two followups:

obviously the withers twins.

i don’t think the tallents  played together in high school. bob and mike were three years apart. unless mike played freshman year, which is possible, they wouldn’t have overlapped. they played together at gw because bob sat out a year, narrowing the gap to two years.  pat was much younger.

as is true with any ranking, you have to define your criteria. if we’re talking about athletes who achieved most in their field, then red, yinka and jj certainly belong.

on the other hand — if we are trying to identify best athletes — we would probably come up with a few others.

two names that haven’t been mentioned, even though they were two sport participants, are pat tallent and dirkk surles. both great athletes.

if we are looking for athletes who achieved some fame at the pro level, can we include chuck stobbs?  he never played at gw but he coached the baseball team for several years.

don’t underestimate gimelstob as a recruiter.  brown, oreilly, both websters, dawson, woodside, nate williams and more. couldn’t keep some of the best but he could certainly recruit them.

I think you have to add Bob Tallent to list of outstanding transfers. Probably Magid as well.

Biggest loss was most likely Bernard Woodside.

I know, different eras.

Reality check on two unrelated issues;

1.  George Washington was not the university’s founder. He said we should have a national university in the nation’s capital but he was dead for over twenty years when  Columbian College was founded.

2.  Lloyd Elliott was hardly a bigot. He had taught at Cornell and been president at U of Maine. Very low key, tried to avoid publicity, sometimes too slow to accept change, but basically a good, kind man.

Don’t get me started on Luther Rice.

interesting  but very frequently a transfer goes to school where, according to rumor, the player had a good relationship with a coach, presumably someone he met
while being recruited in hs (could have been in aau but timetable is same).  hard to believe college coaches from big and small programs can afford to give up scouting and even recruiting totally
