I’ve been hearing the same thing every year since GW fired Mike Lonergqn.   The university is  perpetually telling us that they’re stepping-up their commitment to the program, and then they don’t.  It’s this continuum of unfulfilled promises that’s  particularly insulting.

Merrick, you're not alone. I feel the same way. My belief is that unless there's a requirement players stay for more than a year (or longer), this is not going to work out well for most fans, coaches, non-Power Five schools and their professional student athletes.  However, I do believe that people who love to be involved with college basketball programs, gamblers, and a small number of fans who don't care about continuity and quality of play will support no matter what.

GW Men's Hoops » 2025 Portal Info » 3/27/2025 9:09 pm

College basketball is now professional sports with all the players 1 year contracts.

Mid majors lke GW have to scrounge around the portal and pray for crumbs or for a good player wanting to reset for a year before moving on again.

I have no idea why anyone would donate money to support a team like GW anymore because almost none of the players give a damn about the school, the free education or the fans.  Exactly why should a GW fan be loyal to a team when there is no reciprocity?

GW Men's Hoops » The Hypothetical Gambling Thread » 2/03/2025 9:04 pm

Not having seen all the teams, but knowing we blew out Dayton and watched them on TV a few times and not having been impressed, I'd still take Dayton/VCU @+150.  What are the odds if it's VCU vs the Field?

It's not difficult to embrace the notion that the money should always be grabbed when presented.  As I mentioned, if the Castro family isn't living comfortably and can really use the money right now, then of course they should accept a bigger offer.  There is no telling when an athlete's career may come to an end.

That all said, Rising's points on development are valid.  If Rafael's ambition is to play professionally, he may be better served playing 30 minutes a game at GW then running the risk of playing 8 minutes a game at Providence or somewhere comparable.

Even if a player's family is living comfortably, and all other things being equal, I can think of no reason to stay with a program if another is offering considerably more compensation. I feel this is especially true for mid-major players.  There's almost not downside to taking more money.  You might play fewer minutes but it won't hurt as long as you're not destined for the NBA.  And, if you're destined to play in the NBA, then you're going to play in important role for the better program and make more money at the same time.  NIL has changed things. I don't think it's good for us fans, but it's pretty good for the players, for the moment.  I don't have a problem with that but do think college ball is a whole lot less fun these days and that could eventually lead to a decline in the sport.  Some people think greed is good.

GW Men's Hoops » A Case Against The Portal » 1/27/2025 10:21 pm

If I were Castro, and if I could get a lot more money somewhere else, I'd leave without a second thought. I wouldn't care at all about how many minutes I get at a more prominent program.  After he's done with college, I think Castro's earning capacity wouldn't be significantly less even if he didn't get the same minutes/numbers with a bigger program.  Additionally, and I hate to say it, but look at Darren.  After least year's huge season, he came back and, well, he isn't exactly lighting it up.  This year's performance isn't going to get Darren any NBA looks and it's not going to help him get a big contract anywhere.  You think he's not regretting taking more money from a big program now?  I bet he's sick about it (assuming he had bigger offers).

The way the rules work now, I think 9 times out of 10, A-10 players should grab the money while it's available.

BGF, thank you for all your work transitioning the old board to your new board and also for all the work you did to try to keep the discussion civil and productive.  Also, good luck with the job move, which I hope goes smoothly and successfully.

0509, thank you for taking on the effort to keep this board going and providing a place for people to come to enjoy GW basketball and for reading and learning what's new with the program.

In the past 10 years, the only player who left GW that I was sad to see go was Jamison Battle.  Regarding Max, it seemed to me that he was unhappy when things got tough this season, so I think he's made the right move for all involved,  I'm sure he'll find another opportunity and I hope it works out well for him.  Best of luck to Max.

Not sure I agree. With James leaving, we have an opening for a high scoring, high usage guard.

CC's done a nice job recruiting (and retaining) combo guards already.  Assuming Jun, Jacoi, Max, Trey and Garrett all come back next season, and assuming Ty joins the team, I think another guard is the last thing we need to worry about now.

FQ, we're not.  But you know what?  We're also not supposed to serve as the board troll either.  We're not supposed to repeatedly make our points with no other agenda but to annoy.

And this season, I barely responded to him at all.  Because I was told that if I just ignored him, he would go away or stop being such a nuisance.  How'd that work out?

So yes.  After saying the same shit again and again only to be wrong about it, you bet he's going to hear about it.  Not to worry though.  He's probably gone crying to Barry by now and this post will likely be removed before GW tips off today.

Gwmayhem, as you know, the reason I don't visit or post to this site very much is because, IMO, The Dude has ruined it.  His posts are like a bird-droppings splattered all over a nice car.  I think his posts are mindless, often provocative and usually uninformed, intended primarily to troll.

I think the current board administrator has done a nice thing by maintaining the forum but it's apparently too difficult to stop the Dude (and his multiple personalities) from making it a mess.  I think you're right for calling him out as I know you're trying to make this a better and more informed place for GW fans.  However, I think the current management doesn't care if The Dude craps all over his site.  Or maybe he considers The Dude a valued board member of (doubtful, but possible if he likes hundreds of repetitive and stupid posts).

Oscar, like I said, anything is possible.  But, can you foresee a scenario where the school has made up its mind to fire Juwan at the end of this season, AND lets the long-time strength and conditioning coach (plus his top 50 recruit son) walk out the door?

GWmayhem, it's highly unlikely. I think the only ways this would happen is if Juwan's other violent encounter become public information or if Jace ends up causing an embarrassing problem that can't be contained.

Juwan is on a zero-tolerance policy with Michigan as a result of punching Joe Krabbenhoft's head two seasons ago.  Jon Sanderson, the strength and conditioning coach who was a John Beilein hire 15 years ago, overheard an altercation back in December between one of his trainers and Juwan's son Jace who had yet to be cleared to play due to a stress fracture.  Sanderson jumped in and told Juwan's son that he was being disrespectful and entitled.  That set off Juwan who was ready to fight Sanderson, according to Sanderson.  The coach was restrained and cleared of any wrongdoing a week later.  Sanderson left the basketball program but stayed on working with other Michigan athletes until this past Friday when he resigned from the school.

Sanderson has a sophomore in high school who is considered a top 50 recruit nationally in his class.  Michigan has already extended an offer to him.  In a world where anything can happen, am pretty sure that he won't be going to a school where his father just lost a power-struggle to Juwan Howard.  So sure, Michigan could part ways with Juwan after this season, after having already lost out on a prized recruit because of him, but I don't think so.

The truth will likely never completely come out, but Ward Manuel is quite aware of the facts and would very much like to take action. Juwan could easily be fired for cause.  This is not his only violent issue since the Krabbenhoff incident.  There's a group of influential donors who apparently control the situation at the moment (NIL).  Ward is sick and tired of the culture problems brought on by Juwan and is comfortable losing both father and son, but he'd be dismissed from his position as AD.  So, the lawyers got involved and cut the deal.  Sanderson gets paid and agrees not to talk (NDA).  Michigan continues down the path of rolling the dice with Juwan, hoping he can keep his cool long enough to have Jace play there for a few seasons.  Seems ridi

The likely scenario is that if you are in your 30's or younger, you don't have much idea as to the enormous impact that Sports Illustrated had on sports journalism, and really on journalism in general.  If you are in your 40's, you may have some idea and if you're in your 50's or are older, you fully get it.  Like you got the magazine in the mail, most every Thursday, and woe be unto the letter carrier for being a day late or God forbid, missing an occasional issue altogether.  The magazine's reputation was crafted upon its exceptional photography but soon, the country's most talented sportswriters lined up to write for the publication.  Frank Deford.  Rick Reilly (the younger, very entertaining version).  Curry Kirkpatrick.  Peter King.  Steve Rushin.  Richard Deitsch (if you like the sports media stuff which I do), Dan Jenkins, Peter Gammons, Dr. Z, Alexander Wolff, Jack McCallum, Rick Telander, the occasional first-person piece by George Plimpton, and the "give yourself 30 minutes to read" essay from arguably the best of all of them, Gary Smith.

The bad news surrounding SI came well before Friday's announcement that the publication is on life support.  Frankly, it has felt this way for years.  Ownership changed hands and as happens way too often in business, maximizing profits became far more important than putting out a superior product.  Proofreaders and editors were let go.  Writers got their resumes together.  Reader habits turned to digital where SI was agonizingly slow to adapt.  The magazine changed it's schedule to every other week,  followed by some indecipherable schedule where you might get the magazine once or twice per month contingent upon the month, and then finally, to a monthly schedule.

As a weekly publication, SI was never about providing a summary of the game; that's what newspapers were for.  But SI could walk you through what led up to a big game to the reactions given after the game was played.  That wa

Barry, I've not posted in a long time, but I visit your board frequently.  I agree with most of what you've written.  I only wonder if the lack of press hurts us.  These days, it seems as if the press (not just the Post or Hatchet, but maybe, ESPN, Athletic and other outlets including social media) set the tone and create a buzz and demand, including feeling of FOMO.  GW seems to hardly get any press.  I don't know if GW is an a position ot influence, but I suspect there's a way....

Great to read this LFO.  Welcome back!!!

Only in America does one of the country's foremost anti-vaccers joins a team owned by the co-founder of one ot he country's three top Covid vaccines.  Am fairly certain that this was all Woody; he was getting this done no matter what.  Andrew Brandt (who used to work for GB) pointed out that the Jets caved because they have a single owner who grew impatient while GB is publicly owned without a single owner (to grow impatient).  Interesting interpretation.

Gwmayhem, I hope it's good to be back.  Time will tell.

You are mostly right about WJ but Joe Douglas and a few of his people also pushed for this deal.  JD has been a big Rodgers fan going back to his days with the Bears and Eagles and isn't at all put-off by the things that concern some of us.  Woody wants to fix things and doesn't see any other way to do it in the near-term. Let's hope they're all right, otherwise, it'll likely end up being a giant step backwards.

Regarding GW basketball, it's nice to see a serious coach taking control of things.  Thanks always for your write-ups and also to others, including GWRising, who contribute so much here.  I've been reading the site for
