Opponent Summary: Like last season, GW opens the 2026-27 season with a home contest against the University of District of Columbia (UDC) Firebirds of the East Coast Conference (NCAA DII). UDC comes in after finishing 11-16 overall and 7-9 in conference, good for a 4th place tie with two other teams. The Firebirds return six players from last year’s squad who averaged at least 15 minutes per game. Aliyah Eason (10.3 ppg) and Le’Asia Todd (9.2 rpg) lead the way for the Firebirds.

About the Game: This contest follows an exhibition game, where the Revs eked out a 72-69 victory against Towson on October 18. For all practical purposes, this game will be an officiated scrimmage allowing both teams to learn as much as they can about their respective teams under game conditions. The Firebirds face a size and talent deficit and will try to rely on their quickness to compensate, but may run out of gas in the late stages of the game. In last year’s contest, only 7 Firebirds got minutes against the Revs. An early DII contest will give Coach G the opportunity to take a longer look at the new players in a game situation, but this game will only provide minimal preparation for what’s coming ahead.

Re: GW versus University of District of Columbia

Final Result: GW cruises past UDC 84-23.

GW’s starting lineup included Bair, Lewis, Newell, Reynolds, and Sims, but GW substituted freely with ten players getting on the court within the first 5 minutes of the game. Both teams were deliberate on offense and neither team developed any offensive rhythm. GW managed to make some shots, but UDC was 0-9 in the 1st quarter and the Revs took a 16-0 lead into the 2nd period. UDC was successful from the free throw line (7-8) and added a couple of hoops, but the Revs still managed to go into halftime with a 35-12 lead. At the half, Reynolds led the Revs with 9 points, while Kristian Harris had 5 points for the Firebirds. GW really picked up their game in the second half. Fueled by their suffocating defense, the Revs forced numerous turnovers that led to easy transition baskets, allowing them to finish the half with a 60% field goal percentage. After going only 2-13 from beyond the arc in the 1st half, GW hit on 6-12 to finish the game. Wilson led all scorers with 16 points; Newell chipped in with 13 points, and Lewis and Reynolds each finished with12 points. 11 of the 12 Revs who played, managed to score in the game. Konate led the Revs on the boards with 6 rebounds, while Bair dished out 6 assists. Harris finished with 9 points for UDC, who had to play without their top scorer in the 2nd half, after she was given her 2nd technical foul and was tossed out of the game early in the second period.

Given the opponent, it’s hard to make any quick assessments about any of the new individuals on the team. The team looks to be much deeper than last year’s squad, and to their credit, GW’s defense did not let up for the entire game, and as predicted, the Firebirds ran out of gas. But, outside of the lack of height, which may or may not be a big factor, things look promising for this year’s Revs.

Last year, after a comfortable win versus UDC to open the season, the Revs succumbed to the Temple Owls’ pressure defense in the next game and got soundly beaten in Philly 86-50. Following this opening day match up against the same Division II squad, GW faces potentially their toughest opponent of the regular season on the road against a West Virginia team that was ranked 24th in the nation in the initial AP Coaches poll. We’ll learn a lot more about this team after that contest later this week.
