Re: GW vs Georgetown Game

I wonder if Aranguren is hurt. Hasn't been on the court for a while.

As per Kerr, head injury will not return. Eye for eye time...

Re: GW vs Georgetown Game

The final score is nothing less than a tragedy.
There is no way GW gets an at-large if the team cannot hit a second half ft, make an open three or guard a guy outside the arc after the other team swings the ball around the court. There is also time to correct all those issue before the Navy game.
There is more talent than last season but there is also less on-court leadership (especially when Aranguren is out).
Witherspoon impressed and the Slovenian can be a real weapon. So there is reason for hope, but also room for concern.
The real test is how well the coaches use the film of tonight to fix things, their ability to do so will determine how hot their seats are...

Re: GW vs Georgetown Game

Came away feeling slightly better after the exhibition this year compared to last year.

Not going to overreact to an exhibition, but just some general thoughts:

- If Omari plays like he did tonight, he makes an all-conference team pretty easily. In a system that emphasizes good shot selection, that will really help him. I wonder if he ends up being better with catch-and-shoot threes than ones off the dribble.

- Dylan looked good against a team that's tall up front. Against A10 and lower competition, he will look even better. Obviously plays with a lot of emotion. As long as that is channeled in a positive way, he could honestly be a dark horse candidate to make an all-conference team. It seems like the team is already executing alley-oops way better with James as the recipient compared to Slim.

- Lovro was fantastic. You can tell he played professionally at a high level and was a primary option because he was pretty polished. It's only a one game sample size, but he could be the best three point shooter by percentage on the team by the end of the year. Great passing instincts as well.

- Promis looked good out there. He often times operated in isolation and looked to score when plays broke down in the halfcourt in HS, but finishing against bigger guys will be more of a challenge in college. Like his game overall. Goal should be all-freshman team.

- Hope Jean is okay. The offense ran much better when he was leading the way, and it looks like he is way more comfortable running the show in year 2. Hope the concussion isn't too bad.

- It didn't feel like Terrance was fully integrated. Only 19 minutes? One game sample size, but it felt like he is more of a situational scorer than a primary option. Defensively, he played in a very slow system at Houston and I feel like adjusting to a faster system may take some time. NC State played fast, but he was not really in their rotation. I don't doubt he will be good defensively no matter what.

- Andrija gets a pass as he was clearly not 100% out there. Would like him to have better positioning in the post.

- I like Felix when he doesn't have to do too much dribbling. Early on he was a bit rough but as the game went on I thought he did some nice things on both ends.

- Andrew was a pleasant surprise. The threes didn't fall, but I liked his effort and he seemed to move the ball well on offense. He found a way to be impactful when the threes weren't falling.

- The same can't be said for Ryder. I felt like Georgetown blew the game open when Frost was in the game in the second half. Defensively, he was a bit rough and offensively I didn't see much outside of missed threes. I fully expect him to have some big games where he can't miss from three, but he needs to find a way to impact the game in games like tonight when the shots don't. CC got him into the game late in both halves in situations where threes were needed, so he will certainly have opportunity moving forward.

- As unfortunately suspected, Jalen was buried by all the newcomers. Thought he was good in one sequence stripping the ball away and leading a fast break though. Malachi only came in when the other bigs were in foul trouble.

- In general, the team had a feeling of "good offensively and meh defensively" somewhat like last year, but I do think interior defense was a bit better. Georgetown wasn't particularly impressive inside the arc. For an almost completely new team, thought the offense looked pretty good.

- I get trying to find advantages in transition on offense, but felt like at times we maybe played a bit too fast. Turnovers weren't egregious which was a plus. A few understandable "not on the same page" ones that will hopefully be cleaned up as the year progresses.

- The defense is going to be a work in progress, but I was hoping for it to be a bit more disruptive. Georgetown was terrible with turnovers against Wake. I don't think we had a single steal before halftime. Outside of a couple exceptions, it still had a feeling that we weren't forcing a team to really have to execute to get a good shot.

- Beat off the dribble too much along the perimeter and put pressure on the frontcourt to make a play. Rebounding was still pretty good overall.

- Not going to overreact on the free throws, but it feels like against good teams GW always forgets how to shoot them. The guards (Witherspoon/N'Landu) need to be at least 75 percent, if not closer to 80.

Re: GW vs Georgetown Game

GWAA being too emotional.  We played them even with Aranguren, lost without the guy who holds the team together.

What I saw is a team that was big and physical enough to play with Georgetown (last year, they were bigger).  Our rebounding was really good, especially when Aranguren played.  Everyone chipped in.

We also do have problems with turnovers (though mostly cleaned that up in the second half) and outside shooting.  And let’s hope the FT shooting was first game jitters.

I think we will be as advertised - improved defense, inconsistent offense - but this team will look very different in 2 months than it does now.

As for players:

- Lovro was a revelation. Really good all around.  Everything if hoped he’s be.  Can shoot, pass, rebound, and start the break.  Needs to be a little more aggressive with his defense.  If he keeps this up, he’ll he called Love-Ro.

- Aranguren looked like himself until the injury. It’s clear he settles the team down.  Our sets were better with him.

- Promis had a really good debut. Seemed to get down on on himself for missing those late FTs, but I don’t think anyone expected a true freshman to hang 14 on Georgetown almost all going hard to the basket.  Can’t remember when we last had a guard as fast as him.  The freshman turnovers will be an issue at time, and he needs to work on his shot, but you can’t help but be happy with how he looked.  He’ll be a factor.

- Dylan James did as expected.  He battled hard on defense, and was a high flyer throwing down the alley oop. What surprised me was his passing, with his interior dimes early on. He’ll do well in the A10, expecting a double figure scorer consistently without being a primary option.

- Arcenaux also as advertised. Excellent defense on the wing.  Didn’t give us much on offense, but Im sure he’ll have better games.  Didn’t feel like he played much second half, for whatever reason.

- Witherspoon was also very positive.  Shot it well.  I suspect the games we struggle is when his shooting is off, but he looked big, physical, and skilled.  Very happy he is a Rev.  probably will be our leading scorer. I’ll also add the combo of Spoon and Arceneaux is long and athletic. They are going to overwhelm some teams with their defense.

- Kossaras could be a good bench player, but seemed a bit raw. Rushed his shots and they were flat. The one he took his time had more arc and was a swish.  He seems to have defensive potential, but he seemed a step behind the Georgetown movement.  Needs work, but could be a good bench player.

- Vukovic had a game to forget. I’m hoping he hasn’t practiced much because of the ankle injury that kept him out last weekend, but he was slow and overmatched all game.  Didn’t rebound, didn’t do too much on D besides be big, and wasn’t an offensive factor. There were a few times where he had a smaller guy pinned down low and we didn’t give him the ball. Need to better recognize those situations.   I know he’s a better player than what he showed tonight.

- Frost is there to be a shooter, but went 0-4 tonight. Probably rushing in his first game for us.  Was a little overmatched defensively too. Wouldn’t shock me if he comes out and hits 4 or 5 threes in one of our first couple games despite his game today.

- Phillips also here to hit threes, but he was 0-3 - though late in second half he had two good looks go in an out. You can tell, though, it’ll be hard for him to defend against some matchups, though he seemed like a smart player who hustles.

- Rougier-Roane didn’t play much but he did have one nice rebound in traffic.

- I don’t remember Malachi playing, but box score gives him an assist.

All in all, we have some quality players and the team should figure out its identity over the next two months, while beating up on some smaller teams while we figure it out.  The challenge will be against the good majors who try to keep us out of the paint because im sure the scouting report will be to make us settle for threes.

Re: GW vs Georgetown Game

Lot's of positives!  Really liked the mix of maturity (although could've done without the momentum killing taunting T,) and the raw energy of rookie Promis.  Was interesting to see his workout videos in high school and that he has an older brother named Gift who helped train him.  He appears to be in great shape.

Getting the negatives out of the way:  First inbounds play after timeout...turnover.  Foul shooting...awful.  We've seen this before.  Yes, nerves can play a role, as well as spiraling loss of confidence. Would love to know how CC addresses this.  There are ways to fix it, or at least improve it.  Nerves also played a role in Ryders and Andrews misses from 3 evidenced by all of them being adrenaline induced long.

Glad CC played with the various rotations showing there's a lot to be optimistic about.  This is a very very good team.  GO REVS!  (Less Patsos more Pops!)

Re: GW vs Georgetown Game

Watching this game at a rehearsal dinner, with no sound, on an iPhone under the table brought the new normal home in technicolor. Recognized no one, knew no one and had no clue who was doing anything!! Like watching a random game. Welcome to the new CBB.

Re: GW vs Georgetown Game

A few things to add:

1) The coaches probably got a lot from this game experience.  Lots of positives along with some glaring things to work on.  (I will not put free throw shooting in this bucket based on a one game sample.)

2) Really liked the rebounding effort and the defensive effort.  Jaland Lowe was the most talented player on either team and he began the game looking unstoppable.  That changed when Promis entered the game and was assigned to him.  Everyone buckle up because we are going to need this guy to play as he gives us more quickness defensively than anyone on the team.  At the same time, he's going to make freshman mistakes.  There was a drive where it looked like he had a clear path to a layup only that hole was plugged so quickly that Promis had nowhere to go with the ball.  In high school, that play ends in a layup maybe 90% of the time.  Not so at this level.

3) This is a natural segue to discuss turnovers.  13 for the game isn't catastrophic and to the team's credit, I found very few to be of the "unforced variety".  Many were the result of Georgetown's ability to plug driving lanes while simultaneously cutting off passing lanes.  When GW players take the ball to the hole, and I love that they'll be doing this a lot because good things often happen, there needs to be a Plan B or even a Plan C when the desired options are unavailable.  Way too many of the turnovers were the result of guys with the ball not knowing what to do when Gtown's defense rose to the occasion.  This will be far less of an issue as we navigate much of the OOC as many opponents will not have these same defensive abilities/personnel as a Georgetown.  However, it's something that should not be ignored at practice.  Play 5 on 6 or 5 on 7 drills to give drivers more experience at making split-second decisions based on what the defense gives.

4) A question that remains unanswered is how Terrance Arceneaux will fit into this offense.  I'll obviously need to see far more of his game but my concerns are that he's not a natural outside shooter nor is he a drive and dish guy.  Seems more like a midrange player which to me says we ought to be running a few set plays for him in the midrange.

5) Really happy to see Omari knock down 4 of 5 threes.  Less happy to see 1 assist in 25 minutes from a guy who had the ball in his hands as much as he did.

6) It looked like Vukovich might have gotten hurt in the first half but played through it.  FWIW, he was not himself and we likely saw a fraction of what he can do.

7) Like most of you, it didn't take long to be in the tank for Lovro.  Not only is he obviously multitalented but he shows real leadership skills on the court.

8) I agree with the assessment that this has the chance to be a true breakout season for Dylan James.  I am already making Zeke Armwood comparisons in my mind which is of course entirely unfair at this point.  Hopefully he learns from the T he received.  It's great to play with emotion but letting your opponent get the best of you mentally is not in his or the team's best interest.

9) It's a shame Jean left with an injury.  4 assists in just 11 minutes.  BTW, Jean was named to the Preseason A10 Third team this morning.  No other GW players made any of the top 3 teams or the all- defensive team.  Use it as motivation.
