Opponent Summary: Local rival American University (AU) hosts the GW Revs at Bender Arena on Monday evening. The Eagles, who were picked to finish last in the Patriot league this season, have yet to win a game this year. In their most recent outing, they were soundly beaten by Towson 89-62. The only returning starter from last year’s squad is graduate student Ivy Bales, who averages just 4.8 ppg and 4.6 rpg, but was a Patriot League All Defensive Team selection last year. AU’s best players this season have been freshmen. Forward Celia Kay, who comes in with 11.3 ppg and 7.6 rpg credentials leads the way, followed by guard Molly Driscoll, who scores at an 8.9 ppg clip. As a team, the Eagles put up 57.6 points per game on 35.1% shooting from the field (25.4% from beyond the arc), while allowing 72.6 ppg to their opponents. AU’s assist-to-turnover ratio is .7.
About the game: Like GW, AU is working to integrate their talented young newcomers with an assembly of more experienced players that have not played a lot of minutes together in the past. Also, like GW, they are work in progress and have yet to hit their stride. But despite AU’s 0-8 record, this is a dangerous game for the Revs because the Eagles have nothing to lose and beating GW in front of their home court fans would make their season. AU is a tough team to scout because their most efficient players (Kay and Driscoll) don’t dominate the ball, while other starters Anna Rescifina and Laura Nogues take most of the shots. Driscoll is their best 3-point shooter at 41.7%, but she’s taken just 3 attempts per game. This game is an opportunity for GW to get the front court more involved offensively. The team needs the Mott/Planes Fortunty/Diala trio to be more consistent scorers and to relieve some of the pressure on the younger squad members. Although Reynolds, Lewis and Sims improved from their performances in the GMU outing, it will be important them to remain focused and not take too much upon themselves, especially when the game is close. Defensively, the Revs should be able to contain the Eagles’ inside game, but have to be mindful of the perimeter and prevent any of their outside shooters from getting hot.
After an OT loss to Coppin State, GW is looking desperately for a win. The Revs have had some good offensive spurts, but have yet to show that they can play together when they get a lead. This has been exacerbated by the befuddling substitution patterns that at times has allowed the opposition to make big offensive runs to retake or extend their leads. Sierra-Vargas was successful because she played within her limitations, didn’t over dribble, and passed the ball quickly before it could be taken away from her. Hopefully, her performance rubs off on her teammates. As for the rotation, one would expect the starters who opened the Coppin State game to do so again, but nothing is certain. After that, it’s anyone’s guess how the substitutions play out. The Revs need to make a statement in this game, if for nothing else, to build up their confidence.
The team (coaching staff included) has to step up. At this point of the season there’s a fine line between guarded optimism for the future of the program or whether the program is circling the drain. This contest could have a lot to say about which direction GW is headed.

Final Result: GW takes down AU on the road 62-47.
A new GW starting 5: Sierra-Vargas, Lewis, Sims, Planes Fortuny and Engel. As you might expect with this starting 5, there was a rocky start. Both teams struggled out of the gate, but some inside baskets staked GW to a 6-3 lead going in to the media timeout. After the timeout, the offensive struggles continued for both teams but a pair of treys in the final minute by GW gave them a 16-8 lead going into the 2nd quarter. Good offensive board work helped GW increase the lead to 22-10 and force an early Eagles’ timeout at 6:03. GW’s offensive flow improved to close out the quarter, while AU continued to struggle. GW took 34-19 lead into the half. GW had great scoring balance, led by Matthews with 7 points, Loving and Andrews with 6 points each, and then Engel with 5 points. AU was led by Ellie Pingree with 6 points. Notably, the Revs 4 turnovers in the half. The 3rd quarter started much like the 1st, with either team getting a lot going. GW managed to keep a 39-26 lead going into the official timeout at 4:43. A 10-5 GW run to close out the 3rd quarter gave the Revs a 49-31 lead going into the final period. Aided by a pair of 3-pointers, AU cut into the margin, but GW answered to keep the lead at 56-39 with 4:24 to go. GW slowed the pace and a couple of late 3-pointers by AU helped reduce the margin to the final 62-47 score. Andrews led the Revs with 16 points, followed by Matthew’s 10 points. Sierra-Vargas had a good all-around game and finished with 8 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 0 turnovers. AU was led by Rescifina and Nogues who each had 10 points.
It was hard to draw any conclusions from this game because of the level of competition, but some things stood out. The good: GW had only 8 turnovers for the game. The bench provided 34 points, and GW won the battle inside with a 38-16 edge in points-in-the-paint. The Revs shot a respectable 40.3% for the game. Defensively, GW held AU to 27.1% shooting for the game, and held the Eagles’ leading scorers, Kay and Driscoll, to 7 points on a combined 1-13 shooting. The bad: GW was only 3-20 from beyond the arc, and despite the poor display of shooting, continued to take the some questionable 3’s with time on the shot clock. GW only had 8 assists, forcing players to take some tough shots. GW also missed 11 of 20 free throws. The team has to get better in these areas.
Some big questions remain. Where were Reynolds, Diala, and Calisto tonight and will they be available this weekend? They did not appear to be on the bench (although I can’t say for certain they weren’t). Will Sierra-Vargas continue to get big minutes going forward? In my mind she deserves some minutes until her performance dictates otherwise. The biggest question still, is whether the team is getting better. Hopefully more are data points are provided in the FIU Christmas Classic in Miami, FL. this weekend.
Next up is Miami of Ohio, in the FIU Christmas Classic, and another important test for GW.

American was inexperienced and not very strong inside and it showed. Still, it was a win and a decent effort overall. Just 8 turnovers should definitely be celebrated. Also, the team crossed the 60 point mark (that is an accomplishment under McCombs). At times, good shots were taken. I was impressed with Matthews again and Loving gave good minutes.
Unfortunately the team only had 8 assists, which reflects the problems I have with the McCombs offense. The players on the court have to put in so much effort to get a good quality shot. There's never any cutting, and rarely do players move off ball. Andrews is automatic from the midrange. How about setting a screen to free her up? Or run a play to get Planes Fortuny going down low/maybe a pick and pop behind the arc? There is talent here, but it could be maximized better. As bad as American was, they ran some nice plays. The give-and-go burned GW a few times but thankfully they are not very good so they missed on some chances.
At the end of the day, the biggest problem is this team just cannot shoot. WBB entered the game bottom 40 nationally in 3P%, and may be bottom 20 by the end of the night. FT shooting was also bad. This may be the worst shooting GW squad in a very long time. Engel is a good shooter in concept, but is just 5/28 on the year. Sims and Lewis also under 30%. I like the energy Sierra-Vargas has been bringing, but the fact that she is starting says a lot about the team right now. She has done a lot well, but please don't have her shoot threes.

Reynolds was not at Bender, apparently out sick. Calisto was on the bench in sweats wearing a boot on one foot. Diala was there but never took her warmup off. On the good news front, Parnell was not wearing the brace she has been sporting all season.
