The GW Revolutionaries travel to Rhode Island for their final regular season A10 contest. The Rhode Island Rams currently own sole possession of 1st place in the A10, but that could change with a loss to GW. At 15-2 in the A10 and 24-4 overall, the Rams have exceeded expectations (projected 4th in the A10) with the A10’s best defense (6th in the nation) and a balanced scoring offense. On Wednesday evening, they ran into a determined Richmond squad and were soundly beaten 72-46 on the Spiders’ home court. In that contest, no URI player registered double figures in scoring and the team hit just 27% of their shots from the field. The Rams have a trio of double figure scorers, led by Brooklyn Gray (12.5 ppg and 5.6 rpg), Vanessa Harris (10.8 ppg), and Palmire Mbu (10.6 ppg and 6 rpg). Mbu is also 3rd in the A10 in blocked shots, at 1.9 blocks per game. 6’5” Center Albina Syla adds 8.5 ppg, and a team-leading 6.5 rpg. As a team, the Rams score 68.4 ppg, while giving up only 54 ppg.
URI is 13-1 on their home court, so winning there will be a tall order. In the first meeting between the two teams, GW was able to put 70 points on the board against the Rams, which has only been exceeded by Richmond in A10 play. In that contest, GW went into the 4th quarter with a 2-point lead, but was met with a 22-11 Rams’ response in the final period leading to a 9-point loss. Gray did most of the damage with 23 points, but she got plenty of support from Sophie Vital (19 points), Ines Debroise (16 points), and Syla (12 points). GW countered with Lewis’ 16 points, Wilson (11 points), and Reynolds (10 points). The GW bench outscored the URI subs 21-7. While the teams neutralized each other in terms of turnovers (GW had 9 to URI’s 8), URI managed to capitalize on the GW miscues and outscore the Revs 14-3 on points-off-turnovers. Also, URI held a 19-6 advantage in free throws made. This contest may be more defense-oriented than the first, so GW has to limit the live-ball turnovers on the offensive end and refrain from excessive fouling on the defensive side. Both Lewis’ and Reynolds’ scoring will be needed in order to compete. Another productive game from the bench would also be a huge plus.
Regardless of the outcome, a March 5th date against TBD follows in Henrico, VA,

URI is tied for first place with GMU.
Should both win their last game they will be regular season Co-Champions, but URI would be the #1 A-10 Tourney seed due to their win over GMU.

URI rolls by GW 72-48 to clinch the top seed in the A10 tournament.
Rhode Island raced to an early lead and never looked back. GW came out flat to open the game and URI took advantage to take a 19-10 lead into the second quarter. GW finally got their offense going in the latter part of the 2nd quarter, but it wasn’t enough to counter the Rams hot shooting as URI extended the lead to 40-25 going into the break. The Rams finished the half shooting 62% from the floor, including 4-8 from beyond the arc. Mbu led the way with 15 points, and Gray added 9 points. The pair was a combined 9-11 from the field. GW was led by Reynolds 6 points, while Sims and Loving each added 4 points. The 2nd half went much the way of the 1st, with Mbu and Syla dominating the inside on offense for the Rams. Mbu finished the game with 23 points. Gray followed with 11 points, and Syla finished with 10 points on 5-6 shooting. URI finished the game shooting 61% while building a 48-30 advantage in points-in-the-paint. Reynolds finished with 17 points for GW, but received little help from her team mates.
This game was an exhibition of superior size and talent imposing their physicality on a smaller and less athletic GW squad. GW could not sustain any runs because they had no answer for Mbu, Gray, and Syla on the inside. On the defensive side, the Rams forced GW into tough shots, leaving Lewis (2-10) and Theodorsson (0-6) ineffective for most of the afternoon. GW managed only a single 3-pointer on the day (by Reynolds), and none of the other 7 attempts were close. Luckily, with a 1st round bye already locked up, their was little to lose from the result, and now the team has to put this game behind them. If the current standings read correctly, the Revs will enter the A10 tournament as a number 10 seed, and the team’s focus will turn to post-season play.
#10 GW draws #7 Dayton next Thursday in the A10 tournament. GW has defeated the Flyers twice already this season, but beating a team 3 times in the same season always proves to be extremely difficult.
