The 2020-21 KenPom Preseason Rankings are out!
A10:
#45 - St. Louis (Off Rtg: 70th, Def Rtg: 25th, Pace: 281st) The highest team on the list, think they should be a bit higher. +17
#49 - Dayton (Off Rtg: 21st, Def Rtg: 80th, Pace: 265th) Their historically great offense takes a slight step back.
#62 - Richmond (Off Rtg: 42nd, Def Rtg: 76th, Pace: 133rd) Even sans Sherod, the Spiders should be a lot higher.
#76 - St. Bonaventure (Off Rtg: 48th, Def Rtg: 98th, Pace: 287th) Osun staying healthy will raise the defensive ceiling.
#80 - Davidson (Off Rtg: 61st, Def Rtg: 99th, Pace: 324th) Don't buy the top 100 defense, but we'll see.
#84 - Duquesne (Off Rtg: 78th, Def Rtg: 91st, Pace: 213th) Seems about right, solid across the board.
#97 - VCU (Off Rtg: 150th, Def Rtg: 68th, Pace: 94th) Seems a lot based on program consistency. I could see the Rams being closer to 125th.
#98 - Rhode Island (Off Rtg: 112th, Def Rtg: 97th, Pace: 60th) A bit of a wildcard, transfers could make this team rise or fall a lot.
#112 - George Mason (Off Rtg: 119th, Def Rtg: 108th, Pace: 232nd) Think their defense is slightly worse than that.
#125 - Massachusetts (Off Rtg: 106th, Def Rtg: 146th, Pace: 198th) A pretty sizable jump, although defense will need to improve.
#151 - La Salle (Off Rtg: 180th, Def Rtg: 140th, Pace: 118th) Sounds about right, although I could see them falling.
#160 - St. Joe's (Off Rtg: 125th, Def Rtg: 228th, Pace: 21st) Seems like a bit too big of a jump from last year imo. The Hawks are up 100 spots, by far the largest in the league.
#166 - Fordham (Off Rtg: 306th, Def Rtg: 78th, Pace: 336th) Cue the "Fordham too high" chants. A 79 spot jump from last year.
#193 - George Washington (Off Rtg: 215th, Def Rtg: 182nd, Pace: 297th) Many analytic sites don't seem to like us coming into the year (since it is a bit based on recent history, that makes sense). We should hopefully finish higher than this.
There were 7 A10 teams in the top 100 last year; there are 8 in the preseason this year. The league is definitely on the upswing. Most teams changed around 40 spots or so from the 19-20 season.
OOC Opponents (will update as we find out more of our schedule):
#189 - Navy (Off Rtg: 226th, Def Rtg: 164th, Pace: 352nd)
#289 - William & Mary (Off Rtg: 217th, Def Rtg: 334th, Pace: 223rd)
#337 - Hampton (Off Rtg: 312th, Def Rtg: 347th, Pace: 44th)
Other Notables:
#16 - Virginia (Off Rtg: 75th, Def Rtg: 1st, Pace: 357th)
#51 - Maryland (Off Rtg: 47th, Def Rtg: 57th, Pace: 264th)
#86 - Georgetown (Off Rtg: 89th, Def Rtg: 86th, Pace: 57th)
Newcomers:
#186 - UC San Diego (Off Rtg: 196th, Def Rtg: 195th, Pace: T-148th)
#291 - Bellarmine (Off Rtg: 276th, Def Rtg: 287th, Pace: T-148th)
#321 - Dixie State (Off Rtg: 300th, Def Rtg: 328th, Pace: T-148th)
#335 - Tarleton State (Off Rtg: 322nd, Def Rtg: 337th, Pace: T-148th)
Highest/Lowest Ranked Teams:
#1 - Baylor (Off Rtg: 3rd, Def Rtg: 8th, Pace: 307th) - Scott Drew has been quietly fantastic putting the Bears on the map as a true championship contender the past couple years.
#357 - Mississippi Valley State (Off Rtg: 355th, Def Rtg: 357th, Pace: 1st) - Unfortunately, the Delta Devils find themselves in the basement for yet another year, but Lindsey Hunter has potential in his second year as coach. Maybe slowing down the pace a bit would help their absolutely porous defense.

Forgive my ignorance but there is a "Tarelton State"? And how the bleep does a school get off being called "Dixie State" in this day and age?
In a normal year, those rankings would make the A10 a one-bid conference.

To the extent that KenPom data factors into at-large selections, I'd say this is terrible news for the conference. While there may be more parity than ever before, it would behoove the conference to have at least 1-2 teams sniffing around the Top 25. I wonder if we've ever had a year where Ken's preseason best ranking for an A10 school was #45? Plus, if the number of opportunities for the conference's better teams to play against top 25 schools from major conferences becomes more limited than ever before, which would be completely understandable, I would agree with GWAA that this has the makings of an automatic qualifier only league. Let's hope other metrics start off SLU, Dayton and Richmond more like in the 30's and they play their way into the 20's or better (except when they play GW of course).

if you didn’t know, dixie state is utah. for some reason part of the state is called dixie. still controversial.

Mark my words.... GW will be in the top7 if we have an entire season.

Optimism is great, but every year, people claim the team will be much better than expected, than complain the team was nowhere near the record they claimed the team should have had (and blame Coaching)
Overstating expectations, only to complain about "Under-achievement" (and I am well aware this is mostly one guy using a parade of fake identities to do so, so by people I really mean one person) is pretty lame. Just let the rebuild play out, we have a ton of work to do, and we shall get there, but its going to take time.

In response to the Dude, since he seems to be referring to my comments about expecting GW will be better than expected:
First, i am not attempting to cover my identity by signing in as anyone other than AT Hiker. More importantly, based on a solid understanding of the roster, the quality of our coaching staff and the 8 new players joining the team this year, i expect great improvement. And certainly Ken Pomeroy's prediction we will finish last is laughable.

A few updates...Charlotte has a preseason KenPom ranking of 172 and Hampton comes in at 336.
I thought I recall that our pre-pandemic schedule was to have included road games at Tennessee (#19) and at Virginia Tech (#32). Am guessing that each will not be played in 2020-21.

GENTLEMEN, STOP THE BULLSH*T. ENOUGH.
I've deleted about a half dozen posts from this thread. Stop the personal attacks. Stop the taunting. Stop it all. If you have something to say about GW Hoops, awesome.
Otherwise, shut the f*ck up.
Thank you.

Dear Administrator:
Thanks for your warning about improper posts.
as to why we aren't playing Tennessee and Va Tech: all of our non-conference games are at places where we or our opponent can travel back and forth via bus in the same day. Under any circumstances it makes sense to play local teams. I remember years ago when Georgetown scheduled a game at Oregon and we were better than the Ducks. How about playing a team two miles away instead of 2,500 miles.
