Are we going to see more defense next week? Pressure? The coach is preaching more shots per game. Certain we may feel our way out of the gate, but it would nice to see the pace pick up right from the start.
I would like to see us go big with Maceo at the 2 for a run of two to four minutes with a center and two stretch 4's. I would also like to see another body hit the O-Glass, this season.
Secondly, if we are in a man D, we had better be awake for backdoor cuts.
Also, I understand that Matt aspires to play 3,but Navy makes the point to me that he may be much more valuable to us at the 4 for stretches of games (as well, in the A10) . I could see Matt working a high and low post set of offense as the other players pull their defenders away from the paint. I don't think we can make a meal of one in and 4 out.
Navy will be a good test!

Amen, baby.
No idea if we will be as good as I think we can be, but I do believe we'll be entertaining and we're only getting better. And at the risk of sounding like a GW Athletic Department tool, Raise High!

If last year's opener was any indication (and it may very well not be), all five starters played 20 minutes, a bench player played 32 minutes, a 7th player played 10 minutes and three more players played at least 6 minutes.
Can you name last year's starting lineup in the opener? I'll give you a moment or two, and major kudos if you can get this right.
Am hoping to see a very long bench in the OOC games which is all but sure to shorten come conference time. That means the freshmen B's all get some run and it would also likely mean that mayhem gets back to what we thought this might mean (pressing and trapping) and not last year's substitute definition (driving three point shooters off of the arc).
Here's your answer: Maceo Jack, Jamison Battle, Mezie Offerum, Arnaldo Toro and Justin Mazzulla. JNJ off the bench to play 32 minutes (second to Maceo's 36), Justin Williams plays 10, Armel Potter had 2 assists in his 8 minutes, and Ace and Javier played 6 minutes apiece. JNJ would go on to start in 26 of his 31 games while Armel started in 20 of 28. It was 1 of 3 starts on the season for Mezie and 1 of 10 starts for Arnaldo.

100% agree on the posts above, especially that Matt seems better at the 4 than 3.
I totally forgot Mezie started, although GWmayhem I believe JNJ did start and Jamison came off the bench in the Towson game because I remember Justin playing off the ball in the few games he suited up for us last year. What's even crazier is that Armel was a healthy scratch in the third game against American before becoming our leading scorer! I don't think I've that many lineup changes as there were last year. I would hope that the starting lineup remains relatively consistent this year, barring injuries. JC has mentioned several times this offseason that he doesn't like changing the starting lineup at all, but last year was always going to be one where he had to see what he had. I am very curious to see what lineups we see over the course of the game. The scrimmage has me excited too see all the combinations we can put out there.
I definitely hope to see a bit more usage of zone this year, at least more than just 1% of our possessions (especially against a team like Navy that isn't very perimeter-oriented). The A10 isn't quite as bad as the AAC when it comes to three point marksmanship, but it's still pretty bad with a few exceptions. In terms of defensive shot quality, we ranked 293rd last year which isn't very good at all, partly because we gave up easy looks near the rim even after running guys off the line. Assuming our revamped frontcourt provides a bit more rim protection, hopefully we can improve there.
Definitely hope to see more pressure as well. One of the big marks against us last year was the fact that we were 13th in the league forcing turnovers despite our system being tabbed "Mayhem", and ranked 334th in the country in turnovers forced, which is far and away the worst in JC's career. I doubt we will ever finish top 25 like many of his MSM teams did because A10 guards won't cough up the rock as much as NEC guards, but we should hopefully be at least around national average here. Also, we weren't necessarily terrible in terms of turnover rate on offense, but JC's teams are usually a bit more sound there than last year's team as well.
We did rank 88th in shot quality offensively which is a pretty good sign, and I'd expect the 194th eFG% to improve with better personnel to fit the system. Last year's team managed to get to the line a lot more than I actually expected given JC's history. We finished around national average in FT rate (172nd) which is JC's best finish to date. Although signs seems to point to launching from three a bit more, I hope it's not at the expense of getting to the line, especially when we have guys like Maceo and Jamison who are near automatic from there.
Regarding offensive rebounding, I doubt we ever see a commitment there based on the way JC plays. Our increased height as a team should help to a degree by default, but JC teams have never finished better than 182nd in offensive rebounding rate in his history. The other seasons his teams have ranked 309th (last year), 310th, 341st, 327th, 301st, 282nd, and 272nd. That 309th ranking last year came with a dominant presence like AT (even though I know he wasn't fully healthy last year). There is generally a trade-off between limiting transition opportunities and crashing the glass and it appears JC leans towards the former. That is not to say maybe we cannot send maybe another guy towards the glass, but analytics favor getting back on defense rather than crashing the grass offensively. It is interesting to note that JC's best finish in defensive rebounding was last year where we finished 126th, pretty good overall.

DMVPiranha, I was relying upon the ESPN.com box score to provide me with the starting lineups.
Was I at the game? Yes.
Did a Towson student when asked by me where the arena was indicate that I should make a right turn when in reality, this should have been a left turn, thereby causing me to miss the opening tip? Also Yes.

I’m split. NCAAMB is not essential and I sure don’t want anyone to catch COVID. But if GW is playing I want to see all the new guys and who makes a leap in improvement. Can GW shoot and can they stop penetration? Those are big questions for me.

Last year we were slow and we could not defend...not even a little. We were also fundamentally unsound (look at those assist to turnover numbers). Those are my big questions. I think we are okay shooting and rebounding.

I look forward to the different “5” we will play each game. In the past couple of years, we have had a very thin bench so if someone was struggling, we really did not have any real options.
This year, if Battle struggles, maybe Seymour is hot. If Bishop is having a bad game, we have Byron, Jameer or other options to pick up the minutes.
Should be a fun year.
