Ugh.  End of season.

If hutch’s tie up was a foul, so was the defense on Bishop.

But regardless James missing twice at the buzzer seems a sad way a great scorer to end his career, even if that’s what he did in end of game situations for his whole career.

Hard Agree and dammed disappointed for the guys that they didn’t get 1 tourney win

Give me a F’ing break.  They’ve let WAY more contact go on our contested layups. Just a horrible homer call late in the game.

That’s the problem with the clear NCAA direction to allow contact in the act of shooting. If it does get called late it’s gonna be a departure from the way the game till than has been called.

Now let’s get 2 or 3 in the tourney!

Poog, I'm a firm believer that a scholarship should be a mutual four-year commitment between a coach, a student-athlete, and a university. Those days are gone. There has been no shortage of tough conversations between GW coaches and members of the men's basketball roster that essentially say that the coaching staff believes their best days will be spent elsewhere.

In my heart, Poog, your comment is noble and right. In my head, I hope we won't be so naive as you propose as the gap between the haves and have-nots continues to widen.

Yeah….pining for the past and lamenting it isn’t going to bring it back. The fact is, today you have to be ready to manage a roster - both proactively and reactively.  I don’t mind transparency in this area. When Pitino took over St. John’s  he was very clear  at his presser when he took the job that “ a lot of players probably won’t be back.”  It may not be pretty, but that’s what it is today. I do think it would be fairer to tell players we offered you a scolly and we’ll stand by it if you want to stay here and matriculate, but it won’t be considered an athletic scolly and you won’t be playing basketball. Seems to me (rules permitting) that’s a fair was to give some ability for decisioning to the student athlete. So Keegan - you want to stay here for a GW degree, we’re all for that. If you want to go play basketball at  Central Connecticut St?  That’s fine too.

HARD AGREE Alum1-If the “adults” esp the NCAA hadn’t so consistently made then the players walk the purity plank while they got paid cash I’d feel ambivalent.

But if anyone’s concern is there will be a lot of broken hearts and promises before this gets even a little sorted you’ll get plenty of agreement from me.

This is not a rant. Injuries and where GW is in the rebuild means there’s no point in getting mad. I’m so tired of GW not running an offense where the ball does some work, no defense, no rebounding.

Switched to the game on USA,Jealous on Bonaventure fans

I’m baffled. Last year they played like they had roles and a plan. This year I can’t even tell what they’re supposed to do? Can you all tell what Caputo wants them to do?

Liked to me like Jun was holding his crotch amd groin. Not sure what’s worse, the hammy or a groin muscle pull?

I certainly have been critical, but not today. The guys played with passion and we just aren’t deep enough to absorb the loss of Buchanan for half the game. I have to take a deep breath to say this, but Stretch too. Without those two, watching Loyola under their basket was like watching Shaq playing against a high school team. They were just walked all over us. And just for fun they’d bury threes.

This had zero to do with coaching. What was Chris to do? Who should he have put in?  He got 100% out and d these guys today. He’s just limited by what he has.

100% What options did they have at the end! None IMO

The announcer just said UMASS’ NIL has “done a great job procuring talent.”

That’s literally what NiL collectives are supposed to be forbidden from doing.  The whole system is totally broken, probably just need to drop the Nail charade and just let teams pay players if teams are going to violate the rules so openly.

Caught that too. Gross.

Another thing the announcer said which I agree with is how the NET really values running up the score. No reason Cohen and some of the other starters for UMass should’ve been out there as long as they were.

BUT UMASS did not run up the score

Boy, do I respect what James Bishop almost always gives the team. This team needs to score 80 to win; so today is not a surprise. Big challenge. How do they rebound?

After 6 years of unwatchable basketball I’m thrilled. With the specter of NIL and possible unlimited transfers I’m trying to enjoy a team that can  and needs to score 80

and i believe part of this is OOC scheduling

I WISH THE OOC schedule was a driver because that would mean students and others are college basketball fans in general. They are not.

Everyone I take to a game LOVES the venue in terms of sight lines, ease of moving around and vibe when its closer to full. But, they'd sooner by a new car than purchase a ticket or even watch a game on TV.

What is going to get harder is attracting and keeping what we think of as A10 level talent as the NIL $$ snowball gets bigger. Logically with all the money the "adults" have been raking in I can't begrudge the players; however I'd be smart to focus on this year, bc the level of change year to year is sure to be jarring and may kill my fandom all together.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the home schedule as a factor in the low attendance.  Not sure how this is fixable, but people will also go to a sporting event to see the visiting team play, and at least this season, we have had no opponants worth the price of admission.

Yeah I don't think it's fixable.  Even the A10's best teams are struggling to schedule home games like GW could do under the Lonergan years.

Dayton: UNLV (and it was cancelled)
VCU: Memphis, Temple
SLU: Utah State
Duquesne: Princeton

That's pretty much it.  A10 fans better get used to seeing a lot of Patriot League, CAA, and MVC schools or start travelling with the team on the road.

CORRECT 509! That's why the A-10 instead of being a 3-bid league is, sadly, now the best 1-bid league.

Until this new practice facility gets built, and until GW has a collective that can scrape together six figures for elite talent when opportunity strikes, I think that we need to recalibrate expectations for the foreseeable future.

Each of our most successful past coaches over the last 30 years had a unique ability to do a certain something that helped them punch well above their weight class. Mike Jarvis was on the leading edge of recruiting foreign talent. Karl Hobbs (with Steve Pikiell and Darrell Brooks in particular) was able to polish diamonds in the rough when the A-10 was on a downswing. Mike Lonergan kept a great class at home, leveraged our history as a good home for foreign talent, and was able to promise guys like Cavanaugh, Creek and Armwood that he could Coach them up to elite professional levels despite taking a "step down" in conference. More importantly, they were all able to promise guys the ability to play in DC and a pretty raucous gym when things were rolling.

Now, I'm not sure how many guys are thinking in four-year increments, and now that the payments are above the table, there are fewer players thinking about their "college experience." Coach Caputo ticks off all the intangible boxes: he has the local and regional experience, he's an entertaining interview on radio and TV, and he seems to work relentlessly.

But I think the money talks now louder than ever, and I think we need to tailor our expectations and evaluations accordingly.

Sadly 100%

Reading this thread makes me miss the years of 2016 and prior even more. Hard to believe it's been 8 long years with the dumpster fire still simmering.
Before we declare this miserable saga over, let's see how this year progresses. Winning 10 A-10 games in a weak conference last year say's nothing. Winning 11 OOC games with our pathetic schedule this year say's nothing. The conference is still weak this year (based on A-10 recent history) but at least we can comparer ourselves to comparable teams rather than the Alcorn St and UMES teams we scheduled this year.

On a side note, the coach at Siena is struggling now that everyone JC brought there is gone. Reminds me of Mojo. I was very happy that our program hired CC instead of Carm.

EVERY DAY it was the right move! Last year was a team of mostly inherited players, right? They were so much more organized on the court. The players seemed more energized, engaged and happy to be playing for each other. (I’m confident that CC would have created a better role for Jameel.)

Agreed that in a pre-NIL, wild Wild West transfer environment another year for Jamison would have been justifiable. However, full marks to Tonya for breaking with GW’s too slow to act past.

Still having followed this team since 1980 I’d be an idiot not to agree that the proof will be in how the conference season plays out.

Here’s the difference for this fan. For the first time since 2016 I’m actually a little excited, nervous for the first conference game.

the Big 5 classic triple header has delivered. Drexel beat Nova, LaSalle at the buzzer beats Penn with a tough shot in OT. Temple StJoes next. Been great even though it’s on Peacock and not at the Palestra.
