Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Just a quick update:

It was earlier reported that Yuta was injured in practice (ankle). The good news is that he's now fit to play. Earlier this week, Japan split a pair of "Friendlies" (exhibition games) against New Zealand. Yuta did not play in the first game (Japan win) out of caution, but started and played 10 minutes inn the second game (Japan loss) and scored 6 points.

Argentina is also involved in Friendlies this week. So far, they have a loss to Brazil and a win over Montenegro. Pato has played in both games, but has not been a big impact. They have another game tomorrow against France.

Next up after that - Japan versus Argentina in a Friendly on August 22. The World Cup starts on August 31.

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Earlier today, Argentina beat Japan 108-93 in their Friendly. Details are sparse, but the game was ultra-competitive until the last 4 minutes or so, when Japan got shut down. I do know that Pato had 11 points, and was 3-3 from beyond the arc. He also had a critical block that led to a demoralizing 3 pointer from Argentina. One article did mention that Yuta led a third quarter surge for Japan, but beyond that no detail. Hachimura led Japan with 23 points.

Will add details if forthcoming.

Could you imagine at the time that 3 players from the same GW team could end up being among the top 5 players in their entire countries? (Larsen is arguably the second best player on Denmark).

This is cool:

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Yuta emphatic dunk and next play, Yuta 3

Pato 3 and a block.  He scored all his points in the first half.

Looks like Yuta (#12) finished with 13 points and not much else

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

That may be the best picture in the history of photography (topped only, perhaps, by Dwight Clark leaping for The Catch). A blow up of that should replace the blank walls inside the Smith Center.

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Japan beat Germany 86-83 earlier today. Great effort by the Akatsuki Five.

Yuta's line was 20 pts, 6 rebs, and 2 stls.; with several clutch plays down the stretch.

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Some highlights.  Steal and FTs by Yuta to seal it.

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Today, Japan lost a close game to Tunisia, 78-76. Japan chose to rest Rui and starting PG, so they were a little shorthanded against a really big Tunisia line-up. Yuta led the way for Japan with 17 pts and 4 rebs.

Without question, the best assist of the day:

Japan's Friendly schedule is complete. On Tuesday, Argentina plays Spain in a Friendly.

The World Cup starts next Saturday (8-31). Argentina plays South Korea. On Sunday (9-1), Japan will take on Turkey. You can watch all World Cup games on ESPN+. Unfortunately, because of the time difference, most games are played while we are sleeping. The good news is that all games are available on demand, so you can watch them after you wake up.

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

In their final tune-up before the World Cup, Argentina fell to Spain 84-76. Spain was led by Ricky Rubio's 25 pts. Argentina played without starting PG (Campazzo) who has a sprained ankle, and Spain was without Marc Gasol, who was sidelined with an undisclosed illness. Pato has a strong all around game, and finished with 11 pts and 5 rebs.

From this point on, all games "count". Argentina and Japan have their challenges, but they have shown that they can compete with strong teams.

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Round 1 first game wrap-up: A tale of two teams.

Argentina easily beat S. Korea. Garino blended in well with a very experienced veteran team that was clicking on all cylinders. He had 6 pts, despite very few 2nd half minutes.

Japan was totally over matched by Turkey, both experience wise and in physicality. Japan could never fully recover from a bad 1st quarter, where they were blitzed by a well prepared Turkish team. The Turkish NBAers (Ilyasova and Osman) were to much for Japan's youth and inexperience. Yuta finished with 11 pts. in a scrambling effort.

Next up - Argentina faces Nigeria on Labor Day, and Japan will try their luck with the Czech Republic (who lost to Team USA earlier today).

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Japan lost to Czechia handily.  Yuta with 15 (on 12 shots) & 5.  Looks like turnovers and FT shooting were problems for Japan.

Argi beat Nigeria behind 17 & 7 from Pato.  He also added three steals and four (!) blocks.

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Yuta´s next game is against a USA that should have lost to Turkey (fouling a guy taking a desperate three with 0.1 sec to play in regulation and then missing FOUR STRAIGHT free throws in the final 9 secs of OT?!?!?!). Game tips off at a very reasonable 0830 Eastern on Thursday.

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Argi goes 3-0 with a win over Russia.  Pato had a meh game and went 2-8, but his makes were an alley-oop to start the scoring and a dunk to close the game.

Japan playing against the US now.   Video link on FIBA site.  NBA audition for Yuta too.

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Well, looks like Japan has much to work on between now and next year´s Olympics. 9pts, 3 boards and 2 assists for Yuta, he had the most mins for Japan which also means he had a team-worst +/- of -49 (a meaningless stat when your team loses by 53).

Pato and Argentina next play tomorrow at 8a.m. Eastern against Venezuela in the second round.

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Garino had 10 points and a team-best +/- of +17 as Argentina dusted aside Venezuela 87-67 to book a spot in the quarterfinals. Argentina play a pretty meaningless final group match against tournament Cinderella story Poland at 9am Eastern on Sunday.

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Another 9 points for Pato (played just 20 mins) as Argentina finish the group stages undefeated by beating Poland 91-65. Up next is a quaterfinal against Serbia at 8am Eastern on Tuesday when the tournament switches from pools to elimination games.

Re: GW Alums at World Cup (Pato v Yuta)

Interestingly, for the second straight game, Pato's points came in surges when needed most. After being scoreless in the first half (only took one shot), he came alive in the third quarter when Poland made a move. In a furious few minutes, he scored nine consecutive points, and then finished off with a beautiful assist to Scola. At that point, the game was effectively over, and Pato was rewarded with a rest for the remainder of the game.
