I was there tonight, and am very proud of our team. It feels like having hit bottom, they finally said WTF, let's win this and have some fun. They played loosely in the first half, while URI was a lot tighter and missing alot of shots. While we tightened up in the second half, and probably felt a little chill of deja vu as the score differential tightened, but yet we held it together and toughed out the win. May this represent a turning ofi the corner which will hopefully continue on Friday.. And everyone send healing vibes to Castro so we get him back before the tourney.

Was only able to catch bits and pieces of the game….but from what I saw, we closely resembled the Seattle Seahawks defense in the first half. Great effort. Student section looked virtually empty on ESPN+. We’ve lost that crowd apparently.
Hate it when the $10 Million Man has to take a long ride back to RI with his rat tail between his legs…..😂😂

I thought the same thing but was thinking that maybe that was the year we went from the Eastern 8 to the A-10, but I looked it up and the change of name was 1982

Not sure if this is semantics or what, but at the 9-minute mark, CC says that Bubu had a knee "procedure" but that he's expected to be back.

Thanks jf and Gwmayhem for the nice messages earlier!
Rhody in the first half looked a lot like GW going into the Fordham game. That is, a bit shell-shocked that a key contributor in Tripp was out. There's always an adjustment period playing without an important player. The Revs are used to being without Slim and Bubu for a couple games now, and came out really wanting it.
I had mentioned at the end of the preview that although URI turns people over at high rates, they also turn the ball over a lot themselves. It was good to see GW capitalize on the latter. It's been a while since I last saw guys trying to knock the ball out of the opponent's hands and generate takeaways. It's what McNeese did to us. It's what Dayton did to us. It's what Rhody did a bit to us in the second half. GW looked like they finally came out hungry and wanting to set the tone defensively. That's what it is going to take the rest of the year, with or without Slim and Bubu. I was a bit surprised that the three point shot was de-emphasized in the game compared to the last two, but it was good to see a bit more balance.
Kudos to Luke - he's really stepped up the last couple games and has shown he's more than a back to the basket big. His driving ability to the basket has been showcased and diving for that loose ball at the end was awesome. I still feel the percentages don't really support taking the threes but I can live with two attempts compared to the five he took at St. Joe's. Hunger is also quietly really good at tapping the ball out and creating extra chances on offense. GW is now the top offensive rebounding team in A10 conference games.
Woo was really good again too. When he makes his layups and limits the turnovers, there's not much he can't do. His impact was felt across the box score - 6 boards, 5 assists, 3 steals. A real energy lifter for the team.
Tricky made some big defensive plays and was a bit better staying in front of his man defensively. Was also fantastic on the glass, leading the team in rebounding. When the threes aren't falling, I wish he would drive inside a bit. He did that a couple times but probably could have done it more.
Outside of a forced three, Garrett was much more in sync and looked good out there. Any time he falls down to the ground though I hold my breath. CJ was a bit quiet again, but had a couple nice rebounds defensively.
It definitely seems preferable to let Jean run the show the rest of the year compared to Tre. Aranguren can commit some silly turnovers, but he did have six rebounds, six assists, and got to the basket quite frequently - often before Rhody was set. At some point, Dinkins is going to have a game where he can't miss from 3, but he just wasn't particularly impactful yesterday. No rebounds, no assists but four turnovers. The front end of a 1-and-1 barely hit the front rim down the stretch. The steal he was credited for came from URI literally bouncing the ball to him. I did like the plays setting him up for threes on the wing in the second half. Perhaps there will be more lineups with him off the ball alongside CJ or Jean moving forward.

FWIW, the Buddhist Monks on the Walk for Peace were part of a public event on campus from 5:30-7:30. Imagine that counterprogramming hurt student attendance.

Everybody is wrong. Technically the A-10 was the Eastern Collegiate Basketball League when it was founded in 1975. It began play in 1976 as basketball only and then added other sports the next year to the Eastern Athletic Association which was more commonly referred to as the Eastern 8. The A-10 name was not adopted until 982 following some additions and subtractions of conference members. So if you are asking about the A-10 and its predecessors the answer is 1975-1976 and 50 years but if you are asking precisely about the A-10 it's 1982.
I believe GW is the last original member who has stuck with the A-10 and its predecessors for the entire 50 years. So it makes it a little strange to claim this as the 50th anniversary when there has only been one schoool out of 14 who has been with the A-10 and its predecessors the entire time. Just saying.

Asking the crowd a trivia question and having the answer wrong: another Only at GW moment. I was a student when the Eastern 8 became the Atlantic 10 so I knew that 1986 could not have been correct.
This was a really nice team victory. I kept waiting for Hassan Martin to show up and grab 20 rebounds for URI but he is finally out of eligibility. All you really need to know about the defensive effort was that all 7 GW players who played were credited with at least 1 steal. Impressive three point shooting does not show up every night but good defense almost always keeps a team in the game. In particular. Autry and Marshall stood out as being overly determined to stay with their man (even despite Wu having challenges with Cochran who had his way with most everyone in the second half.)
On offense, there was FAR MORE play in the paint. While the 3's were still not falling at the percentage we would like, the quality of the looks was substantially superior to our past few games. (Not to mention that far fewer were taken.)
Agree that Jean should be the primary point guard as he is more inclined to get others involved than any others I have seen. Worth pointing out that Wu had 5 assists, 1 turnover and 3 steals. He was the consummate glue guy last night. Excited for Luke and at the same time, am realistic in understanding that he is polished enough to take advantage of teams like URI who lack a solid frontcourt and less so against Fordham who can throw a number of quality big men his way. Nevertheless, we need him to come through when he can and last night, he did so in a big way.
GW never trailed in this game and led for all but about 2 1/2 minutes of game action. Well needed win as a five game losing streak heading into the GM game where the Patriots are coming off an upset loss would have been daunting at best. Hopefully, this win coupled with another game at Smith Center gives this team great confidence.

Duquesne wasn't an original ECBL member?

Yes, but they flaked out for a season or two in the 90´s before rejoining. It was around the time conferences like the Colonial and Yankee were making plays for I-AA football (which Duquesne has), if I am not mistaken.

It was good to win, needless to say. And kudos to the team and staff for not folding.
It was interesting to see Rhode Island kind of mirrored us in most of our games.
They were losing 34-18 at the half and seemed lost, but executed a major comeback to within 3 or 4 points.
Maybe even less.
Ran an unstructured offense, well described as "disjointed" by a post above. And when they
could tie or get to 1 point in crunch time of the game. Shot a quick, not particularly good 3, and never
recovered.
Played their way back, but could not get over the hump, much like we often do.

Prior to Eastern Eight was the ECAC. The old EE was a pretty good conference. Great idea which was expanded on later by the Big East. Both leagues contained teams we played pretty frequently. Where's Pitt, Rutgers and West Virgina now? Strange new world.

Correct. I believe it might have been just one season but not completely sure. Could have been 2.

Just listened to CC’s comments (thanks for posting the presser). Made me proud to hear what he had to say about our academics. Especially when he said that our guys go to class. There are teams (looking at you, Big Ten and ACC) where, because of coast-to-coast travel, the players can only attend classes online. His comments gave me perspective that, at least for GW, it’s about more than what happens on the court.
Of course, I’d still like what happens on the court to be good!
