s second leading scorer at 7.9 ppg, followed by Ornella Niankan, who chips in 7.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Emma Wilson-Saltos leads the team in rebounding at 6.2 rpg. Although Fordham does not possess a lot of size, they lead the A10 in offensive rebounding at 16.4 per game and are 3rd overall on the glass. As a team, Fordham puts 65.4 points on the board per game, while giving up 64.8 points to their opponents.
After essentially conceding the last game to VCU in the 1st half, GW will be looking to prove that their 2nd half was no fluke. On the defensive side, the Revs have to force Fordham to play half court offense, but must control the defensive boards and limit the Rams’ second chance points. In the 1st half of the VCU game, GW took too many quick shots without running their offense, leaving themselves vulnerable to VCU’s transition offense. The Revs need to get off to a good start, so offensively, GW has to run their sets and establish their inside game early with Lewis and Sims, instead of taking contested perimeter shots. The spacing will help Reynolds and the other perimeter shooters get better looks. Also, look for the bench to bounce back from their least productive game of the season and for Phiri and Theodorsson to come up with some timely plays. If GW can develop some offensive consistency down the stretch, it will translate to a few wins and perhaps better performance in the A10 tourney.
The Revs stay home after this game and host the St. Louis Billikens on Wednesday evening.

Hooray! women win 58-47. I watched the last minute since we were up by 10 and I didn't think I could jinx 10 points worth. Sara Lewis was out - or did I hear that incorrectly?

GW takes 58-47 win over Fordham.
After taking a 12-8 lead in the opening quarter, GW was able to maintain the lead throughout the rest of the game. Loving, filling in for Lewis, scored the first 4 points for GW to lead the way. Although the Revs increased the lead in each subsequent quarter, Fordham was able to scratch to within a single point in the 3rd period, before a GW run pushed the lead back to a 7-point lead. This was a physical defensive battle where neither team shot particularly well. The Rams were led by Lakresha Edwards’ 18 points, including 4-9 from beyond the arc. The rest of the team, however, only managed to hit on 12-42 attempts and Fordham finished at 33% for the game. GW was only slightly better at 38%, but managed to outscore Fordham 12-5 from the free throw line. Reynolds led the way for GW with 14 points, but timely contributions were made by Loving (6 points), Becker (8 points), Sims (8 points), James (7 points), Theodorsson (6 points), Phiri (5 points), and Wilson (4 points).
GW played 4 quarters of solid basketball. There were no major lapses throughout the game and every time the Rams would close in, GW confidently ran the offense, and one player after another would make a key score. The defense was once again strong, but had trouble keeping Fordham’s taller players off the offensive boards in the 1st half. Fortunately, the defense was able to prevent a lot of second chance points. GW did a better job at keeping the Rams off the offensive glass in the 2nd half. Offensively, James did a good job of running the offense, as did Dulin when she came in to relieve her. GW was only 6-18 from beyond the arc, but got a lot of clean looks. There were no specifics on Lewis’ injury(?), but she looked fine as she jogged to the locker room with her teammates at halftime, so hopefully she’ll be back soon.
St. Louis is up next on Wednesday evening at the Smith Center.
