last year's prices were 10 tix for $199 or 20 tix for $299 plus a $50 donation to guarantee lower level non-wing seats
a Max of $25/game/ticket if you like the other Big East teams

TBH that's a great deal too, you can spend that much $ with ease at a Nats game with a few drinks parking and food and good seats

12/22 vs UVA-Wise a non-D1 program
i guess that is a Christmas present win
1 game left to fill out the schedule

We lost James IV, we lost Garrett Johnson to a season ending full season injury, beating on some lesser foes is a good idea because we are going to get pounded at times this year too, but we have talent to surprise some better teams too
A few good tests, a few teams that are WAY below us, we're a program in rebuild, anyone who thinks this year is going to be massive leap better be ready for the reality of the roster, talented but almost all brand new or year 2 to the program and a work in progress.

This trend of scheduling D-II games during the season is disturbing. Of the 350 plus D-1 schools, there must be one of them willing to play us. I don't want to be watching us playing D-II.

I don't disagree, although I don't think you'll find anyone who will ever jump up and down when it comes to playing a non-D1 in December. The schedule should be lighter around exams but I don't want the team to peak in November again and go a full month before conference play where the defense isn't tested again. Unfortunately, this is what CBB scheduling is in 2024, and I hope we can use the UVA-Wise game to test some things out before conference play since it won't hurt our KenPom standing.

The reality is that there is no such thing as a "rebuild" anymore in this current climate. This isn't the NEC. A coach should have more leeway in year 1, but expectations start to grow every year after that. I think CC has done a great job targeting guys who are more likely to stay at GW (and are great representatives of the university) but it feels like wishful thinking to expect anyone to stay more than two years nowadays. I'd love to be wrong. Someone like JBIV sticking it out for four years is rare.
Taking a "massive leap" depends on how you define it. I agree that the roster still skews a bit young, and there's enough question marks that I'm not expecting a massive leap in the A10. Having said that, I am looking to see a sizable jump nationally. Torvik has us in the 130s without Garrett, and I think that's fair. Health always plays a role, but there's no reason GW shouldn't be top 150 every year. CC had us well on track to get there last year, however inexperience + injuries hurt that. I think he'll get there this year, although a new AD probably doesn't make things easier for him moving forward.

I hear ya LSF. I don’t like it either. There are a bunch of factors as to why this is happening.
Simply put, the pool of available games are shrinking. There may very well be no D1 team available on that date, or if there is, we either don’t want to pay their asking price or don’t want to commit to a Home and Home. The available D1 may also have just gotten done playing their entire OOC on the road and may want a break as opposed to playing another road game in late December in DC.
High Majors are playing each other or buying home games against low level teams. HMs are not going on the road to play mid to low tier A10 teams anymore.
Low Majors are basically using the non-con to fund their program. If they can, they will sell themselves to the highest bidder. Some schools are getting $70-80k per game.
A10 teams all still want to play a majority of OOC games at home too like they’ve always done for their fans. Outside of Dayton/SLU/VCU, most A10 teams don’t have the budget to buy a one off game against a quality MM program. So instead we buy whatever D1 home games we can find and then fill in the gaps with a D2. Again, A10 schools try hard to not get stuck playing home and homes.
I think I saw that even a school like Illinois State is only playing one true road game. That’s absurd. The entirety of D1 (outside of the cupcakes who need money) have become cowards about ever playing on the road. I remember when the 05-06 team played Marshall on the road. There is a 0.0% chance that game gets scheduled today.

This coming football season, Army is joining Navy in the AAC. However, their annual game will take place after the conference championship game, thereby retaining its historical date on the calendar. It will be considered a nonconference game.
So here's a thought...of the 12 A10 schools who GW will only play one time during the season, why not schedule a second meeting and consider it a nonconference game in the standings? This would need to be coordinated through the league office to avoid playing the same school three times (before the A10 tournament) in the same season. You could schedule home-and-homes so that if Duquesne were this opponent one year in Pittsburgh, we would run it back the next year in DC. This would certainly upgrade the schedule when compared to playing a D2 opponent or say scheduling Appalachian State twice in the same season.
If teams won't play you at all, or on the road, or for less than a home and home, or won't grant a home and home, or the A10 does not engage in a conference vs. conference battle, why not play teams you know, at roughly your level, who may be in similar situations?

the $$$ is offset by the revenue generated by the Home Games, and the road team has all the costs of travel and lodging and food its just plain and simple "It Is What it is"

I get that scheduling is much harder in this environment and given where the program is, but at least last year I don't think we saw lots of other A10 teams scheduling D2 games. I hate it. It's not like GW has to play on that specific date, if as you say perhaps no D1 teams were available, for whatever reason. If home and homes will get better competition to prep for A10 season, I'm not sure why GW wouldn't be game for it. This is very frustrating.

Exactly. If they're paying $80,000 for VMI (VMI!), we can find a D1 team to play.
Even a decent one.
Or have the courage to play home and return away games with a decent D1 program that has
the guts to play such games. Believe there are still teams who do this. Or at least look harder.
We're already playing the well-known Mercyhurst, in literally its first D1 game ever.
So maybe some variables force a schedule like this one year. Ok. Question the effort, yet
maybe things happen.
But it's been numerous years like this.
And it does nothing for us or rebuilding the self-destroyed program, except build up false hopes early in the season. Shattered by reality in league play.

This is a really good point. There's been some chatter about moving to a 20-game league schedule like the big boys have done. The reason for not doing that in the past is it takes away 2 games teams could otherwise schedule against strong OOC opponents. But if those games are getting harder to buy, maybe it makes sense to just play each other more often.
For reference, here are the other A-10 schools playing non-D1s. The others may very well be doing it as well, but it hasn't been announced.
Dayton
Duquesne
Fordham
George Mason
George Washington
La Salle
Loyola Chicago
Rhode Island
St. Louis is playing 2!
St. Bonaventure
VCU

Only makes sense to do that if at-large hopefuls are picking up extra games against other A10 teams likely to finish in Q1 or Q2. Making Dayton play GW even once a year is a risk to already small hopes of multi-bid revenue shares.

I appreciate all the points being made about the scheduling process but can't understand this: There are 40 D1 basketball programs within a 4 hour bus/train ride from/to GW. The cost of 1-2 buses for a round trip to Penn or Lafayette can certainly be eked out. Heck, Mercyhurst is on Lake Erie and they can make the trip.
There used to be an obvious connection between coaches relationships with other coaches and programs in scheduling. JC had his, ML his, Jarvis his and on and on. It also was a carryover from recruiting connections.
I think the schedule will fall into place once CC establishes our product. If we make noise in the A10, which I think we will, the OOC will improve. Meanwhile show us a team that can run it's stuff consistently. Who cares if it's against a high school team as long as we don't throw the damn ball away every time we get momentum.
Let's go Revs!!!!

There appear to be 40 guys who were all "1971" somehow on a site with like 6-12 quasi regular posters so here's an idea, take those 53 year old degrees from GW and donate some funds to the program
Using 10 handles constantly whining crying moaning doesn't help GW win basketball games

So GW0509, I'll interpret this to mean you are being tested by The Dude. Where do you come down on repetitive posts which add nothing to his argument? Or accusing people of doing the very same thing he continues to do (masquerade under other poster names)? Or, taking a perfectly fine thread and attempting to ruin it by calling other posters here a bunch of whiners, again and again? Or, asking people to donate money repeatedly (as if we needed to be told)?
Grounds for banishment? Severe warning? Or, nothing more than just put up with the annoying troll that he is?

there is a trade off between fans seeing interesting, quality basketball vs what is good for the team in terms of the NET Rankings.
a non D-1 opponent has no bearing on NET - positively or negatively.
but winning by less than running up the score on 300+ and above ranked team will cost you NET points and reduce your chances on post season selection and invites into the better MTEs and Holiday Tournaments.
( i was at the Georgetown game that they lost to a D-2 team from Kentucky at McDonough - PreCovid)
I understand the scheduling strategy and dont like it - and i wish the teams would work on effort to change the NET calculus to remove this undesired effect
